DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Homeschool field trip program designed especially for homeschool families and associations. Homeschool tours at Pamplin Historical Park include educational programs that use fun\, participatory learning techniques to teach historical lessons about life in the nineteenth century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach Homeschool tour includes a visit to the award-winning exhibit “Duty Called Me Here” and two hands-on programs\, “Civil War Battles\, and “The Civil War: Why They Fought\,” led by Pamplin Historical Park Educators. These programs are individually designed for children from third to twelfth grade. \n“Duty Called Me Here” brings visitors face-to-face with the experiences of the nearly three million Americans who became soldiers during the Civil War. Personal audio players enable students to follow the true story of a “soldier comrade.” In “Civil War Battles\,” students will learn the importance of geography and how fighting methods changed from its battles early in the war to the Breakthrough Battle where Pamplin Park is located today. In “The Civil War: Why They Fought\,” students will learn about the controversies and compromises that divided the United States before the Civil War by using maps and bar graphs and see how those decisions ultimately impacted people in the North and South. \nTour times are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tours cost $9.50 for children grades K-12 and $11.00 for adults. SUMMARY:Voices from the Shadows
DESCRIPTION:Costumed guides portraying “agents of death” will lead participants by candlelight on a spine-chilling tour through the historic park and Breakthrough Battlefield. At various stops\, guests will encounter escapees on the run\, the sounds of battle\, a surgeon performing grisly work in a field hospital and more. These and other ghouls will recount their stories and share some of the more macabre and spirit-filled folklore from the past. Tours will be accompanied by sights and sounds that heighten the senses while breaking the silence of the night. \nBased on folklore and stories of the Civil War era\, the naturally haunting atmosphere of Pamplin Historical Park gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Park and battlefield after dark. “All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” – Edgar Allen Poe \nThis event is offered on Friday\, October 23 and Saturday October 24 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required to ensure a spot on the tour. The lantern-lit walk begins at the museum\, located at 6125 Boydton Plank Rd.\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. The minimum recommended age for this nighttime tour is six years old. Flashlights are recommended for all tour participants. SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Ray Brown\, Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources Management at Manassas National Battlefield Park\, as he presents his presentation on “Soldier Remains at Manassas and Battlefield Archaeology.” \nThe Battle of Second Manassas was fought on August 28-30\, 1862. This fierce contest between Confederate and Union forces resulted in approximately 22\,000 casualties out of a total of around 112\,000 men engaged in the fight. Two of the mortally wounded Union soldiers were taken to a field hospital where they succumbed to their wounds. Afterwards\, they were placed in a shallow burials pit along with amputated limbs from other soldiers injured in the battle. They would lay undisturbed until 2014 when the National Park Service discovered the pit during a utility project. A journey of exploration then began leading the NPS to partner with the Smithsonian Institution and eventually lead them to Arlington National Cemetery. \nSpeaker Ray Brown is the Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources Management at Manassas National Battlefield Park. Brown has an over 32 year career with the National Park Service which has included working at Fredericksburg\, Philadelphia\, Petersburg and for the past 28 years at Manassas. Author and historian Don Johnson has this to say of Brown\, “Ray has a true understanding of the mission of the National Park Service as exhibited through his deep commitment to the preservation of our nation’s Battlefields. Ray is devoted to providing the public with accurate history and compelling interpretation of the gripping events that occurred on those grounds.” \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join in the fun of this automotive extravaganza. Experience the sights and sounds of elegant autos from yesteryear to the technologically advanced super cars of today at the historic Hart Farm\, which is part of Pamplin Historical Park located near Petersburg\, VA. The Breakthrough Car Show is open to all makes\, models and years of vehicles and anyone can bring out their ride and participate in the show. \nThe first 125 registered show vehicles receive goody bags and dash plaques. Pre-register your single vehicle by September 11\, 2020 for $15.00 or vehicle registration is $20.00 per vehicle thereafter and at the show. The first 125 registrants will also receive a $5.00 food coupon. \nShow day registration begins at 8:00 am. Participant’s Choice judging will result in over 48 awards. The award presentation will take place at 2:30 pm. Spectator parking and show admission is free. A reduced “day of show only” Pamplin Historical Park admission will be available for those who want to explore the 424 acres of battlefields\, historic homes\, museums and more. \nVendors will have food\, drinks and more throughout the day. SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Dr. Peter S. Carmichael as he takes attendees on a tale of adventure with “The Hicksford Raid” at the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. \nThe Hicksford Raid took place on December 7\, 1864 when Union Major General Govereur K. Warren led 28\,000 men south from