SUMMARY:Voices from the Shadows
DESCRIPTION:Costumed guides portraying “agents of death” will lead participants by candlelight on a spine-chilling tour through the historic park and Breakthrough Battlefield. At each stop\, guests will encounter an escaped prisoner on the run\, a guard on picket duty being ambushed\, a surgeon performing grisly work in a field hospital and more. \nThese and other ghouls will recount their stories and share some of the more macabre and spirit-filled folklore from the past.  Tours will be accompanied by sights and sounds that heighten the senses while breaking the silence of the night. \nBased on true figures folklore and stories of the Civil War era\, the naturally haunting atmosphere of Pamplin Historical Park gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Park and battlefield after dark. “Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.” – Edgar Allen Poe \nThis event is offered on Friday\, October 25 and Saturday October 26 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required. RSVP on Eventbrite to ensure a spot on the tour. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. The minimum recommended age for this nighttime tour is six years old. Instead\, our own Director of Education\, Interpretation\, Visitor Services & Collections\, Tim Talbott will speak on “Visionary or Iconoclastic: Maj. Gen. Patrick Cleburne and His Proposal to Emancipate and Arm Slaves for the Confederacy.” \nOctober’s Round Table guest speaker is the nationally recognized award-winning author and historian Ed Bearss. Mr. Bearss will be speaking on the “April 1\, 1865\, Battle of Five Forks”.  Mr. Bearss is a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II\, a military historian and author known for his work on the American Civil War and World War II eras. He is also a popular tour guide of historic battlefields for The Smithsonian Associates. Bearss served as Chief Historian of the National Park Service from 1981 to 1994 and is currently Chief Historian Emeritus. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month (except June\, July\, and August) at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:The Park’s education staff is offering a special field trip program on for home school families and associations. Home School Tours at Pamplin Historical Park include educational programs that use fun\, participatory learning techniques to teach historical lessons about life in the nineteenth century. \nEach Home School Tour includes a visit to the award-winning exhibit Duty Called Me Here and two hands-on programs\, Plantation Life\, and A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, led by Pamplin Historical Park educators. These programs are individually designed for children from third to twelfth grade. \nDuty Called Me Here brings visitors face-to-face with the experiences of the nearly three million Americans who became soldiers during the Civil War. Personal audio players enable students to follow the true story of a “soldier comrade.” In Plantation Life\, students study how free and enslaved Virginia families lived 150 years ago and how that lifestyle changed during the Civil War. In A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, students participate in military drills\, observe weapons demonstrations\, and visit the Park’s recreated Military Encampment\, where they experience elements of a soldier’s life. \nTour times are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tours cost $9.50 for children grades K-12 and $11.00 for adults. (Rain or shine). Reservations and a non-refundable prepayment by credit card or check are required. Participants will need to bring their own brown bag lunch. Nau III Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia . A graduate of the University of Virginia’s doctoral program\, Janney most recently taught at Purdue University. She is the author of two outstanding works in the field of Civil War studies\, Burying the Dead but Not the Past: Ladies’ Memorial Associations and the Lost Cause and Remembering the Civil War: Reunion and the Limits of Reconciliation\, both published by the University of North Carolina Press. She also has edited two volumes of essays\, published numerous scholarly articles\, and is completing a study of the demobilization of the Army of Northern Virginia. Dr. Janney received both the Charles S. DESCRIPTION:  \n\nCelebrate National Honey Bee Day over the entire weekend with us. The Buzz’n & Weav’n event pays homage to beekeepers whose labors insure that we have bees to pollinate crops while also exploring the art of hand spinning natural fibers from animals over the centuries. \nPrograms will include a bee petting zoo by Rockwood Park Backyard Beekeepers Association and Haley’s Honey Meadery will have mead\, honey and bee pollen to share with visitors as they also explain the process to harvest and produce these sweet products. The Huguenot Beekeepers Association will display observation bee hives and explain the daily efforts and processes that these hard working little insects go through to provide so much to humankind. \nThe Clothos Handspinners Guild will demonstrate traditional and modern spinning wheels\, drop spindles and share various activities of the fiber arts. Visitors will learn about the process to dye yarn and how that has changed over the years. In addition to our own sheep and their wool contribution\, Mardelian Farms will have goats and a display with discussion about goat byproducts\, milk and soap. \n\nCraft activities will be included with admission for children to create and take home bee and sheep or goat related projects. \nA specially tailored Tudor Hall Plantation walking tour will be offered. The Tudor Hall walking tour this particular weekend will focus on and incorporate the plantation activities surrounding beekeeping and production of their sweet delights. The various animals\, such as our own sheep\, that produce fiber will also be discussed along with types of products made from wool and other natural fibers. \nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission. \n\n

