SUMMARY:Volunteer Open Houses
DESCRIPTION:We offer fun volunteer opportunities to help preserve history\, and promote education! As President John F. Kennedy said\, “Every person can make a difference\, and every person should try.” Park staff will share information on volunteer opportunities at the Park and hold on-site interviews on Thursday\, January 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, Tuesday\, January. 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, Saturday\, February 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier\, located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. \nThese volunteer recruitment open houses are held in preparation for the busy spring field trip and travel season. Volunteers are vital in assisting Park staff with visitor needs\, especially during the busy school season. \nVolunteers may assist in a variety of areas that focus on the Park’s goal to help preserve history and promote education. Volunteers from all walks of life are welcome to attend: mature teenagers who want to expand their life experience\, retirees who have time to do something they have always wanted to do\, unemployed citizens who want to keep their skills sharp\, and college students who want to give back to the community. \nThe question of why to volunteer is best summed up by former U.S. President George H. W. Bush’s statement\, “We can find meaning and reward by serving some higher purpose than ourselves\, a shining purpose\, the illumination of a thousand points of light.” \nlunteerFor more information contact Christine Wuebker\, Sr. Education\, Interpretation and Volunteer Specialist\, at 804-861-2408 or email cwuebker@pamplinpark.org.

SUMMARY:A Christmas Past
DESCRIPTION:Experience the holidays in 19th century style. Families will enjoy the opportunity for children to meet a ‘Thomas Nast’ Santa Claus including photo opportunities and the chance to enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. Thomas Nast is considered to be the “Father of the American Cartoon” and among his most notable works is his creation of the modern version of Santa Claus. \nChildren will have the opportunity to participate in a craft making activity where the finished holiday craft can be taken home or presented as a gift to a friend. Guests are invited to sign a holiday card for mailing to active duty soldiers serving abroad away from home and family for the holidays. \nEveryone can step into the past with holiday trimmings and décor as the historic Tudor Hall is transformed into a mid-1800’s home for the holidays. Costumed interpreters will provide holiday specific programming throughout the day for this full immersion experience. As former U.S. President Calvin Coolidge said\, “Christmas is not a time nor a season\, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill\, to be plenteous in mercy\, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” \nSoldiers throughout time spent some holidays away from friends and family and Civil War soldiers did as well. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how soldiers decorated their quarters for the holidays and celebrated Christmas in the field while on campaign. Costumed interpreters will portray these soldiers and bring this special experience to life. \nAll activities are included with regular park admission and children ages 5 and under receive free admission.

SUMMARY:Educate for the Future on #GIVINGTUESDAY
DESCRIPTION:Join Pamplin Historical Park this December 3\, 2019 for #GivingTuesday as we celebrate by accepting donations to support the A. Wilson Greene Scholarship Fund which provides funding for schools struggling with field trip transportation costs. Help us reach our goal of $10\,000 to help fund the cost of motor coach rentals for under-funded schools. \n#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals\, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday\, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on December 3rd and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back. \nThe A. Wilson Greene Scholarship Fund (AWGSF) is a grant program that assists schools and other tour groups with financial support for transportation costs to attend field trips at Pamplin Historical Park. Pamplin Historical Park is aware that student groups are often prevented from scheduling field trips due to the cost of providing transportation. The AWGSF is designed to help defray the cost of transportation so that more students and other tour groups are able to experience the extraordinary programming offered at Pamplin Historical Park. \nFounded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y – a community and cultural center in New York City − #GivingTuesday inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $300 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations\, and much more was given in volunteer hours\, donations of food and clothing\, and acts of kindness. \nShare the past and strengthen communities today by joining Pamplin Historical Park’s #GivingTuesday initiative and visit Donate Now or call (804) 861-2408 now.

SUMMARY:Toys for Tots Collection
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park is proud to be a collection point for Toys for Tots from November 25 through December 13\, 2019. Park admission is not required to drop off a gift. \nVisitors are invited to bring a new unwrapped gift during this time to the Park for distribution to under-privileged children whose parents cannot afford to buy gifts for Christmas. This coincides with the mission of the Toys for Tots program which “is to collect new\, unwrapped toys during October\, November and December each year\, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.” \nThe stated goal is to “deliver\, through a new toy at Christmas\, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible\, productive\, and patriotic citizens.” \nThe Toys for Tots program was founded in 1947 and is operated by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. As of 2016\, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed more than 512 million toys.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:As former U.S. President Ronald Reagan stated “We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give\, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty\, though it never was. Most of all\, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.” In the spirit of Reagan’s quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations on Medal of Honor recipients\, a comparison of Civil War and U.S. World War II soldiers\, a performance of soldier’s songs from the Civil War and a ceremony with cannon fire salute. \nPark Director of Education\, Tim Talbott will present a talk at 11:15 am on Medal of Honor recipients from the Breakthrough Battle which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The most notable of these was Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. \n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon with a presentation of colors by the Virginia State University ROTC Color Guard followed by a cannon fire salute. Afterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a World War II G.I. living-history demonstration where historical comparisons will be made between the soldiers of both wars. Visitors will see that some elements remain the same and many different as General George S. Patton observed in his quote\, “If everyone is thinking alike\, someone isn’t thinking.”\n\n\nFamilies are also invited to join in soldier’s songs at 2:45 pm from the Civil War with a live performance by the Haversacks and Hardtack String Band. Everyone will enjoy traditional songs of home such as “Just Before the Battle Mother” and more lighthearted songs like “Goober Peas.”\n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary display of World War II artifacts will also be available for viewing in the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:I Spy: A Civil War Spy Academy
DESCRIPTION:During this two-day camp\, participants will hear the stories of several Civil War spies\, both Union and Confederate\, who did what they could to help their cause through covert means. Campers will learn about the skills needed to be an effective spy; everything from code breaking to effective disguises.
