DESCRIPTION:This special guided tour will visit sites from the Wilson-Kautz Raid with Director of Education & Interpretation\, Zachary Pittard. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Call (804) 861-2408 for reservations today. \nThe Wilson–Kautz Raid was led by Union cavalry under Brigadier Generals James H. Wilson and August Kautz\, whose objective was to cut railroads between Lynchburg\, Virginia\, and the essential Confederate rail supply center at Petersburg\, Virginia. While the raid disrupted Confederate rail communications temporarily\, the raiding force suffered high casualties and loss of artillery\, their supply train and many raiders were captured\, making this a partial Union failure. \nThe tour will leave from the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Historical Park promptly at 8:00 a.m. and return by 5:00 p.m. Stops will include the Schwartz Tavern\, GroveBattlefield\, Staunton River Bridge\, Sappony Church\, Reams Station and others along the way. DESCRIPTION:Battlefield terrain features and obstacles have been studied by numerous historians and are the blessing or curse of many military commanders throughout time. The American Civil War is no different with many examples of rivers\, streams and ravines playing a role in defining battles. Some already had bridges in place such as the Burnside Bridge at Antietam and other bridges had to be constructed as in the case of the pontoon bridge across the James River. Many of these bridges played a vital role in the battles surrounding them and others were a silent witness to the carnage and fighting between opposing forces. DESCRIPTION:Join historians for a special tour in conjunction with our 22nd Annual Civil War Symposium on October 19\, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nPamplin Historical Park Executive Director\, Jerry “Dez” Desmond will begin the tour at the Park and then lead tour attendees on an experience as the hidden treasures at Fort Lee are revealed from amazing museums to historic World War I trenches. \nThe tour features two world class museums including the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum and the U.S. Army Women’s Museum. Both museums feature amazing displays and one of a kind artifacts like those belonging to General U. S. Grant and the story of Medal of Honor recipient Dr. Mary Walker and others. \n“Since 1957 the Quartermaster Museum has preserved the history and heritage of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps\, the Army’s oldest logistic branch. For more than two centuries Quartermaster soldiers have fed\, clothed and equipped the United States Army.” – U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum \n“The U.S. Army Women’s Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to Army women. The Museum honors women’s contributions to the Army from the Revolutionary War to the present\, telling their stories with interactive exhibits and videos throughout the gallery\, as well as film presentations in our theater. The museum also has an extensive research and learning center\, and memorial garden.” – U.S. Army Women’s Museum \nTour attendees will enjoy a lunch on this active military base in one of the mess halls alongside active duty soldiers. A U.S. Army historian will also guide attendees through the fort’s training trenches that remain from World War I\, while sharing parallels between the Civil War and the Great War.
