2024 Capital Campaign
Dear Friends,
It’s been a challenging year for Pamplin Historical Park that began with an over 50% loss in funding from the R. B. Pamplin Foundation, which continues to decrease. This had an immediate impact resulting in the closure of the park to walk-in visitation, a reduction in operations, programming and staffing.
Having decided on these regrettable actions, I then set about seeking solutions to restore, not only the lost funding, but position the park for operations into the future. An appeal for support was mailed out in February and many of you, our park members and other donors, answered the call by offering monetary donations, renewing memberships early and some purchased new memberships altogether. This generosity provided the funds allowing us to reopen to walk-ins three days a week in June, continue our educational instruction and most special event programming. Your contributions have additionally been vital, in allowing me time to pursue options, identify opportunities and develop a strategic plan.
A strategic plan has now been developed and accepted for implementation. Three primary goals comprise the strategic plan:
conservation of the Breakthrough Battlefield
continuation of the educational mission
establishment of an investment fund to support park operations in perpetuity
Execution of this plan is already underway with the conservation effort at the Banks House, which has provided grant supported funds through an American Battlefields Trust program. It includes placing a protective conservation easement on this Breakthrough Battlefield property and protecting it from any future development. While these funds are a welcome infusion, together with our revenues generated by park operations, they can only last but so long as park expenses outweigh the revenues that can be generated.
We will not realize additional funding through the plan’s execution until the middle of 2025. Pamplin Historical Park still needs to provide the highest level of quality: in our K-12 educational programs, active-duty military staff rides, special events and maintain operations until then.
Your support is crucial in allowing us to fulfill the mission of education, conservation, and the continuation of operations until reaching that first important phase of the strategic plan in the summer of 2025. Our 2024 Capital Campaign Pressing Forward goal is $100,000 which will enable us to continue telling the stories of those common soldiers, the enslaved and others that were forever impacted by the Civil War.
Thank you in advance for your contribution in Pressing Forward with us .Your contribution today will help us to achieve our mission together and position a conserved Breakthrough Battlefield and Pamplin Historical Park, to operate in perpetuity.
