DESCRIPTION:Join Pamplin Historical Park’s Executive Director\, Colin Romanick\, and Newport News Historic Sites Curator\, J. Michael Moore as we examine General McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign\, covering the period between the landing of the Army of the Potomac on the Peninsula on March 17\, 1862 to the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5\, 1862. \nThe tour will leave from the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Historical\nPark promptly at 8:00 a.m. and return by 5:30 p.m. Stops will include the Warwick Courthouse\,\nLee’s Mill\, Dam No. 1\, Endview Plantation\, Lee Hall Mansion and others along the way. DESCRIPTION:Join author Scott Patchan who will present on October 5\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. to the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. Patchan will share the “‘Shenandoah Summer-The 1864 Valley Campaign.” \nScott C. Patchan is a graduate of James Madison University in the Shenandoah Valley. He is the author of many articles and books\, including The Forgotten Fury: The Battle of Piedmont (1996)\, Shenandoah Summer: The 1864 Valley Campaign (2007)\, Second Manassas: Longstreet’s Attack and the Struggle for Chinn Ridge (2011)\, The Battle of Piedmont and Hunter’s Raid on Staunton (2011)\, and The Last Battle of Winchester: Phil Sheridan\, Jubal Early and the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign (2013). He has also written feature essays for Blue and Gray Magazine on Cool Spring\, Rutherford’s Farm and Second Kernstown; Third Battle of Winchester\, Fisher’s Hill\, Cedar Creek and two volumes on Second Bull Run. He has also written extensively for Civil War Magazine\, North South\, America’s Civil War and other historical publications. Scott has twice served as President of Bull Run Civil War Round Table\, a member of the Kernstown Battlefield Association’s board of directors from 2000-2014\, and worked extensively on the interpretation of the Third Winchester battlefield for the Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Foundation. He is also a much sought tour guide at both Civil War and Revolutionary War era sites from New York to Georgia. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month (except for the months of June\, July and August) at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Victims for the Grave
DESCRIPTION:Join Mr. Robert Garnett who will present on September 7\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. to the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. Mr. Garnett will share the “‘Victims for the Grave’: Elmira Prison Camp and the Confederate Dead of Woodlawn National Cemetery.” \n‘Victims for the Grave’: Elmira Prison Camp and the Confederate Dead of Woodlawn National Cemetery” explores the life\, death\, and legacy of the speaker’s fourth great-grandfather\, Corporal Robert Henry Gwynn of the 26th Virginia Infantry. When the Civil War erupted\, Gwynn was one of roughly a thousand Gloucester men who rushed to Virginia’s defense. In June 1864\, he was captured during the action around Petersburg. After a stint at Point Lookout\, Gwynn was transferred to the deadliest Union-operated prisoner of war camp—Elmira. Nicknamed “Hellmira” for its miserable conditions\, one-quarter of the camp’s detainees\, Gwynn included\, perished from exposure\, malnutrition\, and disease. Today\, one can find Gwynn’s name engraved on Gloucester Courthouse’s Confederate Memorial. \nRob Garnett is a native of Gloucester\, Virginia. He holds a master’s degree in English literature. In addition to working as a guide and historical interpreter in the museum field\, Garnett has taught at the college-level for over a decade. A Walt Whitman-themed teaching assignment transformed Garnett’s lifelong fascination with the Civil War into an academic pursuit. SUMMARY:World War II in the Pacific Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting in the Pacific Theater and the home front during World War II. Guests will have the opportunity to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater and about a number of different aspects of a soldier’s life to include weapons\, signals and communications. Impressions will range from U.S. Army and Marines to those of British and Russian allies. Civilian living historians will portray goings on at the home front and USO activities stateside. Demonstrations will include weapons and a 1940’s military uniform and civilian fashion show. \nPartner museums to include; the Hampton Roads Naval Museum\, MacArthur Memorial\, U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum\, U.S. Army Ordnance TSF\, U.S. Army Women’s Museum and the Virginia War Memorial will have displays and more for visitors to see and experience. Presentations by authors and historians will be made on the following subjects; Battle of Midway by Timothy & Laura Orr which includes a book-signing\, Japanese Armor by Eury Cantillo\, Pre-war American-Japanese Relations presentation by James Triesler and The Price of Unpreparedness: American POWs in the Pacific by Corey Thorton. \nLaura Orr is the Director of Education and Military Outreach at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk\, Virginia. Her husband Dr. Timothy Orr is an Associate Professor of History at Old Dominion University. Both co-authored Never Call Me a Hero: A Legendary American Dive-Bomber Pilot Remembers