SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join this month’s guest speaker Jerry “Dez” Desmond\, Executive Director of Pamplin Historical Park as he talks about “Maine Troops at Gettysburg”. \nDesmond’s career includes 22 years of professional museum experience in the areas of education\, curation\, and administration. He has written numerous historical articles and multiple books including “Turning the Tide at Gettysburg: How Maine Saved the Union.”Since his time at La Paglia and Associates\, he has served as a consultant leading the development and expansion of new and existing museums. Desmond was involved with over 20 mostly Civil War-related museum projects across the Southeast while serving with La Paglia and Associates. \nDesmond has received the Tennessee Association of Museums Award of Excellence for four consecutive years 1996-1999. More recently\, he has served as the Director of the Rome History Museum in Georgia and the Birmingham History Center in Alabama. His master degrees in both education and history were completed at the University of Maine. Jerry’s early career includes 12 years of secondary school education and college-level teaching experience. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Round table (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month (except June\, July\, and August) at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. Annual membership is $40.00. Individuals who are already members of Pamplin Historical Park can become members of PCWRT for $20.00. Non-members can attend for $5.00 each meeting. SUMMARY:25th Anniversary Photo Contest
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park and The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is launching a “25th Anniversary Photo Contest” to celebrate 25 years of education and preservation. The contest is open to all U.S. residents 18 years of age and above.  This contest provides an opportunity for entrants to capture the natural beauty of the 424-acre park and its historic structures and battlefield. \nOne of the most well know photographers in history\, Mathew Brady once said\, “My greatest aim has been to advance the art of photography and to make it what I think I have\, a great and truthful medium of history.” Now park visitors of all ages have this unique opportunity to capture their own moment in time and enter to win one of two $100 cash prizes. \nThe contest will accept photo submissions from March 10 through May 10\, 2019.  All photographs must have been taken at Pamplin Historical Park during the contest period.  Photographs taken prior to March 10\, 2019 are not eligible to be entered. All photographs taken at Pamplin Historical Park are limited to exterior locations. \nDigital photographs only will be accepted.  Photos can be uploaded electronically (along with a completed entry form) and submitted via email to generalmailbox@pamplinpark.org. Entrants may submit photos in one of two categories: Professional or Non-professional. For the purposes of this contest\, a professional is deemed to mean anyone who receives income from their photography and/or services. Participants may submit up to two (2) photographs in one of two categories: Professional or Non-professional. An entry form is required for each photograph. \nA panel of judges will select the winners. Winning photographs will be based on overall composition and technical skill.  A $100 cash prize will be awarded in both the Professional and Non-professional categories. Additional prizes in each category include Second Prize of a $50 Gift Certificate for use in Pamplin Historical Park’s Civil War Store\, and Third Prize of a $25 Gift Certificate for use in Pamplin Historical Park’s Civil War Store. An Honorable Mention prize of a $10 Gift Certificate for use in Pamplin Historical Park’s Civil War Store may also be awarded in the same two categories at the judges’ discretion.  Entrants may only win one prize. SUMMARY:Breakthrough Luncheon with Peter Carmichael
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Peter S. Carmichael will speak at a special luncheon during the Park’s Breakthrough Battle Anniversary Weekend on March 30th at noon. Carmichael will discuss his latest book and share some of his research on the Petersburg Campaign.  Attendees will have an opportunity to read and raise questions about some of the sources he utilized for his new book The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought\, Fought\, and Survived in Civil War Armies. \nReservations for this author luncheon are required and can be made by calling (804) 861-2408. A registration fee of $45.00 includes the luncheon lecture\, boxed lunch and a copy of Carmichael’s new book The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought\, Fought\, and Survived in Civil War Armies. An assortment of box lunch selection options include; The Italian Sandwich\, Turkey Sandwich\, Ham and Swiss Sandwich\, Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich or a Caesar Salad. Luncheon attendees are invited to explore the Park afterwards\, with their included regular daily Park admission. \nDr. Peter S. Carmichael is the Fluhrer Professor of History and the Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. He completed his doctorate at Penn State University and then went on to teach at Western Carolina University\, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and West Virginia University. Carmichael is the author of seven books including The Last Generation: Young Virginians in Peace\, War\, and Reunion\, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2005.