SUMMARY:From Forests to Fields
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the mid-19th century efforts to use wood in civilian products and military construction on July 20-21\, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.\n\nPrograms will include several 30-minute woodworking demonstrations at both the Tudor Hall Plantation and the Military Encampment areas. These programs will occur multiple times daily\, so that visitors will have several opportunities to view them regardless of when they arrive.\n\nStaff in period attire at Tudor Hall will demonstrate woodworking skills and the required tools used in the production of common items of the era. Visitors are invited to join in on discussions to include period methods of selecting\, cutting and marketing wood products.\n\nVisitors can also join Civil War soldiers at the nearby Military Encampment as they demonstrate the construction of earthworks\, revetments and other obstacles. Several finished examples will be on hand and guests are encouraged to to help weave gabion baskets used in earthwork construction. Discussions will include how soldiers used every part of the tree for different purposes from firewood to building fabrication.\n\nA specially tailored Tudor Hall Plantation walking tour titled “From Forests to Fields” will be offered at 11:00-11:45 am\, and again from 2:00-2:45 pm. The Tudor Hall walking tour this particular day will focus on and incorporate the necessary removal of timber to create the fields where cash crops grew. Particular attention will be paid to explaining the different types of wooden structures commonly found on Southside Virginia plantations and their various methods of construction. Opportunities for comparing and contrasting the master’s\, and the enslaved (both domestic and field slaves) living quarters as well as their role in the deforestation and construction processes will also be covered. Enslaved people\, from field hand to skilled slaves (carpenters\, joiners\, and coopers) worked with and made products fashioned from wood virtually every day of their lives.\n\nWe will also offer the Breakthrough Battlefield Tour twice during the day\, from 1:00-1:45 pm\, and again from 3:00-3:45 pm. Additional emphasis will be placed on comparing and contrasting today’s battlefield landscape to that of period photographs that vividly illustrate the denuded terrain. Guides will also stress how soldiers constructed earthworks using local timber during the Petersburg Campaign. Tour discussions will also include sharing quotes from soldiers on both sides who described their use of timber and their thoughts on the denuded landscape during the Petersburg Campaign.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

Campers will also discover some the technology used during the Civil War that assisted spies in their work. The telegraph and the hot air balloon were both relatively new inventions that clandestine agents exploited during the war. By the end of the experience\, not only will campers have a better understanding of spying during the Civil War but\, they will also have had a hands-on experience pretending to be spies and complete a group spy mission. The camp is open to ages 8-11. Each day of the camp is from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Campers must pre-register and make payment. Camp cost is $100 per camper. DESCRIPTION:As essayist John Burroughs stated “That which distinguishes this day from all others is that then both orators and artillerymen shoot blank cartridges.” In the spirit of Burroughs’ quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations of 1856 Independence Day campaign speeches and a ceremony with a cannon fire salute.\n\nFamilies are invited to participate in 19th century games such as a sack race and 3-legged race among others to be held on the picturesque Tudor Hall lawn. A period baseball game will also be held at the Battlefield Center Field where guests are invited to join in the game. \n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond.\n\nCivil War programming will be joined by an American Revolutionary War living-history demonstration where historical comparisons will be made between the soldiers of both wars. These programs will occur multiple times daily\, so that visitors will have several opportunities to view them regardless of when they arrive.\n\nStaff in period attire at Tudor Hall will demonstrate open hearth cooking skills and meal preparation for several common dishes. Visitors are invited to join in on discussions to include period methods of acquiring ingredients\, preservation\, preparation\, and serving meals.\n\n\nVisitors can also join soldiers at the nearby Military Encampment as they demonstrate camp fire cooking skills by preparing a few common soldier meals. Explanations on how period military rations were prepared\, packaged\, transported\, and distributed will also be provided.