SUMMARY:Medal of Honor Day Observance
DESCRIPTION:The celebration will include a documentary film\, which will explain the origins of the Medal of Honor\, and it’s inception during the American Civil War. A special display on the Medal of Honor will illustrate the evolution of this medal and the changes in it’s requirements over time. \nA special display of multiple Medals of Honor will show the changes in designs and the medals for each branch of service being the: U.S. Air Force\, U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy throughout the day. One of the medals displayed was awarded to U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Louis Cukela. Cukela is one of only 19 two-time Medal of Honor recipients who received both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy Medal of Honor for his actions in World War I during the Battle of Belleau Woods in France. \nAdditionally\, a special Breakthrough Battlefield tour will be held at the Park’s Battlefield Center. There\, visitors will begin the tour by seeing artifacts from two Medal of Honor recipients\, Captain Charles Gould of the 5th Vermont Infantry and Sergeant John Ezra Buffington\, 6th Maryland Infantry. Buffington’s own Medal of Honor is among the artifacts to be viewed. Tour attendees will then tour the Breakthrough Battlefield with the Park’s Senior Interpretive Ranger\, Jim Partain who will share the stories of both men at the actual citation locations along with other Petersburg Campaign Medal of Honor recipients. \nThe Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest award for military valor in action. In over 150 years since it’s inception\, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to just 3\,535 and only 65 are living recipients today. The standards to award the Medal itself have changed since the Civil War and\, over time the design has also changed several times. Although some changes have taken place over the years\, the Medal has always embraced the values of bravery\, courage\, sacrifice and integrity.

DESCRIPTION:Costumed guides portraying “agents of death” will lead participants by candlelight on a spine-chilling tour through the historic park and Breakthrough Battlefield. At each stop\, guests will encounter civilians and soldiers who worked\, fought and died at the historic site or in the local area. These and other ghouls will recount their stories and share some of the more macabre and spirit-filled folklore from the past. \nTours will be accompanied by sights and sounds that heighten the senses while breaking the silence of the night. Based on true figures folklore and stories of the Civil War era\, the naturally haunting atmosphere of Pamplin Historical Park gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Park and battlefield after dark. “Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.” – Edgar Allen Poe. Wilson and August Kautz\, whose objective was to cut railroads between Lynchburg\, Virginia\, and the essential Confederate rail supply center at Petersburg\, Virginia. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we remember the 159th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle which ended the Petersburg Campaign and forced the Confederate withdrawal from Richmond.  \nAt 4:40 a.m. April 2\, 1865\, some 14\,000 Union soldiers moved forward in the chilly gloom toward the Confederate fortifications six miles southwest of Petersburg. Less than an hour later\, the American flag flew over the Confederate line following one of the most important battles of the entire Civil War. This engagement led directly to the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. One week later\, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House and our nation began the long process of reconciliation. \nThe Park is hosting a full schedule of activities and programs open to walk-in visitors. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear author presentations\, living history portraying soldiers and civilians\, and artillery demonstrations. Visitors can experience encounters all day with civilians at Tudor Hall and sharpshooters and skirmishers on the Breakthrough Battlefield with reenactors. Additional programming includes a guided walking tour “between the lines” of the Breakthrough Battlefield to discover the role of soldiers in the picket lines and interact with reenactors along the way. An additional battlefield tour titled “The Norfolk Light Artillery Blues” will guide visitors to the actual redan manned by the Norfolk Light Artillery during the April 2\, 1865 Breakthrough Battle. There\, visitors will hear about the role of artillery\, the different types of ammunition used\, and will see a live firing of the two-gun section. \nAuthors Hampton Newsome will present “Gettysburg’s Southern Front” and Michael C. Hardy will present “General Lee’s Immortals\, the Branch-Lane Brigade\,” which is included with regular admission. \nHampton Newsome is author of several books on the Civil War including Richmond Must Fall: The Richmond-Petersburg Campaign\, October 1864\, published by Kent State University Press in 2012 and recognized as a best book of the year by the Civil War Monitor magazine; and The Fight for the Old North State: The Civil War in North Carolina\, January-May 1864\, which was published in 2019 by the University Press of Kansas and received the Emerging Civil War Book Award