Roundtable: Forged in Battle – The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers & White Officers
February 4, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Speaker Joseph Glatthaar will discuss “Forged in Battle: The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and White Officers”.
Just sixteen months after the Civil War began, the Federal government started to recruit black soldiers. This provided a unique opportunity for the 180,000 free blacks and former slaves to join the fight as United States Colored Troops. At wars’ end, 37,000 USCT would fill the ranks in their fight for freedom.
Dr. Joseph T. Glatthaar is the current Stephenson Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina and the Adjunct Professor of the Curriculum in Peace, War and Defense. Glatthaar specializes in the American Civil War and American military history on the under graduate and graduate levels. He is the author of seven books to include Forged in Battle: The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and White Officers.