\n\n\nA special Tudor Hall Plantation walking tour titled “Feeding Body and Soul: Plantation Foodways” will be offered at 11:00-11:45 am\, and again from 2:00-2:45 pm. The Tudor Hall walking tour for this special event weekend will focus on and incorporate the various garden vegetables and edible demonstration crops that are grown at Pamplin Historical Park. Particular attention will be paid to explaining the similar and different items that plantation owners and the enslaved consumed in their diets. This includes the means of production\, primary methods of preparation\, and how food was distributed on many Southside Virginia plantations.\n\n\nThe Breakthrough Battlefield Tour will also be offered twice during the day\, from 1:00-1:45 pm\, and again from 3:00-3:45 pm. Additional emphasis will be placed on Grant’s ever-lengthening and Lee’s ever-shortening supply lines\, the US Military Railroad\, and how these factors improved or threatened the common soldier’s ability to receive rations. A discussion about soldier morale\, which was partly linked to their diets\, will also be included.\n\n\nAll event programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

The program will also include an artillery firing followed by the presentation of the colors and a playing of Taps. \nA Breakthrough Battlefield Tour will give visitors a chance to learn about the events of April 2\, 1865 which is followed by bugle calls and a Civil War camp life demonstration. DESCRIPTION:Join this month’s guest speaker Barton Meyers\, Associate Professor of History at Washington and Lee University as he talks about “The Guerrilla Hunters”. Dr. Myers completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in History at the University of Georgia and was the Miller Postdoctoral Fellow in Military History 2009-10 at Cornell. Myers is the author of the award-winning Executing Daniel Bright: Race\, Loyalty\, and Guerrilla Violence in a Coastal Carolina Community\, 1861-1865\, Rebels against the Confederacy: North Carolina’s Unionists and The guerrilla hunters: Irregular conflicts during the Civil War . \nProfessor Myers has taught at Cornell University\, the University of Georgia\, and Texas Tech University\, and before becoming a professor\, served as a public historian with the National Park Service at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park where he led tours of some of America’s most historic battlefields. Currently\, he teaches a number of popular American military history and public history courses including his intensive battlefield travel course “The Art of Command during the American Civil War.” He is also a past nominee for the Rising Star Faculty Award given by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. \nDr. Myers is a recipient of prestigious grants and fellowships from the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation\, the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park and The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is launching a “25th Anniversary Photo Contest” to celebrate 25 years of education and preservation. The contest is open to all U.S. residents 18 years of age and above.  This contest provides an opportunity for entrants to capture the natural beauty of the 424-acre park and its historic structures and battlefield. \nOne of the most well know photographers in history\, Mathew Brady once said\, “My greatest aim has been to advance the art of photography and to make it what I think I have\, a great and truthful medium of history.” Now park visitors of all ages have this unique opportunity to capture their own moment in time and enter to win one of two $100 cash prizes. \nThe contest will accept photo submissions from March 10 through May 10\, 2019.  All photographs must have been taken at Pamplin Historical Park during the contest period.  Photographs taken prior to March 10\, 2019 are not eligible to be entered. All photographs taken at Pamplin Historical Park are limited to exterior locations. \nDigital photographs only will be accepted.  Photos can be uploaded electronically (along with a completed entry form) and submitted via email to generalmailbox@pamplinpark.org. Entrants may submit photos in one of two categories: Professional or Non-professional. For the purposes of this contest\, a professional is deemed to mean anyone who receives income from their photography and/or services. Participants may submit up to two (2) photographs in one of two categories: Professional or Non-professional. Desmond was involved with over 20 mostly Civil War-related museum projects across the Southeast while serving with La Paglia and Associates. \nDesmond has received the Tennessee Association of Museums Award of Excellence for four consecutive years 1996-1999. More recently\, he has served as the Director of the Rome History Museum in Georgia and the Birmingham History Center in Alabama. Hennessy is one of the leading Civil War battle historians of his generation and author of the definitive book on the Battle of Second Manassas\, Return to Bull Run. He previously served as a ranger at the Manassas battlefield and is currently the chief historian at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. SUMMARY:Slavery & Freedom: Lectures & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:“Who freed the slaves?” Since the end of the Civil War this complex question is one that many people have sought to answer definitively. Often due to the many different ways that Americans remember the process of emancipation\, its answer remains elusive. However\, thinking about this significant question opens opportunities for learning about different historical perspectives. Come hear Tim Talbott ponder this question and explore the possible answers at 1:00 p.m. \nA second speaker\, Eugene Meyer will speak at 2:00 p.m. about his recently published book Five for Freedom: The African American Soldiers in John Brown’s Army. Late on the evening of October 16\, 1859\, John Brown and his band of 18 raiders descended on Harpers Ferry at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. In an ill-fated attempt to incite a slave insurrection\, they seized the federal arsenal\, took hostages and retreated to a fire engine house where they barricaded themselves until a contingent of US Marines battered their way in on October 18. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe raiders were routed\, and several were captured. Soon after\, they were tried\, convicted and hanged. Among Brown’s raiders were five African Americans whose lives and deaths have long been overshadowed by their martyred leader and\, even today\, are little remembered. Two—John Copeland and Shields Green—were executed. Two others—Dangerfield Newby and Lewis Leary—died at the scene. Newby\, the first to go\, was shot in the neck\, then dismembered by townspeople and left for the hogs. He was trying to liberate his enslaved wife and children. \nOf the five\, only Osborne Perry Anderson escaped and lived to publish the lone insider account of the event that\, most historians agree\, was a catalyst to the catastrophic Civil War that followed over the country’s original sin of slavery. \nFive for Freedom is the story of these five brave men\, the circumstances in which they were born and how they came together at this time and place\, grew to manhood and died. Their lives and deaths affected future generations\, not just of their descendants\, but of us all. It is a story that continues to resonate in the present. \nThis event is included with regular Park admission or Park membership and a limited quantity of books will be available for purchase and signing. \n

SUMMARY:Veterans Day Observance & World War I Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is observing this Veterans Day with an observance ceremony and additional activities on November 11\, 2018. This year marks the centennial of the conclusion and armistice of World War I fought 1914-1918. Over 4.7 million Americans served in “the war to end all wars” and approximately 63\,000 did not return home. A further 200\,000 were wounded bearing emotional and physical scars for the remainder of their lives. This Veterans Day\, the park will honor the service of all service members who have fought in defense of America and liberty from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. \nA remembrance ceremony will start at 10:45 a.m. with a presentation of colors by the Virginia State University ROTC Color Guard followed by a Ringing of Bell Service and artillery salute. This will be followed by a living-history demonstration where park visitors can interact with World War I Doughboys and learn more about the American soldier in the “Great War”. A walking tour led by park staff will explore the parallels between the original Civil War earthworks at the park and the trench fighting that took place in World War I. Inside the park’s Education Center United States Army National Guard Historian Alexander Barnes will afterwards present a talk titled “Virginia’s Preparation and Participation in World War I” at 2:30 p.m. Activities will conclude with a selection of Civil War soldier’s songs in a musical performance by the Haversacks and Hardtack String Band in The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. Throughout the day a special display of artifacts from World War I will be available for viewing in the museum. \nAll activities and the ceremony are included with regular park admission to the general public and free to active duty service members and veterans.

SUMMARY:In Memory of Self and Comrades: Book Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:Join author Michael K. Shaffer as he discusses his new book In memory of Self and Comrades which is a story about Thomas W. Colley\, 1st Virginia Cavalry. This event is included with regular admission.\n\nThomas W. Colley served in one of the most active and famous units in the Civil War\, the 1st Virginia Cavalry\, which fought in battles in the Eastern Theater\, from First Manassas/Bull Run to the defense of Petersburg. Colley was born November 11\, 1837\, outside Abingdon\, Virginia\, and grew up knowing the daily demands of life on a farm. In May 1861\, along with the other members of the Washington Mounted Rifles\, he left his home in Washington County and reported to camp in Richmond. During the war\, Colley received wounds on three different occasions: first at Waterloo Bridge in 1862\, again at Kelly’s Ford in 1863\, and finally at Haw’s Shop in 1864. The engagement at Haw’s Shop resulted in the amputation of his left foot\, thereby ending his wartime service.\n\n\n\nThe first modern scholarly edition of Colley’s writings\, In Memory of Self and Comrades dramatizes Colley’s fate as a wounded soldier mustered out before the war’s conclusion. Colley’s postwar reflections on the war reveal his struggle to earn a living and maintain his integrity while remaining somewhat unreconciled to his condition. He found much of his solace through writing and sought to advance his education after the war. As one of an estimated 20\,000 soldiers who underwent amputation during the Civil War\, his memoirs reveal the challenges of living with what many might recognize today as post-traumatic stress disorder. Annotations from editor Michael K. Shaffer provide further context to Colley’s colorful and insightful writings on both his own condition and the condition of other veterans also dealing with amputations. \nMichael K. Shaffer is an instructor at Kennesaw State University’s College of Continuing and Professional Education. He is the author of Washington County\, Virginia\, in the Civil War.