and the Richard Barksdale Harwell Award from the Atlanta Civil War Roundtable. His most recent title is Gettysburg’s Southern Front: Opportunity and Failure at Richmond. Also published by University of Kansas Press\, this new book has received the Edwin C. Bearss Book Award for Outstanding Scholarship from the Chicago Civil War Roundtable as well as the Emerging Civil War 2023 Book of the Year. \nMichael C. Hardy is an award-winning and widely published author. A graduate of the University of Alabama\, he has written on a large array of subjects — Confederate regimentals\, Southern places\, and personalities — in books\, articles\, and blog posts. In 2010\, Hardy was named North Carolina Historian of the Year by the North Carolina Society of Historians. He was also awarded the James I. Robertson Literary Prize by the Robert E. Lee Civil War Library and Research Center in 2018 for his history of the Branch-Lane Brigade\, General Lee’s Immortals (Savas Beatie\, 2018). When not researching\, writing\, and traveling\, he volunteers at historic sites\, sharing his love for history. \nThese programs are included with Park general admission. The American Civil War is no different with many examples of rivers\, streams and ravines playing a role in defining battles. Some already had bridges in place such as the Burnside Bridge at Antietam and other bridges had to be constructed as in the case of the pontoon bridge across the James River. Many of these bridges played a vital role in the battles surrounding them and others were a silent witness to the carnage and fighting between opposing forces. SUMMARY:Medal of Honor Day
DESCRIPTION:The celebration will begin with a documentary film\, which will explain the origins of the Medal of Honor\, and it’s inception during the American Civil War. Guest speaker Eury J. Cantillo is the Curator of Science and Technology at the U.S. Army Ordnance TSF at Fort Lee\, Virginia and at 1:00 p.m. he will offer visitors a presentation on the history and evolution of the actual Medal of Honor and the changes in recipient requirements over time. A special display of multiple Medals of Honor will show the changes in designs and the medals for each branch of service being the: U.S. Air Force\, U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy throughout the day. One of the medals displayed was awarded to U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Louis Cukela. Cukela is one of only 19 two-time Medal of Honor recipients who received both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy Medal of Honor for his actions in World War I during the Battle of Belleau Woods in France. \nAfterwards\, a special Breakthrough Battlefield tour will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Park’s Battlefield Center. There\, visitors will begin the tour by seeing artifacts from two Medal of Honor recipients\, Captain Charles Gould of the 5th Vermont Infantry and Sergeant John Ezra Buffington\, 6th Maryland Infantry. Buffington’s own Medal of Honor is among the artifacts to be viewed. Tour attendees will then tour the Breakthrough Battlefield with the Park’s Senior Interpretive Ranger\, Jim Partain who will share the stories of both men at the actual citation locations along with other Petersburg Campaign Medal of Honor recipients. \nThe Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest award for military valor in action. In over 150 years since it’s inception\, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to just 3\,535 and only 65 are living recipients today. The standards to award the Medal itself have changed since the Civil War and\, over time the design has also changed several times. Although some changes have taken place over the years\, the Medal has always embraced the values of bravery\, courage\, sacrifice and integrity. \nEury Cantillo began a museum career shortly after college graduation\, first working as a historic interpreter at Plimoth Plantation\, later sailing a replica of one of Columbus’ ships through the Panama Canal\, and then working as the Outreach Coordinator at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester\, MA. At the height of the war in Iraq\, he decided to enlist in the U.S. Army. Cantillo served as an Artillery Officer in the 3rd Infantry Division\, which included a 15 month deployment to the city of Ramadi in Western Iraq. In addition he lead a variety of supply convoys through the desert\, and finally ended the deployment as a Battery Fire Direction Officer involved in the field testing of the Excalibur GPS guided artillery round. He then used the GI Bill to earn a Master’s degree in education\, and began working for the National Park Service at the Lexington and Concord battlefield\, the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings\, and the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington\, DC. He then worked as the Director of Education for the U. S. Navy’s Submarine Force museum\, moved to U.S. Army Center of Military History as the Curator at the Army’s Aviation museum before becoming the Curator of the Army’s Ordnance Training Support Facility\, the first operational TSF in the system. \nThis special event is supported by the U.S. Army Museums and TSF at Fort Lee\, Virginia and the Virginia War Museum located in Newport News\, Virginia. Strosnider Chevrolet is a proud sponsor of the Medal of Honor Day celebration. \n