of the Battle of Midway published in 2017 by Harper Collins. The memoir chronicles American dive-bomber pilot Jack “Dusty” Kleiss. Dusty worked on this book for years with naval historians Timothy and Laura Orr\, aiming to publish Never Call Me a Hero for Midway’s seventy-fifth anniversary in June 2017. Sadly\, as the book neared completion in 2016\, Dusty Kleiss passed away at age 100\, one of the last surviving dive-bomber pilots to have fought at Midway. And yet the publication of Never Call Me a Hero is a cause for celebration: these pages are Dusty’s remarkable legacy\, providing a riveting eyewitness account of the Battle of Midway\, and an inspiring testimony to the brave men who fought\, died\, and shaped history during those four extraordinary days in June\, seventy-five years ago. \nEury Cantillo began a museum career shortly after college graduation\, first working as a historic interpreter at Plimoth Plantation\, later sailing a replica of one of Columbus’ ships through the Panama Canal\, and then working as the Outreach Coordinator at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester\, MA. At the height of the war in Iraq\, he decided to enlist in the US Army. Cantillo served as an Artillery Officer in the 3rd Infantry Division\, which included a 15 month deployment to the city of Ramadi in Western Iraq. In addition he lead a variety of supply convoys through the desert\, and finally ended the deployment as a Battery Fire Direction Officer involved in the field testing of the Excalibur GPS guided artillery round. He then used the GI Bill to earn a Master’s degree in education\, and began working for the National Park Service at the Lexington and Concord battlefield\, the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings\, and the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington\, DC. He then worked as the Director of Education for the Navy’s Submarine Force museum\, moved to CMH as the Curator at the Army’s Aviation museum before becoming the Curator of the Army’s Ordnance Training Support Facility\, the first operational TSF in the system. \nJames Triesler is the Director of Education for the Virginia War Memorial located in Richmond\, Virginia. Triesler became a history teacher in 1992\, and has a passion for WWII. He and his students have won numerous awards for their work\, including a Save Our History Award from the History Channel for creating the website ittookawar.com\, a collection of letters and personal accounts from the Second World War. While in the classroom\, Triesler accumulated nearly 8\,000 original WWII letters for his students to learn from and transcribe. He was named the Virginia Battle of the Bulge person of the year in 2012\, and is a former Virginia Region 1 Teacher of the Year. He has presented at several VBOB and BOBA events and loves displaying artifacts for people to enjoy and learn about WWII. Since 2015\, Triesler has been the Director of Education at the Virginia War Memorial\, where he has continued to honor veterans and educate students of all ages. \nJames Corey Thornton has served as Curator for the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk\, Virginia since November 2014. A resident of Norfolk\, Virginia\, Corey has holds both a Bachelor of Arts\, and a Master of Arts in History from Old Dominion University (Norfolk\, VA). As the Memorial’s Curator he manages the artifact collection and plans and develops the Memorial’s special and permanent exhibits. Corey is also responsible for the collections management of over 17\,000 artifacts in the collection\, as well as assisting with organizational planning\, and supervising frontline staff. Prior to his work at the MacArthur Memorial\, Corey served as the Curator of History for the Portsmouth Museums (Portsmouth\, VA)\, from 2007 to 2014. In Portsmouth\, Corey curated exhibits highlighting aspects of Portsmouth’s history\, managed the artifact collection\, and assisted with overseeing the City’s historical markers\, monuments\, and large external artifacts. Corey spends his personal time with his family\, researches various aspects of American history\, and plays his drums (especially after a challenging day at work!). Viewings of the Virginia War Memorials’\, Virginians at War: Battle of Iwo Jima which combines original footage with first-hand accounts to tell stories from the battle will be shown over the weekend in the park’s Education Center. \nChildren will enjoy craft activities to include World War II coloring books and making a take home project of the Roosevelt’s Scottie Dog “Fala.” \nWorld War II\, which was fought between 1939 and 1945\, cost an estimated 85 million casualties both military and civilian worldwide. The United States military casualties amounted to 416\,800. While many were thankful for the surrender in Europe on May 8\, 1945 the war in the Pacific raged on and was far from over. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the first half of the year gave a glimpse of the carnage awaiting invasion forces set to strike the Japanese home islands. A planned Allied invasion on the island of Kyushu was set for November 1st. There 500\,000 Japanese troops were in position and another 6 million were under arms or able to be called into service. This invasion did not come to pass. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Imperial Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The terms were accepted on August 14\, 1945 and a formal document signing ceremony took place aboard the U.S.S. SUMMARY:Independence Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Independence Day as Pamplin Historical Park will offer multiple programs throughout the day. \nFamilies will enjoy the chance to meet founding father Benjamin Franklin portrayed by actor and historian Barry Stevens. Stevens has been presenting Benjamin Franklin since 2005. His education of Dr. Franklin has led him to read and study extensively on the life and times of this American personality. It has taken him to locations throughout the Colonies known to Dr. Franklin and even to Le Procope restaurant in Paris\, France. Visitors will be invited to engage Dr. Franklin in a conversation and experience interaction with living history. \nAdditional programming includes\, live music performed by the Harken Back String Band and the opportunity for families to participate in period games. Living historians portraying Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers will share why they fought and explain the equipment and life of the men during the War for Independence and the American Civil War. Visitors can also take part in a special ceremony with color guard\, pledge of allegiance and a cannon fire salute. \nAll visitors will have the opportunity to tour the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A mere seven days later\, the surrender at Appomattox helped to secure the Union and began healing a nation. \nAll events and activities included with Park admission. \nThis event is held in partnership with the Bank of Southside Virginia and Strosnider Chevrolet.

DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier will offer a full schedule of daily programs this Memorial Day. The Park will open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and activities are included with regular museum admission. \n\nThe recreated 124th New York Infantry will demonstrate the life of a Civil War soldier with camp life and drill throughout the day. An display of Medals of Honor can also be viewed throughout the day.\n\n\nA viewing of “We Are Americans: Air Force Academy Tribute to Memorial Day” will be shown at 10:00 am followed by a Breakthrough Battlefield tour at 11:00 am. A special ceremony will take place at 1:00 pm with remarks made by the executive director\, a color guard of soldiers from US Army Fort Gregg-Adams and the playing of TAPS.\n\n\n\nAfternoon programming includes a “Music that Moves the Military” presentation and demonstration followed by a presentation on Mortuary Affairs by US Army Sergeant 1st Class\, Richard Garcia a Mortuary Affairs Specialist at 3:00 pm. Mortuary Affairs is part of the US Army Quartermaster Corps whose duties include locating and identifying remains in the field\, ensuring safe transport of the deceased and their belongings\, and assisting with arrangements and military honors at their burial site.\n\n\n\nAll activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.\n\n\nThis event is held in partnership with the Bank of Southside Virginia and Strosnider Chevrolet.

DESCRIPTION:Join speaker J. Michael Moore as he shares the story of “The Peninsula Campaign.” \nJ. Michael Moore is employed by the City of Newport News and serves as curator for Lee Hall Mansion and Historic Endview. Moore received a bachelor of arts in history from Christopher Newport University and a master of arts in history\nfrom Old Dominion University. During his tenure with the City\, he has curated exhibits at several local historic sites\, developed historic signage\, and led battlefield tours in Maryland\, North Carolina\, Virginia\, and West Virginia. Working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources\, he has placed Causey’s Mill\, Endview Plantation\, Lee’s Mill\, and Whitaker’s Mill on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition\, Michael is a popular lecturer for CNU’s LifeLong Learning Society. Moore has co-authored two books – The\nPeninsula Campaign of 1862: A Military Analysis in 2005 and Yorktown’s Civil War Siege: Drums Along the Warwick in 2012. In addition\, he has served as the editor and photographic editor for twelve books and written articles for Virginia\nCavalcade\, North & South\, Military Collector & Historian\, and Mulberry Island\nNotes. In recognition of his work in public history\, the Governor of Kentucky\ncommissioned Moore a Kentucky Colonel in 2014. DESCRIPTION:Join speaker John Fox as he shares the story of “The Battle of Fort Gregg.” \nMr. Fox’s The Confederate Alamo is the first book-length study ever written about the chaotic and bloody Battle of Fort Gregg. By April 2\, 1865\, General Ulysses S. Grant’s men had tightened their noose around the vital town of Petersburg\, Virginia. Trapped on three sides with a river at their back\, the soldiers from General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia had never faced such dire circumstances. To give Lee time to craft an escape\, a small motley group of threadbare Southerners made a suicidal last stand at a place called Fort Gregg. Famous Civil War historian Douglas Southall Freeman described this fight as “one of the most dramatic incidents of an overwhelming day.” The venerable Union commander\, Major General John Gibbon\, observed\, “[t]he struggle was one of the most desperate ever witnessed.” \nJohn J. Fox grew up in Richmond\, Virginia. He graduated from Washington & Lee University with a BA in U.S. History in 1981 and then served on active duty in the U.S. Army for seven years as an armor officer and aviator. His 2004 book\, Red Clay to Richmond: Trail of the 35th Georgia Infantry Regiment\, received the “ 2005 James I. Robertson Jr. Literary Prize for Confederate History” and a 2006 research award from the Georgia Secretary of State. His 2010 book\, The Confederate Alamo: Bloodbath at Petersburg’ s Fort Gregg on April 2\, 1865\, received a 2011 IPPY Award for non-fiction. His articles have appeared in numerous Civil War magazines and newspapers. His newest book\, Stuart’ s Finest Hour: The Ride Around McClellan\, June 1862\, was just released in September 2013. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we remember the 158th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle which ended the Petersburg Campaign and forced the Confederate withdrawal from Richmond. \nThe Park is hosting a full weekend schedule of activities and programs for walk-in visitors. Attendees will have the opportunity to drill with the troops\, see artillery\, medical\, and musical demonstrations. Visitors can experience a battle reenactment each day\, on the actual Breakthrough Battlefield with reenactors and artillery providing all of the sights and sounds of battle. Additional programming focuses on civilians and the home front. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about food shortages and creative recipes during the Civil War. Event attendees will also uncover the impact of a military occupation on civilians and the resulting refugee crisis of those fleeing the fighting at their doorsteps. SUMMARY:Medal of Honor Day
DESCRIPTION:The celebration will begin with a documentary film\, which will explain the origins of the Medal of Honor\, and it’s inception during the American Civil War. Guest speaker Eury J. Cantillo is the Curator of Science and Technology at the U.S. Army Ordnance TSF at Fort Lee\, Virginia and at 1:00 p.m. he will offer visitors a presentation on the history and evolution of the actual Medal of Honor and the changes in recipient requirements over time. A special display of multiple Medals of Honor will show the changes in designs and the medals for each branch of service being the: U.S. Air Force\, U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy throughout the day. One of the medals displayed was awarded to U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Louis Cukela. Cukela is one of only 19 two-time Medal of Honor recipients who received both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy Medal of Honor for his actions in World War I during the Battle of Belleau Woods in France. \nAfterwards\, a special Breakthrough Battlefield tour will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Park’s Battlefield Center. There\, visitors will begin the tour by seeing artifacts from two Medal of Honor recipients\, Captain Charles Gould of the 5th Vermont Infantry and Sergeant John Ezra Buffington\, 6th Maryland Infantry. Buffington’s own Medal of Honor is among the artifacts to be viewed. Tour attendees will then tour the Breakthrough Battlefield with the Park’s Senior Interpretive Ranger\, Jim Partain who will share the stories of both men at the actual citation locations along with other Petersburg Campaign Medal of Honor recipients. \nThe Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest award for military valor in action. In over 150 years since it’s inception\, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to just 3\,535 and only 65 are living recipients today. The standards to award the Medal itself have changed since the Civil War and\, over time the design has also changed several times. Although some changes have taken place over the years\, the Medal has always embraced the values of bravery\, courage\, sacrifice and integrity. \nEury Cantillo began a museum career shortly after college graduation\, first working as a historic interpreter at Plimoth Plantation\, later sailing a replica of one of Columbus’ ships through the Panama Canal\, and then working as the Outreach Coordinator at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester\, MA. At the height of the war in Iraq\, he decided to enlist in the U.S. Army. Cantillo served as an Artillery Officer in the 3rd Infantry Division\, which included a 15 month deployment to the city of Ramadi in Western Iraq. In addition he lead a variety of supply convoys through the desert\, and finally ended the deployment as a Battery Fire Direction Officer involved in the field testing of the Excalibur GPS guided artillery round. He then used the GI Bill to earn a Master’s degree in education\, and began working for the National Park Service at the Lexington and Concord battlefield\, the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings\, and the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington\, DC. He then worked as the Director of Education for the U. S. Navy’s Submarine Force museum\, moved to U.S. Army Center of Military History as the Curator at the Army’s Aviation museum before becoming the Curator of the Army’s Ordnance Training Support Facility\, the first operational TSF in the system. \nThis special event is supported by the U.S. Army Museums and TSF at Fort Lee\, Virginia and the Virginia War Museum located in Newport News\, Virginia. Strosnider Chevrolet is a proud sponsor of the Medal of Honor Day celebration. \n