petersburf to destroy the Petersburg Railroad between Stony Creek and the Meherrin River railroad bridge at Hicksford. If successful\, this would sever the Confederate supply line. Gen. Warren and his force would be confronted by Confederate generals Wade Hampton and W. H. F. Lee for a contest over this vital lifeline to Petersburg. Dr. Carmichael will captivate attendees with this story and reveal it’s outcome and place in history. \nDr. Carmichael is the Fluhrer Professor of History and the Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. He completed his doctorate at Penn State University and then went on to teach at Western Carolina University\, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and West Virginia University. Carmichael is the author of seven books including The Last Generation: Young Virginians in Peace\, War\, and Reunion\, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2005. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. James Broomall on August 6\, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. as he reveals “Private Confederacies: The Emotional Worlds of Southern Men as Citizens and Soldiers” at the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. \nDr. Broomall is the Director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War and an associate professor of History at Sheperd University located in Shepherdstown\, West Virginia. Prior to joining the Shepard University staff\, Broomall taught history at the University of North Florida and earned his master’s degree in history and museum studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \n\nBroomall’s passion for Civil War-era history has lead him to work in a variety of academic institutions\, museums and to develop courses and programs focusing on the experiences of civilians\, soldiers and slaves during the mid-Nineteenth Century. He has published and edited several works and articles. DESCRIPTION:Proclaim America’s Independence with us on July 4\, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. with activities and programs. \nAs essayist John Burroughs stated “That which distinguishes this day from all others is that then both orators and artillerymen shoot blank cartridges.” In the spirit of Burroughs’ quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include a patriotic ceremony with the pledge of allegiance and a cannon fire salute. \nFamilies are invited to participate in 19th century games such as a sack race and 3-legged race among others to be held on the picturesque Tudor Hall lawn. A period baseball game will also be held at the Battlefield Center Field where guests are invited to join in the game. \nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A mere seven days later\, the surrender at Appomattox helped to secure the Union and began healing a nation. \nVisitors will see that some inspirations remain the same as Thomas Jefferson observed in his quote\, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness.” \nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

SUMMARY:Joshua L. Chamberlain: Scholar-Warrior Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This limited time exhibit explores the life of the Civil War General and former Governor of Maine from birth to his death at age eighty-five. Artifacts\, artwork and documents tell Chamberlain’s story of his formative years through his rise into today’s pop culture. \nThe exhibit opening date of June 18 coincides with the severe wounding of Chamberlain during the Second Battle of Petersburg in 1864. This wound would be the cause of his death fifty years later in 1914 making him the last Civil War veteran to die of his wounds. \nJoshua L. Chamberlain was born in Brewer\, Maine as the oldest of five children. His parents wanted him to become a clergyman or join the military. Chamberlain instead sought academic pursuits and attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick\, Maine where he studied Ancient Greek and Latin\, graduating in 1852. Three years later he returned to Bowdoin as a professor of rhetoric and soon made use of his fluency in nine languages by being appointed Professor of Modern Languages in 1861. \nChamberlain left his teaching pursuits after the Civil War began and was appointed lieutenant colonel the famous 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His younger brother Thomas Chamberlain would also serve as an officer in the same regiment. Joshua Chamberlain’s actions at Gettysburg would later result in being awarded the Medal of Honor. There he saved the Union left flank at Little Round Top with a bayonet charge made famous by the book Killer Angels and the 1993 movie Gettysburg where he is portrayed by actor Jeff Daniels. This would also be the cause of Chamberlain rising into the nationally known pop culture of today. \nHe received two minor wounds at Gettysburg prior to his severe wounding at the Second Battle of Petersburg on June 18\, 1864 which led Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant to promote Chamberlain to brigadier general. Once recovered\, he returned to duty in the spring of 1865 for the Battle of Lewis’s Farm where Chamberlain was nearly captured and wounded again. He survived and went on to preside over the parade of the Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 12\, 1865. \nChamberlain’s post-war life saw him return to Maine on a tide of popularity and serving four one-year terms as Governor. He also returned to Bowdoin College now as it’s president until retiring from ill health. There were additional pursuits in law and business but\, his old wound from Petersburg plagued him for the remainder of his life. Six surgeries failed to ease his condition and Chamberlain died in Portland\, Maine in 1914. One of the same two surgeons who fifty years earlier\, had tended to his wounds at Petersburg was by his side. \nThe special exhibit runs through November 29\, 2020 and is included with regular daily admission during normal operating hours.