SUMMARY:Breakthrough Battle Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we remember the 157th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle which ended the Petersburg Campaign and forced the Confederate withdrawal from Richmond. \nAt 4:40 a.m. April 2\, 1865\, some 14\,000 Union soldiers moved forward in the chilly gloom toward the Confederate fortifications six miles southwest of Petersburg. Less than an hour later\, the American flag flew over the Confederate line following one of the most important battles of the entire Civil War. This engagement led directly to the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. One week later\, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House and our nation began the long process of healing. \nThe Park will hosts a full schedule of activities and programs for walk-in visitors each day. Visitors will have the opportunity to join in a walking tour of the battlefield\, drill with the troops\, see a presentation on period clothing and uniforms\, meet Captain Charles Gould of the 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment (recreated) and more. Author John Selby will also be presenting a discussion on Union General George Meade and his performance during the Petersburg Campaign. Selby will be available afterwards for a book signing of his work “Meade: The Price of Command” and his book will be available for purchase. \nAll programs are included with Park admission. Daily admission for adults is $15\, seniors (65+) and Military w/ID $12.00\, children (6-12) $8\, and children under 6 free.

DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations on artillery “The King of Battle”\, a lecture and living-history demonstration on the Spanish-American War\, a live musical performance of soldier’s songs and a ceremony with cannon fire salute. \n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon with a presentation of colors followed by a cannon fire salute. Afterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a Spanish-American War lecture and living-history demonstration in the park’s Education Center. \n\nPark staff will conduct a guided walking tour at 1:45 p.m. of the Breakthrough Battlefield\, which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The tour will offer attendees a chance to hear about the events which unfolded on that fateful morning while viewing some of the most well-preserved earthworks in the country. A notable story to be shared is that of Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. Gould would later receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle. \n\nFamilies are also invited to join in soldier’s songs with a live performance by the Harken Back String Band. Everyone will enjoy traditional songs of home and military life beginning at 2:30 p.m. \n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 424-acre park to include the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary exhibit titled “We Fight for Our Rights” tells the story of the both the enslaved and free African-Americans who fought for freedom during the American Civil War and their impact on later contributions through the 20th century. The exhibit focuses on the USCT or United States Colored Troops who were formerly enslaved and free African-Americans who joined the Union Army in their fight to end slavery and preserve the Union. \n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

Attendees will follow the route of the Union Army of the Potomac’s VI Corps assault to the Confederate earthworks defended by Brig. Gen. The tour will begin at the historic Hart Farm which survived the battle and has been restored to its wartime appearance. \nAfter a brief overview of the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns\, guests will then embark on a tour of the battlefield to explore the original terrain features while incorporating the history that unfolded on this National Landmark site resulting in the collapse of Petersburg defenses and the withdrawal of Confederate forces from Richmond. Seven days later after a running fight out to Appomattox Courthouse\, the war would be over on April 9\, 1865. \nPristine earthworks\, rifle pits\, artillery redans and the picturesque Large and Small Meadows are included in this walking tour. The tour will begin at the Jones Farm parking area (near intersection of Hofheimer Way and Church Road) at 5:30 a.m. and follow the route of the Army of the Potomac’s VI Corps assault to the Confederate earthworks defended by Brig. Gen. James Lane’s North Carolina Confederates. \nThis tour starts at 6506 Church Road\, Petersburg\, Virginia 23803 and will last 2 hours and will require roughly 1.5 miles of walking over occasionally uneven terrain. The tour is free and open to the public\, however\, donations for continued preservation efforts are appreciated.

DESCRIPTION:The Park’s education staff is offering a special field trip program on for home school families and associations. Home School Tours at Pamplin Historical Park include educational programs that use fun\, participatory learning techniques to teach historical lessons about life in the nineteenth century. \nEach Home School Tour includes a visit to the award-winning exhibit Duty Called Me Here and two hands-on programs\, Plantation Life\, and A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, led by Pamplin Historical Park educators. These programs are individually designed for children from third to twelfth grade. \nDuty Called Me Here brings visitors face-to-face with the experiences of the nearly three million Americans who became soldiers during the Civil War. Personal audio players enable students to follow the true story of a “soldier comrade.” In Plantation Life\, students study how free and enslaved Virginia families lived 150 years ago and how that lifestyle changed during the Civil War. In A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, students participate in military drills\, observe weapons demonstrations\, and visit the Park’s recreated Military Encampment\, where they experience elements of a soldier’s life. \nTour times are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tours cost $9.50 for children grades K-12 and $11.00 for adults. (Rain or shine). Reservations and a non-refundable prepayment by credit card or check are required. Participants will need to bring their own brown bag lunch. SUMMARY:From Forests to Fields
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the mid-19th century efforts to use wood in civilian products and military construction on July 20-21\, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.\n\nPrograms will include several 30-minute woodworking demonstrations at both the Tudor Hall Plantation and the Military Encampment areas. These programs will occur multiple times daily\, so that visitors will have several opportunities to view them regardless of when they arrive.\n\nStaff in period attire at Tudor Hall will demonstrate woodworking skills and the required tools used in the production of common items of the era. Visitors are invited to join in on discussions to include period methods of selecting\, cutting and marketing wood products.\n\nVisitors can also join Civil War soldiers at the nearby Military Encampment as they demonstrate the construction of earthworks\, revetments and other obstacles. Several finished examples will be on hand and guests are encouraged to to help weave gabion baskets used in earthwork construction. Discussions will include how soldiers used every part of the tree for different purposes from firewood to building fabrication.\n\nA specially tailored Tudor Hall Plantation walking tour titled “From Forests to Fields” will be offered at 11:00-11:45 am\, and again from 2:00-2:45 pm. The Tudor Hall walking tour this particular day will focus on and incorporate the necessary removal of timber to create the fields where cash crops grew. Particular attention will be paid to explaining the different types of wooden structures commonly found on Southside Virginia plantations and their various methods of construction. Opportunities for comparing and contrasting the master’s\, and the enslaved (both domestic and field slaves) living quarters as well as their role in the deforestation and construction processes will also be covered. Enslaved people\, from field hand to skilled slaves (carpenters\, joiners\, and coopers) worked with and made products fashioned from wood virtually every day of their lives.\n\nWe will also offer the Breakthrough Battlefield Tour twice during the day\, from 1:00-1:45 pm\, and again from 3:00-3:45 pm. Additional emphasis will be placed on comparing and contrasting today’s battlefield landscape to that of period photographs that vividly illustrate the denuded terrain. Guides will also stress how soldiers constructed earthworks using local timber during the Petersburg Campaign. Tour discussions will also include sharing quotes from soldiers on both sides who described their use of timber and their thoughts on the denuded landscape during the Petersburg Campaign.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.