SUMMARY:Roundtable: An Artist Talk\, Painting the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Henry Kidd will discuss\, “An Artist Talk\, Painting the Civil War.” \nHenry Kidd is a nationally recognized historical artist. His fine art has appeared in documentaries on the History Channel and on covers of many books and magazines. He designed the Confederate Medal of Honor. His artwork hangs in many prestigious institutions and museums such as West Point\, Virginia Military Institute\, Mariner’s Museum\, Museum of the Confederacy\, Petersburg National Battlefield\, the Virginia Historical Society and others. \nKidd’s artwork has primarily focused on the American Civil War but\, includes other conflicts and topics as well. During the Gulf War\, he created a piece of artwork to honor and support America’s military. He made and sold limited edition prints of his work\, and gave one-hundred percent of the proceeds to the American Red Cross\, for the families of military personnel. In recognition of his generosity\, Elizabeth Dole\, then president of the American Red Cross\, presented him with an award. Kidd and his family were also personally thanked by General Schwarzkopf. \nIn 2005\, the Virginia General Assembly honored Henry Kidd with a joint House and Senate Resolution for his September 11\, 2001 artwork and his endeavors to honor all the loved ones lost\, and his work with the firefighters and police who answered the call to help others. After the tragic events of September 11\, 2001\, Kidd created a memorial piece of artwork entitled ‘America’s Heroes’ and raised thousands of dollars for relief efforts. He founded Adopt-A-Station\, a non-profit organization to honor victims of September 11th. He has also personally presented more than three hundred framed ‘America’s Heroes’ prints to Fire Houses and Police Precincts in New York\, Northern Virginia and Pennsylvania who responded to the tragedy. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Explosion at City Point
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Kenny Bage as he shares the “The Explosion at City Point.” \nCity Point was founded as a town in 1613 and incorporated as a town in 1826 and is located in the modern day City of Hopewell at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers. The site served as the location of Union general-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters during the Petersburg Campaign of the American Civil War. It also served as a critical Union port and supply hub for the Army of the Potomac by late 1864. City Point became one of the largest ports in the world at this time. \nOn August 9\, 1864\, Confederate agent John Maxwell smuggled an explosive device aboard an ammunition barge at City Point. Maxwell referred to the device as a “horological torpedo” which had a timer to detonate the bomb. An hour later\, the bomb exploded\, which spread to other barges and buildings around the wharf. The tremendous explosion resulted in 58 killed\, 126 wounded and about $4\,000\,000 in damage. The damage was such that Grant remarked\, “every part of the yard used as my headquarters is filled with splinters and shells.” \nMr. Kenny Bage is a local business owner\, retired police officer\, and a graduate of Saint Leo University. He is a member and leader in almost twenty historical\, hereditary\, and civic organizations to include: Sons of the American Revolution\, Colonial Heights Historical Society\, Sons of Confederate Veterans\, and the current president of the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. SUMMARY:Veterans Day Observance
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we honor America’s veterans this Veterans Day on November 11\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with activities and programs throughout the day. Visitors can learn about the advancements in weaponry between the Civil War and World War I at a special weapons demonstration at 11:00 a\,m.\n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon to include a presentation of colors\, cannon fire salute and speech. Families are then invited to join educator and musical soloist Deborah Soderholm. She has combined her two passions of singing and history to bring the music of the past alive. A history teacher and museum educator\, she has also performed on various stages throughout the region doing everything from musical theater and cabarets to opera. She has performed with PCC’s Gilbert and Sullivan operettas\, Opera in Williamsburg\, Williamsburg Players\, Peninsula Community Theater\, Fort Lee Theater Company\, Henricus Historical Park\, and the American Youth Ballet. Deborah has also been heard as a church soloist\, professional Christmas caroler for Merchant’s Square\, acting and singing in programs for Colonial Williamsburg Art Museums and doing the national anthem for sporting events and special ceremonies.   Everyone will enjoy songs of American patriotism and and those from World War I beginning at 1:30 p.m.\n\nAfterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a U.S. Army Depot Brigades in World War I lecture by author and historian Alexander Barnes at 2:45 p.m. Alexander F. Barnes served in the United States Marine Corps and Army National Guard\, retiring as a warrant officer. He is currently the Virginia National Guard Command historian and author of seven books to include the title\, United States Army Depot Brigades in World War I.