DESCRIPTION:Join historians for a special tour in conjunction with our 22nd Annual Civil War Symposium on October 19\, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nPamplin Historical Park Executive Director\, Jerry “Dez” Desmond will begin the tour at the Park and then lead tour attendees on an experience as the hidden treasures at Fort Lee are revealed from amazing museums to historic World War I trenches. \nThe tour features two world class museums including the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum and the U.S. Army Women’s Museum. Both museums feature amazing displays and one of a kind artifacts like those belonging to General U. S. Grant and the story of Medal of Honor recipient Dr. Mary Walker and others. \n“Since 1957 the Quartermaster Museum has preserved the history and heritage of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps\, the Army’s oldest logistic branch. For more than two centuries Quartermaster soldiers have fed\, clothed and equipped the United States Army.” – U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum \n“The U.S. Army Women’s Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to Army women. The Museum honors women’s contributions to the Army from the Revolutionary War to the present\, telling their stories with interactive exhibits and videos throughout the gallery\, as well as film presentations in our theater. The museum also has an extensive research and learning center\, and memorial garden.” – U.S. Army Women’s Museum \nTour attendees will enjoy a lunch on this active military base in one of the mess halls alongside active duty soldiers. A U.S. Army historian will also guide attendees through the fort’s training trenches that remain from World War I\, while sharing parallels between the Civil War and the Great War. DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier has established a new Civil War Roundtable and it’s meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Park’s Education Center. \nThis month Dr. Brian McKnight will speak at the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable on “Champ Ferguson’s Guerrilla War”. \nDr. McKnight is currently a professor of history and the Founding Director\, Center for Appalachian Studies at the University of Virginia at Wise. He has authored three books and co-authored a fourth titled The Age of Andrew Jackson. McKnight has been recognized for his efforts to preserve regional and local history with awards ranging from the 2006 James I. Robertson Literary Prize for Confederate History for Contested Borderland to being the recipient of the 2011 Tennessee History Book Award for Confederate Outlaw. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable\, founded in 2018\, is dedicated to the study\, preservation\, and discussion of the people and events that were part of the War Between the States (1861-1865).  \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month (except June\, July\, and August) at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join us a special Home School field trip program for home school families and associations. Home School Tours at Pamplin Historical Park include educational programs that use fun\, participatory learning techniques to teach historical lessons about life in the nineteenth century. \nEach Home School Tour includes a visit to the award-winning exhibit Duty Called Me Here and two hands-on programs\, Plantation Life\, and A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, led by Pamplin Historical Park Educators. These programs are individually designed for children from third to twelfth grade. \nDuty Called Me Here brings visitors face-to-face with the experiences of the nearly three million Americans who became soldiers during the Civil War. Personal audio players enable students to follow the true story of a “soldier comrade.” In Plantation Life\, students study how free and enslaved Virginia families lived 150 years ago and how that lifestyle changed during the Civil War. In A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, students participate in military drills\, observe weapons demonstrations\, and visit the Park’s recreated Military Encampment\, where they experience elements of a soldier’s life. \nTour times are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tours cost $9.50 for children grades K-12 and $11.00 for adults. SUMMARY:Focus Weekend: Technological Innovations
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is hosting a special weekend event focused on technological innovations both on the battlefield and on the farm during the antebellum era and the Civil War on August 18-19\, 2018. \nIt is said that for every year of warfare\, technology is advanced ten years or more. This is due to additional funding and a total commitment of a nation’s resources and talent toward achieving victory. Advancements that help to win ultimate victory on the battlefield can also change industry and day-to-day life on the home front. \nDaily between 10:30 am and 3:00 pm park visitors will be able to see period demonstrations in the Park’s military encampment area highlighting advancements in military technology from communications including the telegraph\, to evolutions in weaponry from cap and ball to the rim fire cartridge. One example is President Abraham Lincoln who was the first president to communicate\, with his officers and lead real-time strategies and deliver orders using the telegraph. \nFarming also saw new technologies in the mid-19th century\, which made work easier and more productive. The mechanical reaper invented by Cyrus McCormick in 1834 increased food production\, by harvesting crops mechanically and helped to meet the needs of a growing population and exports. Park staff will share these agricultural advancements and the Southern resistance to change\, at the Park’s Tudor Hall Plantation. \nVisitors are also invited to explore the original Breakthrough Battlefield with miles of trails or take a walk through the crop and vegetable gardens at the Field Quarters which include beautiful sun flowers. \nThese special weekend programs and those usually offered daily at the Park are included with regular paid general admission. Individual general admission is $1.00 from now through Labor Day (September 3) 2018 as part of the Park’s $1 Days of Summer.

