SUMMARY:Independence Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Independence Celebration as Pamplin Historical Park will offer multiple activities and programs throughout the day. \nFamilies will enjoy the chance to meet and hear a presentation from founding father\, the Marquis de Lafayette portrayed by actor and historian Charles Wissinger. He will share the story and passion of this young émigré from France who fought in the American Revolution and returned to America for a farewell tour in 1824. Mr. Wissinger is a professional actor with a BA in Theatrical and Performing Arts\, and his experience spans stage\, film\, television\, and commercials including appearances on the American Heroes Channel\, the Military Channel\, and the History Channel as well as historical sites\, national parks\, and special events. Wissinger combines his talent for acting with his love of history in this research and interpretation of historical figures. \nAdditional programming includes\, living historians portraying American Revolutionary War militia soldiers who will share why they fought and explain the equipment and life of the men during the War for Independence. Park Ranger Aaron Stoyack will present “Dinwiddie County in the American Revolution” where he will highlight the personalities\, places and events which played a role in the road to revolution through ultimate independence. Live patriotic music will be performed by the Harken Back String Band and families will have the opportunity participate in period games. \nDinwiddie County\, Virginia is home to a great amount of American history to include that of the American Revolutionary War. Dinwiddie County residents formed a Committee of Correspondence and more than 500 militiamen were raised in Dinwiddie County. Many of these men went on to serve in Virginia state and Continental army formations throughout the war. Others such as merchants\, supported the army through supplying food and materials or played other vitally important roles in the fight for independence. \nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission. This event is sponsored by the Bank of Southside Virginia. \nThis event is a part of the VA250 celebrations taking place across Virginia\, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War for independence. Established in 2020 to commemorate Virginia’s role in the 250th anniversary of American independence\, the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250) aims to form a more perfect union by educating Virginians about their history and civic duty and sharing diverse narratives that capture Virginia’s complete story and role in shaping the nation. \nThis event is sponsored by the Bank of Southside Virginia.

SUMMARY:159th Breakthrough Battle Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we remember the 159th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle which ended the Petersburg Campaign and forced the Confederate withdrawal from Richmond.  \nAt 4:40 a.m. April 2\, 1865\, some 14\,000 Union soldiers moved forward in the chilly gloom toward the Confederate fortifications six miles southwest of Petersburg. Less than an hour later\, the American flag flew over the Confederate line following one of the most important battles of the entire Civil War. This engagement led directly to the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. One week later\, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House and our nation began the long process of reconciliation. \nThe Park is hosting a full schedule of activities and programs open to walk-in visitors. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear author presentations\, living history portraying soldiers and civilians\, and artillery demonstrations. Visitors can experience encounters all day with civilians at Tudor Hall and sharpshooters and skirmishers on the Breakthrough Battlefield with reenactors. Additional programming includes a guided walking tour “between the lines” of the Breakthrough Battlefield to discover the role of soldiers in the picket lines and interact with reenactors along the way. An additional battlefield tour titled “The Norfolk Light Artillery Blues” will guide visitors to the actual redan manned by the Norfolk Light Artillery during the April 2\, 1865 Breakthrough Battle. There\, visitors will hear about the role of artillery\, the different types of ammunition used\, and will see a live firing of the two-gun section. \nAuthors Hampton Newsome will present “Gettysburg’s Southern Front” and Michael C. Hardy will present “General Lee’s Immortals\, the Branch-Lane Brigade\,” which is included with regular admission. \nHampton Newsome is author of several books on the Civil War including Richmond Must Fall: The Richmond-Petersburg Campaign\, October 1864\, published by Kent State University Press in 2012 and recognized as a best book of the year by the Civil War Monitor magazine; and The Fight for the Old North State: The Civil War in North Carolina\, January-May 1864\, which was published in 2019 by the University Press of Kansas and received the Emerging Civil War Book Award and the Richard Barksdale Harwell Award from the Atlanta Civil War Roundtable. His most recent title is Gettysburg’s Southern Front: Opportunity and Failure at Richmond. Also published by University of Kansas Press\, this new book has received the Edwin C. Bearss Book Award for Outstanding Scholarship from the Chicago Civil War Roundtable as well as the Emerging Civil War 2023 Book of the Year. \nMichael C. Hardy is an award-winning and widely published author. A graduate of the University of Alabama\, he has written on a large array of subjects — Confederate regimentals\, Southern places\, and personalities — in books\, articles\, and blog posts. In 2010\, Hardy was named North Carolina Historian of the Year by the North Carolina Society of Historians. He was also awarded the James I. Robertson Literary Prize by the Robert E. Lee Civil War Library and Research Center in 2018 for his history of the Branch-Lane Brigade\, General Lee’s Immortals (Savas Beatie\, 2018). When not researching\, writing\, and traveling\, he volunteers at historic sites\, sharing his love for history. \nThese programs are included with Park general admission. DESCRIPTION:Costumed guides will lead participants on a special Halloween tour\, where they will encounter various historical figures on a real battlefield. Participants