\n\nPamplin Historical Park Executive Director\, Jerry Desmond will conduct a guided walking tour at 3:30 p.m. of the Breakthrough Battlefield\, which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The tour will offer attendees a chance to hear about the events which unfolded on that fateful morning while viewing some of the most well-preserved earthworks in the country. A notable story to be shared is that of Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. Gould would later receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle.\n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 424-acre park to include the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary exhibit titled “292 Days\, A City at War” can be toured and is open through December 17\, 2022. It presents the civilian side of the war as the City of Petersburg laid under siege for 292 days from June of 1864 to April of 1865. The exhibit is divided into two parts. The first part examines the history of Petersburg and its impressive growth from its founding around 1675 as a trading post known as Peter’s Point to the secession of Virginia from the United States in 1861. Then the war came\, the second part of the exhibit covers the war years from the secession vote to the end of the siege.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Shadows Murder Mystery: Who Killed Sergeant Korper?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this murder mystery as groups will join a Provost investigator as he questions suspects and follows leads to help you discover\, “Who Killed Sergeant Korper?” There’s one body\, two wounds and six suspects who all have a motive and means to have committed murder. The investigation takes place on the historic grounds of Pamplin Historical Park and the characters and settings are based on real historical persons and locations. \nIt is the evening of October 31\, 1864. Tudor Hall\, the plantation of the Boisseau family has been taken over as the headquarters of Brigadier-General Samuel McGowan’s brigade as part of the fortified defenses around Petersburg\, VA. On guard duty this particular night are members of the 13th South Carolina Regiment\, Company C. The 13th has served in many battles and campaigns to include Gettysburg and the Overland Campaign. To this date\, the regiment has been reduced to 244 men. Company C was recruited from Spartanburg\, SC and only 28 men remain out of the original 100 who enlisted. Morale is low and the company will lose one more man this night. Not due to enemy action but\, from a more sinister cause… closer to home. \nEach night at 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm tours will take place and capacity is limited. DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Dr. Colin Woodward as he shares the story of “Marching Masters: Slaves\, Race\, and the Confederate Army.” \nIn Marching Masters\, Colin Woodward explores not only the importance of slavery in the minds of Confederate soldiers but also its effects on military policy and decision making. Beyond showing how essential the defense of slavery was in motivating Confederate troops to fight\, Woodward examines the Rebels’ persistent belief in the need to defend slavery and deploy it militarily as the war raged on. Slavery proved essential to the Confederate war machine\, and Rebels strove to protect it just as they did Southern cities\, towns\, and railroads. Slaves served by the tens of thousands in the Southern armies. They served not as soldiers\, but as menial laborers who cooked meals\, washed horses\, and dug ditches. Woodward continues the story into the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras beyond the Confederacy’s surrender. \nDrawing upon hundreds of soldiers’ letters\, diaries\, and memoirs\, Marching Masters combines the latest social and military history in its compelling examination of the last bloody years of slavery in the United States. \nColin Edward Woodward was educated at Trinity College in Hartford and Louisiana State University\, Baton Rouge\, where he received his Ph.D. in 2005. Dr. Woodward is a historian and writer\, with fifteen years of experience working at colleges\, universities\, and museums. SUMMARY:World War II in the Pacific
DESCRIPTION:This living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting in the Pacific Theater and the home front during World War II. Guests will have the opportunity to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater and about a number of different aspects of a soldier’s life to include weapons\, signals and communications. Impressions will range from U.S. Army and Marines to those of British and Russian allies. Civilian living historians will portray goings on at the home front and USO activities stateside. Demonstrations will include weapons and a 1940’s military uniform and civilian fashion show. A special display of vintage pre-war cars will take visitors back to this pivotal time in America when the transition from peacetime to war took place. \nPartner museums to include the MacArthur Memorial\, U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum\, U.S. Army Ordnance TSF\, U.S. Army Women’s Museum and the Virginia War Memorial will have displays and more for visitors to see and experience. Presentations by authors and historians