DESCRIPTION:Daily between 10:30 am and 3:00 pm park visitors will be able to see period demonstrations highlighting military medicine and medical advancements used on and off of the battlefield and learning how pharmaceuticals played a role in prevention and treatment of diseases. \nThe American Civil War saw seven out of every ten soldier fatalities caused by disease rather than battlefield injuries. The lack of cleanliness and sanitation certainly added to the deaths as American poet and Civil War nurse Walt Whitman described one hospital as “quite crowded\, upstairs and down\, everything impromptu\, no system\, all bad enough\, but I have no doubt the best that can be done; all the wounds pretty bad\, some frightful\, the men in their old clothes\, unclean and bloody.” \nDysentery\, typhoid and pneumonia seemed more dangerous than enemy bullets. Those soldiers who were injured in battle typically had to endure amputations\, to remove shattered limbs. Even then\, only about seventy-five percent of them would survive the operations and fevers that followed. In spite of this\, one surgeon defended the volume of amputations by stating\, “I have no hesitation in saying that far more lives were lost from refusal to amputate than by amputation.” \nThis event allows visitors the chance to learn about these struggles of sick and wounded soldiers and about the men and women in medical services who cared for them. \nThese special weekend programs and those usually offered daily at the Park are included with regular paid general admission. DESCRIPTION:Join editor Janet Elizabeth Croon for a discussion and signing of a Civil War Title: The War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham\, 1860-1865. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeRoy Gresham was born in 1847 to an affluent and prominent slaveholding family in Macon\, Georgia. As a young child he suffered a horrific leg and back injury that left him an invalid. Educated\, inquisitive\, perceptive\, and exceptionally witty\, the 12-year-old began keeping a journal in 1860—just before secession and Civil War tore the country and his world apart. He continued to write even as his health deteriorated until both the war and his life ended in 1865. His unique view of a waning age is published here for the first time in A Son of Georgia: The Civil War Journals of LeRoy Wiley Gresham\, 1860-1865. Edited and annotated with meticulous care by Janet Croon\, A Son of Georgia: The Civil War Journals of LeRoy Wiley Gresham\, 1860-1865 captures the spirit and the character of a young privileged white teenager witnessing the demise of his world even as his own body is slowly failing him. SUMMARY:$1 Days of Summer at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is offering $1.00 general daily admission throughout the summer from Memorial Day May 28 through Labor Day September 3\, 2018. This drastically reduced admission rate will allow all people an opportunity to access this amazing facility and share in our national heritage from the Antebellum period\, including the institution of slavery\, through the Civil War. $1 admission has been made possible in part by The Bank of Southside Virginia and through private donations. \nThe Park strives to share the stories of civilians\, enslaved and common soldiers with all people as their stories are now part of the American experience\, which belongs to all Americans. All summer long\, visitors can share in the experiences in the museums\, at four historic homes and in the Park with new devices from Orpheo. These devices provide audio and images on a five inch screen at over 80 locations throughout the 424-acre campus. Additional focus weekends will offer unique historical interpretation programs. \nIn 2017\, the Park experimented by offer a $1 admission weekend which saw an over 1000% increase in attendance and engaged members of the local and regional communities who had never visited the Park. This served to break down economic and cultural barriers by allowing guests from all walks of life and backgrounds to explore the Park. \nDuring last year’s $1 admission event\, Park Executive Director Jerry Desmond spoke with one family of seven including four children ages 5-12. Desmond states\, “Seeing my name tag\, the father thanked me explaining that he had lived in Dinwiddie County all of this life. DESCRIPTION:The Park is hosting An Evening with the Petersburg Symphony on May 26\, 2018. The Petersburg Symphony Orchestra will perform patriotic and popular arrangements in the Park’s Freedom Garden\, adjacent to the original Breakthrough site which ended the 292-day siege of Petersburg on April 2\, 1865. \nThis is an outdoor lawn concert and attendees are invited to bring their own lawn blankets or chairs. Adult beverages and refreshments will be available for purchase beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the symphony will start its performance at 6:30 p.m. The event is rain or shine with an alternate inclement weather indoor location on site. \nTickets can be pre-purchased at the main Park admission desk and at The Bucket Trade in Old Towne Petersburg and are $20 ($18 Park members) in advance and $25 ($22.50 Park members) on the day of the event. SUMMARY:Breakthrough Battlefield Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Park historians as they tour the Breakthrough Battle of April 2nd\, 1865 while bringing the conflict and personalities alive for this special experience on the actual battlefield. The tour will begin at the historic Hart Farm which survived the battle and has been restored to it’s wartime appearance. After a brief overview of the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns\, guests will then embark on a tour of the battlefield to explore the original terrain features while incorporating the history that unfolded on this National Landmark site resulting in the collapse of Petersburg defenses and the withdrawal of Confederate forces from Richmond. Seven days later after a running fight out to Appomattox Courthouse\, the war would be over on April 9\, 1865. Pristine earthworks\, rifle pits\, artillery redans and the picturesque Large and Small Meadows are included in this walking tour. \nSpace on this tour is limited. DESCRIPTION:Join Wayne Tucker as he speaks on the intriguing life of Elizabeth Keckley. Keckley was born enslaved and lived in Dinwiddie County and Petersburg as a young girl. She eventually purchased her freedom with her seamstress skills after being moved to Missouri. With her freedom\, she became the premier dress maker in Washington D.C.\, just before and during the Civil War. Keckley’s impressive work led to her selection as the personal White House dressmaker\, close friend\, and confidante of Mrs. Lincoln. \nBlack History Month events are included with regular paid Park admission or active Park memberships.

Kennedy said\, “We celebrate the past to awaken the future.” Park staff will share information on volunteer opportunities at the Park and hold on-site interviews on Saturday\, Feb. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, Sunday\, Feb. 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Thursday\, Feb. 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday\, Feb. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier\, located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. \nThese volunteer recruitment open houses are held in preparation for the busy spring field trip and travel season. Volunteers are vital in assisting Park staff with visitor needs\, especially during the busy school season. \nVolunteers may assist in a variety of areas that focus on the Park’s goal to help preserve history and promote education.
