SUMMARY:Independence Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:As essayist John Burroughs stated “That which distinguishes this day from all others is that then both orators and artillerymen shoot blank cartridges.” In the spirit of Burroughs’ quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations of 1856 Independence Day campaign speeches and a ceremony with a cannon fire salute.\n\nFamilies are invited to participate in 19th century games such as a sack race and 3-legged race among others to be held on the picturesque Tudor Hall lawn. A period baseball game will also be held at the Battlefield Center Field where guests are invited to join in the game. \n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond.\n\nCivil War programming will be joined by an American Revolutionary War living-history demonstration where historical comparisons will be made between the soldiers of both wars. SUMMARY:Veterans Day Observance & World War I Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is observing this Veterans Day with an observance ceremony and additional activities on November 11\, 2018. This year marks the centennial of the conclusion and armistice of World War I fought 1914-1918. Over 4.7 million Americans served in “the war to end all wars” and approximately 63\,000 did not return home. A further 200\,000 were wounded bearing emotional and physical scars for the remainder of their lives. This Veterans Day\, the park will honor the service of all service members who have fought in defense of America and liberty from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. \nA remembrance ceremony will start at 10:45 a.m. with a presentation of colors by the Virginia State University ROTC Color Guard followed by a Ringing of Bell Service and artillery salute. This will be followed by a living-history demonstration where park visitors can interact with World War I Doughboys and learn more about the American soldier in the “Great War”. A walking tour led by park staff will explore the parallels between the original Civil War earthworks at the park and the trench fighting that took place in World War I. Inside the park’s Education Center United States Army National Guard Historian Alexander Barnes will afterwards present a talk titled “Virginia’s Preparation and Participation in World War I” at 2:30 p.m. Activities will conclude with a selection of Civil War soldier’s songs in a musical performance by the Haversacks and Hardtack String Band in The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. Throughout the day a special display of artifacts from World War I will be available for viewing in the museum. \nAll activities and the ceremony are included with regular park admission to the general public and free to active duty service members and veterans.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 22nd Annual Civil War Symposium: First Ladies of the Civil War on October 19-21\, 2018. This year’s symposium features a first ever all-female award-winning speaker panel of leading Civil War historians from across the country. \nSymposium topics vary from “Sherman’s March to the Sea” to “The Colors of Courage: Gettysburg’s Forgotten History Immigrants\, Women\, and African Americans in the Civil War’s Defining Battle”. The speakers are; Dr. Anne Sarah Rubin of University of Maryland\, Dr. Jennifer Murray of University of Virginia at Wise\, Dr. Lesley J. Gordon of University of Alabama\, Dr. Margaret Creighton of Bates College\, Maine\, Dr. Catherine Clinton of University of Texas at San Antonio\, Dr. Barbara Gannon of University of Central Florida and Diane Monroe Smith. All of these esteemed speakers have been recognized in the field of Civil War history with awards ranging from the Lincoln Prize to the Wiley-Silver Prize for Civil War publications. \nThe Symposium begins on Friday night with a reception at the Park where attendees and speakers can meet and enjoy refreshments. Saturday is filled with lectures and opportunities to purchase published works by the speakers for autographs and participation in a silent auction. Both museums feature amazing displays and one of a kind artifacts like those belonging to General U. S. Grant and the story of Medal of Honor recipient Dr. Mary Walker and others. \n“Since 1957 the Quartermaster Museum has preserved the history and heritage of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps\, the Army’s oldest logistic branch. For more than two centuries Quartermaster soldiers have fed\, clothed and equipped the United States Army.” – U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum \n“The U.S. Army Women’s Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to Army women. The Museum honors women’s contributions to the Army from the Revolutionary War to the present\, telling their stories with interactive exhibits and videos throughout the gallery\, as well as film presentations in our theater. DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier will offer a full schedule of daily programs on Memorial Day\, Monday May 28. The Park will open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and activities are included with regular museum admission and food vendors Good Doggies Hot Dogs and Hau Lani Hawaiian Shave Ice will be selling treats from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This will also be the first day of one dollar general admission at the Park. \nA special Memorial Day program will begin at 12:30 p.m. During this program\, visitors will learn about a number of specific soldiers and their personal experiences during the Civil War. These “It is with Sorrow that I Write” stories will be presented using source material taken from their own letters. Their stories illustrate the causes and consequences of the Civil War. The program will include an artillery firing followed by the presentation of the colors and a playing of Taps. \nA Breakthrough Battlefield Tour will give visitors a chance to learn about the events of April 2\, 1865 which is followed by bugle calls and a Civil War camp life demonstration. Kennedy said\, “We celebrate the past to awaken the future.” Park staff will share information on volunteer opportunities at the Park and hold on-site interviews on Saturday\, Feb. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, Sunday\, Feb. 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Thursday\, Feb. 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday\, Feb. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier\, located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. \nThese volunteer recruitment open houses are held in preparation for the busy spring field trip and travel season. Volunteers are vital in assisting Park staff with visitor needs\, especially during the busy school season. \nVolunteers may assist in a variety of areas that focus on the Park’s goal to help preserve history and promote education.