will be made on the following subjects: U.S. 11th Airborne Division and the Los Banos Raid by Jeremy C. Holm\, Japanese Armor by Eury Cantillo\, “Freedom and Food:” Civilian Experiences in the Philippine Internment Camps of WWII presentation by Jennifer Cottle and Propaganda Poster Art by Colin Romanick. \nJeremy C. Holm is a renowned expert on and historian for the 11th Airborne Division and is the author of the much-acclaimed book WHEN ANGELS FALL: FROM TOCCOA TO TOKYO\, THE 511TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT IN WORLD WAR II. Jeremy is an experienced speaker and lecturer who has traveled around the world to inspire\, educate and entertain audiences from Fortune 500 companies to small community gatherings. Jeremy also curates the 511th PIR’s online historical museum\, www.511pir.com\, and is laboring to build a similar online education center for the 11th Airborne Division at www.11thairborne.com. Jeremy is also excited to announce that he is currently working to produce a two-part series that will cover the full history of the 11th Airborne Division in World War II. \nEury Cantillo began a museum career shortly after college graduation\, first working as a historic interpreter at Plimoth Plantation\, later sailing a replica of one of Columbus’ ships through the Panama Canal\, and then working as the Outreach Coordinator at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester\, MA. At the height of the war in Iraq\, he decided to enlist in the US Army. Cantillo served as an Artillery Officer in the 3rd Infantry Division\, which included a 15 month deployment to the city of Ramadi in Western Iraq. In addition he lead a variety of supply convoys through the desert\, and finally ended the deployment as a Battery Fire Direction Officer involved in the field testing of the Excalibur GPS guided artillery round. He then used the GI Bill to earn a Master’s degree in education\, and began working for the National Park Service at the Lexington and Concord battlefield\, the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings\, and the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington\, DC. He then worked as the Director of Education for the Navy’s Submarine Force museum\, moved to CMH as the Curator at the Army’s Aviation museum before becoming the Curator of the Army’s Ordnance Training Support Facility\, the first operational TSF in the system. \nJennifer Cottle is a Museum Attendant and Museum Specialist working with the MacArthur Memorial and the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation. Since becoming a staff member she has worked with material in the museum collections to help share the stories of the thousands of Allied civilians interned in the Philippines during WWII with the public through virtual outreach and education programs. Jennifer graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in Anthropology in 2014 and worked in the field of archaeology for several years before joining the staff at the MacArthur Memorial. She is currently pursuing a M.A. in Public History and plans to incorporate the food history of the WWII internment camps into her capstone project. \nColin Romanick is the current Director of Marketing & Development for Pamplin Historical Park and has worked in the museum field for over 20 years in the areas of education\, finance and marketing. He is a graduate of Christopher Newport University where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration. Romanick worked for the City of Newport News\, Historic Services Division for 13 years. During that time he conducted educational programs\, tours and assisted in the acquisition of artifacts for the Virginia War Museum. Romanick is a published author and contributing writer of numerous historical articles for various periodicals. Prior to joining Pamplin Historical Park\, he has worked as an educator for the US Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee and conducted tours at historic Endview Plantation and Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News\, VA. \nViewings of the Virginia War Memorials’\, Virginians at War: Pearl Harbor which combines original footage with first-hand accounts to tell stories from the “day that will live in infamy” will be shown over the weekend in the park’s Education Center. \nChildren will enjoy craft activities to include World War II coloring books and making a take home project of the Roosevelt’s Scottie Dog “Fala.” \nWorld War II\, which was fought between 1939 and 1945\, cost an estimated 85 million casualties both military and civilian worldwide. The United States military casualties amounted to 416\,800. While many were thankful for the surrender in Europe on May 8\, 1945 the war in the Pacific raged on and was far from over. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the first half of the year gave a glimpse of the carnage awaiting invasion forces set to strike the Japanese home islands. A planned Allied invasion on the island of Kyushu was set for November 1st. There 500\,000 Japanese troops were in position and another 6 million were under arms or able to be called into service. This invasion did not come to pass. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Imperial Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The terms were accepted on August 14\, 1945 and a formal document signing ceremony took place aboard the U.S.S.