The tour will begin at the historic Hart Farm which survived the battle and has been restored to its wartime appearance. \nAfter a brief overview of the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns\, guests will then embark on a tour of the battlefield to explore the original terrain features while incorporating the history that unfolded on this National Landmark site resulting in the collapse of Petersburg defenses and the withdrawal of Confederate forces from Richmond. Seven days later after a running fight out to Appomattox Courthouse\, the war would be over on April 9\, 1865. \nPristine earthworks\, rifle pits\, artillery redans and the picturesque Large and Small Meadows are included in this walking tour. The tour will begin at the Jones Farm parking area (near intersection of Hofheimer Way and Church Road) at 5:30 a.m. and follow the route of the Army of the Potomac’s VI Corps assault to the Confederate earthworks defended by Brig. Gen. James Lane’s North Carolina Confederates. \nThis tour starts at 6506 Church Road\, Petersburg\, Virginia 23803 and will last 2 hours and will require roughly 1.5 miles of walking over occasionally uneven terrain. The tour is free and open to the public\, however\, donations for continued preservation efforts are appreciated.

She has lectured nationally on the topics of genealogy and slavery.\n\nBelsches researches and chronicles the experiences of African-Americans in the Richmond region of Virginia . She has authored several titles for the “African American National Biography” (Oxford University Press) and is the author of “Black America Series: Richmond\, Virginia.”\n\nAdditionally\, Belsches is a documentary film maker who served as a researcher\, scholarly advisor and cast member for the PBS documentary\, “The Hail Storm: John Dabney in Virginia.” The documentary tells the story of African-American 19th-century Richmond caterer John Dabney. She also had the distinction for serving as a researcher for Steven Spielberg’s movie “Lincoln.”\n\nThis event is open to the public and included with the Park’s regular daily admission fee.

Attendees will also enjoy what author Richard Paul Evans stated as; “The smells of Christmas are the smells of childhood.” with great tea and treats to evoke memories of the past.\n\nTake this opportunity to experience the holidays with family or friends as C. S. Lewis advised that “Christmas is best pondered\, not with logic\, but with imagination.” Attendees are invited to explore the Park after the event and immerse themselves in our rich national heritage.\n\nThe Park’s Tea & Tidings will only be offered one afternoon and space is limited. SUMMARY:A Christmas Past
DESCRIPTION:Experience the holidays in 19th century style. Families will enjoy the opportunity for children to meet a ‘Thomas Nast’ Santa Claus including photo opportunities and the chance to enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. Thomas Nast is considered to be the “Father of the American Cartoon” and among his most notable works is his creation of the modern version of Santa Claus. \nChildren will have the opportunity to participate in a craft making activity where the finished holiday craft can be taken home or presented as a gift to a friend. Guests are invited to sign a holiday card for mailing to active duty soldiers serving abroad away from home and family for the holidays. \nEveryone can step into the past with holiday trimmings and décor as the historic Tudor Hall is transformed into a mid-1800’s home for the holidays. Costumed interpreters will provide holiday specific programming throughout the day for this full immersion experience. As former U.S. President Calvin Coolidge said\, “Christmas is not a time nor a season\, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill\, to be plenteous in mercy\, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” \nSoldiers throughout time spent some holidays away from friends and family and Civil War soldiers did as well. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how soldiers decorated their quarters for the holidays and celebrated Christmas in the field while on campaign. Costumed interpreters will portray these soldiers and bring this special experience to life. \nAll activities are included with regular park admission and children ages 5 and under receive free admission.

SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Stephen Davis who currently serves as the Book Review editor  for the Civil War News. His presentation is titled\, “Hood’s Flank Attack at Atlanta\, July 22\, 1864: Why Jackson’s Flank Attack at Chancellorsville Succeeded\, and Hood’s Did Not.” \nSteve has been a Civil War buff since the 4th grade. He attended Emory University\, and studied under the renowned Civil War historian Bell Wiley. After a Master’s degree in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, he taught high school for a few years\, then earned his Ph.D. at Emory\, where he concentrated on the theme of the Civil War in Southern literature. \nHe served as Book Review Editor for Blue & Gray Magazine from 1984 to 2005\, and is the author of more than a hundred articles in such scholarly and popular publications as Civil War Times Illustrated and the Georgia Historical Quarterly. \nSteve is the author of several books on the Atlanta Campaign: Atlanta Will Fall: Sherman\, John Johnston and the Heavy Yankee Battalions\, and What the Yankees Did to Us: Sherman’s Bombardment and Wrecking of Atlanta. In May 2016 Savas Beatie published his paperback\, A Long and Bloody Task: The Atlanta Campaign from Dalton through Kennesaw Mountain to the Chattahoochee\, May 5-July 18\, 1864. His companion volume is being released this spring: All the Fighting They Want: The Atlanta Campaign from Peach Tree Creek to the Surrender of the City\, July 18-September 2\, 1864. \nDr. Davis is also a talking head. In 2015 he served as a speaker and consultant for the television documentary\, “When Georgia Howled: Sherman on the March\,” a joint production of the Atlanta History Center and Georgia Public Broadcasting. \nSteve is also a popular speaker to Civil War Round Tables and historical societies around the country. His favorite event was when he was invited to speak to the annual meeting of the American Civil War Round Table (UK) in London. His talks around the country have sometimes been filmed and broadcast on C-SPAN. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month (except June\, July\, and August) at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. Annual membership is $40.00. Individuals who are already members of Pamplin Historical Park can become members of PCWRT for $20.00. Non-members can attend for $5.00 each meeting. DESCRIPTION:Join Pamplin Historical Park this December 3\, 2019 for #GivingTuesday as we celebrate by accepting donations to support the A. Wilson Greene Scholarship Fund which provides funding for schools struggling with field trip transportation costs. Help us reach our goal of $10\,000 to help fund the cost of motor coach rentals for under-funded schools. \n#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals\, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday\, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on December 3rd and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back. \nThe A. Wilson Greene Scholarship Fund (AWGSF) is a grant program that assists schools and other tour groups with financial support for transportation costs to attend field trips at Pamplin Historical Park. Pamplin Historical Park is aware that student groups are often prevented from scheduling field trips due to the cost of providing transportation. The AWGSF is designed to help defray the cost of transportation so that more students and other tour groups are able to experience the extraordinary programming offered at Pamplin Historical Park. \nFounded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y – a community and cultural center in New York City − #GivingTuesday inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. SUMMARY:Toys for Tots Collection
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park is proud to be a collection point for Toys for Tots from November 25 through December 13\, 2019. Park admission is not required to drop off a gift. \nVisitors are invited to bring a new unwrapped gift during this time to the Park for distribution to under-privileged children whose parents cannot afford to buy gifts for Christmas. This coincides with the mission of the Toys for Tots program which “is to collect new\, unwrapped toys during October\, November and December each year\, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.” \nThe stated goal is to “deliver\, through a new toy at Christmas\, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible\, productive\, and patriotic citizens.” \nThe Toys for Tots program was founded in 1947 and is operated by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. As of 2016\, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed more than 512 million toys.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:As former U.S. President Ronald Reagan stated “We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give\, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty\, though it never was. Most of all\, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.” In the spirit of Reagan’s quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations on Medal of Honor recipients\, a comparison of Civil War and U.S. World War II soldiers\, a performance of soldier’s songs from the Civil War and a ceremony with cannon fire salute. \nPark Director of Education\, Tim Talbott will present a talk at 11:15 am on Medal of Honor recipients from the Breakthrough Battle which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The most notable of these was Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. \n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon with a presentation of colors by the Virginia State University ROTC Color Guard followed by a cannon fire salute. Afterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a World War II G.I. living-history demonstration where historical comparisons will be made between the soldiers of both wars. Visitors will see that some elements remain the same and many different as General George S. Patton observed in his quote\, “If everyone is thinking alike\, someone isn’t thinking.”\n\n\nFamilies are also invited to join in soldier’s songs at 2:45 pm from the Civil War with a live performance by the Haversacks and Hardtack String Band. Everyone will enjoy traditional songs of home such as “Just Before the Battle Mother” and more lighthearted songs like “Goober Peas.”\n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary display of World War II artifacts will also be available for viewing in the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This Halloween have a hauntingly good time while enjoying great tea and treats. Learn about the historical importance of 19th century Victorian mourning traditions\, and mourning attire while enjoying fall themed refreshments. Hear about some of the many terrifying urban legends from the Victorian era. Many of these legends were loosely based in fact and then propelled into a contentiousness of fear. \nTake this opportunity to experience what Edgar Allan Poe described as\, “The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends\, and where the other begins?” from his work “The Premature Burial”. \nThe Park’s Halloween Tea will only be offered one afternoon and space is limited. Due to the popularity of the tea programs\, reservations and prepayment are required. RSVP on Eventbrite by October 24th.
