SUMMARY:Veterans Day Observance & World War I Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is observing this Veterans Day with an observance ceremony and additional activities on November 11\, 2018. This year marks the centennial of the conclusion and armistice of World War I fought 1914-1918. Over 4.7 million Americans served in “the war to end all wars” and approximately 63\,000 did not return home. A further 200\,000 were wounded bearing emotional and physical scars for the remainder of their lives. This Veterans Day\, the park will honor the service of all service members who have fought in defense of America and liberty from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. \nA remembrance ceremony will start at 10:45 a.m. with a presentation of colors by the Virginia State University ROTC Color Guard followed by a Ringing of Bell Service and artillery salute. This will be followed by a living-history demonstration where park visitors can interact with World War I Doughboys and learn more about the American soldier in the “Great War”. A walking tour led by park staff will explore the parallels between the original Civil War earthworks at the park and the trench fighting that took place in World War I. Inside the park’s Education Center United States Army National Guard Historian Alexander Barnes will afterwards present a talk titled “Virginia’s Preparation and Participation in World War I” at 2:30 p.m. Activities will conclude with a selection of Civil War soldier’s songs in a musical performance by the Haversacks and Hardtack String Band in The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. Throughout the day a special display of artifacts from World War I will be available for viewing in the museum. \nAll activities and the ceremony are included with regular park admission to the general public and free to active duty service members and veterans.

DESCRIPTION:Join us a special Home School field trip program for home school families and associations. Home School Tours at Pamplin Historical Park include educational programs that use fun\, participatory learning techniques to teach historical lessons about life in the nineteenth century. \nEach Home School Tour includes a visit to the award-winning exhibit Duty Called Me Here and two hands-on programs\, Plantation Life\, and A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, led by Pamplin Historical Park Educators. These programs are individually designed for children from third to twelfth grade. \nDuty Called Me Here brings visitors face-to-face with the experiences of the nearly three million Americans who became soldiers during the Civil War. Personal audio players enable students to follow the true story of a “soldier comrade.” In Plantation Life\, students study how free and enslaved Virginia families lived 150 years ago and how that lifestyle changed during the Civil War. In A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, students participate in military drills\, observe weapons demonstrations\, and visit the Park’s recreated Military Encampment\, where they experience elements of a soldier’s life. \nTour times are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tours cost $9.50 for children grades K-12 and $11.00 for adults. SUMMARY:Focus Weekend: Technological Innovations
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is hosting a special weekend event focused on technological innovations both on the battlefield and on the farm during the antebellum era and the Civil War on August 18-19\, 2018. \nIt is said that for every year of warfare\, technology is advanced ten years or more. This is due to additional funding and a total commitment of a nation’s resources and talent toward achieving victory. Advancements that help to win ultimate victory on the battlefield can also change industry and day-to-day life on the home front. \nDaily between 10:30 am and 3:00 pm park visitors will be able to see period demonstrations in the Park’s military encampment area highlighting advancements in military technology from communications including the telegraph\, to evolutions in weaponry from cap and ball to the rim fire cartridge. One example is President Abraham Lincoln who was the first president to communicate\, with his officers and lead real-time strategies and deliver orders using the telegraph. \nFarming also saw new technologies in the mid-19th century\, which made work easier and more productive. The mechanical reaper invented by Cyrus McCormick in 1834 increased food production\, by harvesting crops mechanically and helped to meet the needs of a growing population and exports. Park staff will share these agricultural advancements and the Southern resistance to change\, at the Park’s Tudor Hall Plantation. \nVisitors are also invited to explore the original Breakthrough Battlefield with miles of trails or take a walk through the crop and vegetable gardens at the Field Quarters which include beautiful sun flowers. \nThese special weekend programs and those usually offered daily at the Park are included with regular paid general admission. Individual general admission is $1.00 from now through Labor Day (September 3) 2018 as part of the Park’s $1 Days of Summer.

