SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier has established a new Civil War Roundtable and it’s meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Park’s Education Center. \nThis month Dr. Brian McKnight will speak at the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable on “Champ Ferguson’s Guerrilla War”. \nDr. McKnight is currently a professor of history and the Founding Director\, Center for Appalachian Studies at the University of Virginia at Wise. He has authored three books and co-authored a fourth titled The Age of Andrew Jackson. McKnight has been recognized for his efforts to preserve regional and local history with awards ranging from the 2006 James I. Robertson Literary Prize for Confederate History for Contested Borderland to being the recipient of the 2011 Tennessee History Book Award for Confederate Outlaw. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable\, founded in 2018\, is dedicated to the study\, preservation\, and discussion of the people and events that were part of the War Between the States (1861-1865).  \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month (except June\, July\, and August) at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. Annual membership is $40.00. Individuals who are already members of Pamplin Historical Park can become members of PCWRT for $20.00. Non-members can attend for $5.00 each meeting. SUMMARY:22nd Annual Civil War Symposium: First Ladies of Civil War History
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 22nd Annual Civil War Symposium: First Ladies of the Civil War on October 19-21\, 2018. This year’s symposium features a first ever all-female award-winning speaker panel of leading Civil War historians from across the country. \nSymposium topics vary from “Sherman’s March to the Sea” to “The Colors of Courage: Gettysburg’s Forgotten History Immigrants\, Women\, and African Americans in the Civil War’s Defining Battle”. The speakers are; Dr. Anne Sarah Rubin of University of Maryland\, Dr. Jennifer Murray of University of Virginia at Wise\, Dr. Lesley J. Gordon of University of Alabama\, Dr. Margaret Creighton of Bates College\, Maine\, Dr. Catherine Clinton of University of Texas at San Antonio\, Dr. Barbara Gannon of University of Central Florida and Diane Monroe Smith. All of these esteemed speakers have been recognized in the field of Civil War history with awards ranging from the Lincoln Prize to the Wiley-Silver Prize for Civil War publications. \nThe Symposium begins on Friday night with a reception at the Park where attendees and speakers can meet and enjoy refreshments. Saturday is filled with lectures and opportunities to purchase published works by the speakers for autographs and participation in a silent auction. Sunday will feature additional speakers and a panel discussion to include Dr. Francoise Bonnell\, Director of the U.S. Army Women’s Museum at Fort Lee\, VA. \nSymposium pricing is $339.00 per attendee\, which includes all lectures\, the Friday night reception\, two mid-morning coffee breaks\, two lunches\, and a Saturday night banquet. SUMMARY:In Memory of Self and Comrades: Book Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:Join author Michael K. Shaffer as he discusses his new book In memory of Self and Comrades which is a story about Thomas W. Colley\, 1st Virginia Cavalry. This event is included with regular admission.\n\nThomas W. Colley served in one of the most active and famous units in the Civil War\, the 1st Virginia Cavalry\, which fought in battles in the Eastern Theater\, from First Manassas/Bull Run to the defense of Petersburg. Colley was born November 11\, 1837\, outside Abingdon\, Virginia\, and grew up knowing the daily demands of life on a farm. In May 1861\, along with the other members of the Washington Mounted Rifles\, he left his home in Washington County and reported to camp in Richmond. During the war\, Colley received wounds on three different occasions: first at Waterloo Bridge in 1862\, again at Kelly’s Ford in 1863\, and finally at Haw’s Shop in 1864. The engagement at Haw’s Shop resulted in the amputation of his left foot\, thereby ending his wartime service.\n\n\n\nThe first modern scholarly edition of Colley’s writings\, In Memory of Self and Comrades dramatizes Colley’s fate as a wounded soldier mustered out before the war’s conclusion. Colley’s postwar reflections on the war reveal his struggle to earn a living and maintain his integrity while remaining somewhat unreconciled to his condition. He found much of his solace through writing and sought to advance his education after the war. As one of an estimated 20\,000 soldiers who underwent amputation during the Civil War\, his memoirs reveal the challenges of living with what many might recognize today as post-traumatic stress disorder. Annotations from editor Michael K. Shaffer provide further context to Colley’s colorful and insightful writings on both his own condition and the condition of other veterans also dealing with amputations. \nMichael K. Shaffer is an instructor at Kennesaw State University’s College of Continuing and Professional Education. He is the author of Washington County\, Virginia\, in the Civil War.
