SUMMARY:Symposium Special Tour: 1864 Wilson-Kautz Raid
DESCRIPTION:This special guided tour will visit sites from the Wilson-Kautz Raid with Director of Education & Interpretation\, Zachary Pittard. Park members pay $129 per person and non-members pay $139 per person. The tour begins and ends at the Park’s National Museum of the Civil War Soldier parking lot. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Call (804) 861-2408 for reservations today. \nThe Wilson–Kautz Raid was led by Union cavalry under Brigadier Generals James H. Wilson and August Kautz\, whose objective was to cut railroads between Lynchburg\, Virginia\, and the essential Confederate rail supply center at Petersburg\, Virginia. While the raid disrupted Confederate rail communications temporarily\, the raiding force suffered high casualties and loss of artillery\, their supply train and many raiders were captured\, making this a partial Union failure. \nThe tour will leave from the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Historical Park promptly at 8:00 a.m. and return by 5:00 p.m. Stops will include the Schwartz Tavern\, GroveBattlefield\, Staunton River Bridge\, Sappony Church\, Reams Station and others along the way. A box lunch will be provided (included in your registration fee). Reservations are required and spaceis limited. Registration is on a first-come\, first-served basis.