DESCRIPTION:Daily between 10:30 am and 3:00 pm park visitors will be able to see period demonstrations highlighting military medicine and medical advancements used on and off of the battlefield and learning how pharmaceuticals played a role in prevention and treatment of diseases. \nThe American Civil War saw seven out of every ten soldier fatalities caused by disease rather than battlefield injuries. The lack of cleanliness and sanitation certainly added to the deaths as American poet and Civil War nurse Walt Whitman described one hospital as “quite crowded\, upstairs and down\, everything impromptu\, no system\, all bad enough\, but I have no doubt the best that can be done; all the wounds pretty bad\, some frightful\, the men in their old clothes\, unclean and bloody.” \nDysentery\, typhoid and pneumonia seemed more dangerous than enemy bullets. Those soldiers who were injured in battle typically had to endure amputations\, to remove shattered limbs. Even then\, only about seventy-five percent of them would survive the operations and fevers that followed. In spite of this\, one surgeon defended the volume of amputations by stating\, “I have no hesitation in saying that far more lives were lost from refusal to amputate than by amputation.” \nThis event allows visitors the chance to learn about these struggles of sick and wounded soldiers and about the men and women in medical services who cared for them. \nThese special weekend programs and those usually offered daily at the Park are included with regular paid general admission. DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is offering $1.00 general daily admission throughout the summer from Memorial Day May 28 through Labor Day September 3\, 2018. This drastically reduced admission rate will allow all people an opportunity to access this amazing facility and share in our national heritage from the Antebellum period\, including the institution of slavery\, through the Civil War. $1 admission has been made possible in part by The Bank of Southside Virginia and through private donations. \nThe Park strives to share the stories of civilians\, enslaved and common soldiers with all people as their stories are now part of the American experience\, which belongs to all Americans. All summer long\, visitors can share in the experiences in the museums\, at four historic homes and in the Park with new devices from Orpheo. These devices provide audio and images on a five inch screen at over 80 locations throughout the 424-acre campus. Additional focus weekends will offer unique historical interpretation programs. \nIn 2017\, the Park experimented by offer a $1 admission weekend which saw an over 1000% increase in attendance and engaged members of the local and regional communities who had never visited the Park. This served to break down economic and cultural barriers by allowing guests from all walks of life and backgrounds to explore the Park. \nDuring last year’s $1 admission event\, Park Executive Director Jerry Desmond spoke with one family of seven including four children ages 5-12. Desmond states\, “Seeing my name tag\, the father thanked me explaining that he had lived in Dinwiddie County all of this life. For the past 20 years he had driven by the Park every day on his way to work but had never stopped in because the admission price was too high.  On a regular day it would have cost him over $75 to bring his family to the Park…on that day it only cost him $7.” No better example highlights the passion and reasoning behind the reduced summer admission days. \nThe $1 general admission does not apply to group or guided tours\, which are required to book in advance and some special events require additional fees. Kennedy said\, “We celebrate the past to awaken the future.” Park staff will share information on volunteer opportunities at the Park and hold on-site interviews on Saturday\, Feb. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, Sunday\, Feb. 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Thursday\, Feb. 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday\, Feb. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier\, located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. \nThese volunteer recruitment open houses are held in preparation for the busy spring field trip and travel season. Volunteers are vital in assisting Park staff with visitor needs\, especially during the busy school season. \nVolunteers may assist in a variety of areas that focus on the Park’s goal to help preserve history and promote education. DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park and The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is offering fun volunteer opportunities to help preserve history\, and promote education! As John F. Kennedy said\, “We celebrate the past to awaken the future.” Park staff will share information on volunteer opportunities at the Park and hold on-site interviews on Saturday\, Feb. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, Sunday\, Feb. 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Thursday\, Feb. 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday\, Feb. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier\, located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. \nThese volunteer recruitment open houses are held in preparation for the busy spring field trip and travel season. Volunteers are vital in assisting Park staff with visitor needs\, especially during the busy school season. \nVolunteers may assist in a variety of areas that focus on the Park’s goal to help preserve history and promote education. DESCRIPTION:Bring Mom for a special treat the Saturday before Mother’s Day. Hosted by our living history interpreters\, you’ll enjoy an afternoon of gourmet teas and tasty treats while learning 19th-century ladies traditions\, etiquette\, parlor games\, and antebellum society life. Live music and a period fashion show are new additions for attendees to enjoy. \nReservations required. Payment must be made in advance\, $20 for Park Members and $24 for non-members.  Seatings at 10:00am and 2:00pm.  Space is limited.