will hear ladies recounting scary stories\, music in the night and experience fireside encounters\, soldiers called to an attack a surgery and more. Tours will be accompanied by sights and sounds that heighten the senses while breaking the silence of the night. The naturally haunting atmosphere of Pamplin Historical Park gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Park and battlefield after dark. \nThis event is offered on Friday\, October 27\, and Saturday\, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required to ensure a spot on the tour. SUMMARY:World War II in the Pacific Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting in the Pacific Theater and the home front during World War II. Guests will have the opportunity to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater and about a number of different aspects of a soldier’s life to include weapons\, signals and communications. Impressions will range from U.S. Army and Marines to those of British and Russian allies. Civilian living historians will portray goings on at the home front and USO activities stateside. Demonstrations will include weapons and a 1940’s military uniform and civilian fashion show. \nPartner museums to include; the Hampton Roads Naval Museum\, MacArthur Memorial\, U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum\, U.S. Army Ordnance TSF\, U.S. Army Women’s Museum and the Virginia War Memorial will have displays and more for visitors to see and experience. Presentations by authors and historians will be made on the following subjects; Battle of Midway by Timothy & Laura Orr which includes a book-signing\, Japanese Armor by Eury Cantillo\, Pre-war American-Japanese Relations presentation by James Triesler and The Price of Unpreparedness: American POWs in the Pacific by Corey Thorton. \nLaura Orr is the Director of Education and Military Outreach at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk\, Virginia. Her husband Dr. Timothy Orr is an Associate Professor of History at Old Dominion University. Both co-authored Never Call Me a Hero: A Legendary American Dive-Bomber Pilot Remembers of the Battle of Midway published in 2017 by Harper Collins. The memoir chronicles American dive-bomber pilot Jack “Dusty” Kleiss. Dusty worked on this book for years with naval historians Timothy and Laura Orr\, aiming to publish Never Call Me a Hero for Midway’s seventy-fifth anniversary in June 2017. Sadly\, as the book neared completion in 2016\, Dusty Kleiss passed away at age 100\, one of the last surviving dive-bomber pilots to have fought at Midway. And yet the publication of Never Call Me a Hero is a cause for celebration: these pages are Dusty’s remarkable legacy\, providing a riveting eyewitness account of the Battle of Midway\, and an inspiring testimony to the brave men who fought\, died\, and shaped history during those four extraordinary days in June\, seventy-five years ago. \nEury Cantillo began a museum career shortly after college graduation\, first working as a historic interpreter at Plimoth Plantation\, later sailing a replica of one of Columbus’ ships through the Panama Canal\, and then working as the Outreach Coordinator at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester\, MA. At the height of the war in Iraq\, he decided to enlist in the US Army. Cantillo served as an Artillery Officer in the 3rd Infantry Division\, which included a 15 month deployment to the city of Ramadi in Western Iraq. In addition he lead a variety of supply convoys through the desert\, and finally ended the deployment as a Battery Fire Direction Officer involved in the field testing of the Excalibur GPS guided artillery round. He then used the GI Bill to earn a Master’s degree in education\, and began working for the National Park Service at the Lexington and Concord battlefield\, the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings\, and the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington\, DC. He then worked as the Director of Education for the Navy’s Submarine Force museum\, moved to CMH as the Curator at the Army’s Aviation museum before becoming the Curator of the Army’s Ordnance Training Support Facility\, the first operational TSF in the system. \nJames Triesler is the Director of Education for the Virginia War Memorial located in Richmond\, Virginia. Triesler became a history teacher in 1992\, and has a passion for WWII. He and his students have won numerous awards for their work\, including a Save Our History Award from the History Channel for creating the website ittookawar.com\, a collection of letters and personal accounts from the Second World War. While in the classroom\, Triesler accumulated nearly 8\,000 original WWII letters for his students to learn from and transcribe. He was named the Virginia Battle of the Bulge person of the year in 2012\, and is a former Virginia Region 1 Teacher of the Year. He has presented at several VBOB and BOBA events and loves displaying artifacts for people to enjoy and learn about WWII. Since 2015\, Triesler has been the Director of Education at the Virginia War Memorial\, where he has continued to honor veterans and educate students of all ages. \nJames Corey Thornton has served as Curator for the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk\, Virginia since November 2014. A resident of Norfolk\, Virginia\, Corey has holds both a Bachelor of Arts\, and a Master of Arts in History from Old Dominion University (Norfolk\, VA). As the Memorial’s Curator he manages the artifact collection and plans and develops the Memorial’s special and permanent exhibits. Corey is also responsible for the collections management of over 17\,000 artifacts in the collection\, as well as assisting with organizational planning\, and supervising frontline staff. Prior to his work at the MacArthur Memorial\, Corey served as the Curator of History for the Portsmouth Museums (Portsmouth\, VA)\, from 2007 to 2014. In Portsmouth\, Corey curated exhibits highlighting aspects of Portsmouth’s history\, managed the artifact collection\, and assisted with overseeing the City’s historical markers\, monuments\, and large external artifacts. Corey spends his personal time with his family\, researches various aspects of American history\, and plays his drums (especially after a challenging day at work!). Viewings of the Virginia War Memorials’\, Virginians at War: Battle of Iwo Jima which combines original footage with first-hand accounts to tell stories from the battle will be shown over the weekend in the park’s Education Center. \nChildren will enjoy craft activities to include World War II coloring books and making a take home project of the Roosevelt’s Scottie Dog “Fala.” \nWorld War II\, which was fought between 1939 and 1945\, cost an estimated 85 million casualties both military and civilian worldwide. The United States military casualties amounted to 416\,800. While many were thankful for the surrender in Europe on May 8\, 1945 the war in the Pacific raged on and was far from over. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the first half of the year gave a glimpse of the carnage awaiting invasion forces set to strike the Japanese home islands. A planned Allied invasion on the island of Kyushu was set for November 1st. There 500\,000 Japanese troops were in position and another 6 million were under arms or able to be called into service. This invasion did not come to pass. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Imperial Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The terms were accepted on August 14\, 1945 and a formal document signing ceremony took place aboard the U.S.S. DESCRIPTION:Join us this Independence Day as Pamplin Historical Park will offer multiple programs throughout the day. \nFamilies will enjoy the chance to meet founding father Benjamin Franklin portrayed by actor and historian Barry Stevens. Stevens has been presenting Benjamin Franklin since 2005. His education of Dr. Franklin has led him to read and study extensively on the life and times of this American personality. It has taken him to locations throughout the Colonies known to Dr. Franklin and even to Le Procope restaurant in Paris\, France. Visitors will be invited to engage Dr. Franklin in a conversation and experience interaction with living history. \nAdditional programming includes\, live music performed by the Harken Back String Band and the opportunity for families to participate in period games. Living historians portraying Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers will share why they fought and explain the equipment and life of the men during the War for Independence and the American Civil War. Visitors can also take part in a special ceremony with color guard\, pledge of allegiance and a cannon fire salute. \nAll visitors will have the opportunity to tour the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we remember the 158th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle which ended the Petersburg Campaign and forced the Confederate withdrawal from Richmond. \nThe Park is hosting a full weekend schedule of activities and programs for walk-in visitors. Attendees will have the opportunity to drill with the troops\, see artillery\, medical\, and musical demonstrations. Additional programming focuses on civilians and the home front. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about food shortages and creative recipes during the Civil War. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we honor America’s veterans this Veterans Day on November 11\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with activities and programs throughout the day. Visitors can learn about the advancements in weaponry between the Civil War and World War I at a special weapons demonstration at 11:00 a\,m.\n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon to include a presentation of colors\, cannon fire salute and speech. Families are then invited to join educator and musical soloist Deborah Soderholm. She has combined her two passions of singing and history to bring the music of the past alive. A history teacher and museum educator\, she has also performed on various stages throughout the region doing everything from musical theater and cabarets to opera. She has performed with PCC’s Gilbert and Sullivan operettas\, Opera in Williamsburg\, Williamsburg Players\, Peninsula Community Theater\, Fort Lee Theater Company\, Henricus Historical Park\, and the American Youth Ballet. Deborah has also been heard as a church soloist\, professional Christmas caroler for Merchant’s Square\, acting and singing in programs for Colonial Williamsburg Art Museums and doing the national anthem for sporting events and special ceremonies.   Everyone will enjoy songs of American patriotism and and those from World War I beginning at 1:30 p.m.\n\nAfterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a U.S. Army Depot Brigades in World War I lecture by author and historian Alexander Barnes at 2:45 p.m. Alexander F. Barnes served in the United States Marine Corps and Army National Guard\, retiring as a warrant officer. He is currently the Virginia National Guard Command historian and author of seven books to include the title\, United States Army Depot Brigades in World War I.\n\nPamplin Historical Park Executive Director\, Jerry Desmond will conduct a guided walking tour at 3:30 p.m. of the Breakthrough Battlefield\, which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The tour will offer attendees a chance to hear about the events which unfolded on that fateful morning while viewing some of the most well-preserved earthworks in the country. A notable story to be shared is that of Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. Gould would later receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle.\n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 424-acre park to include the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary exhibit titled “292 Days\, A City at War” can be toured and is open through December 17\, 2022. It presents the civilian side of the war as the City of Petersburg laid under siege for 292 days from June of 1864 to April of 1865. The exhibit is divided into two parts. The first part examines the history of Petersburg and its impressive growth from its founding around 1675 as a trading post known as Peter’s Point to the secession of Virginia from the United States in 1861. Then the war came\, the second part of the exhibit covers the war years from the secession vote to the end of the siege.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Shadows Murder Mystery: Who Killed Sergeant Korper?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this murder mystery as groups will join a Provost investigator as he questions suspects and follows leads to help you discover\, “Who Killed Sergeant Korper?” There’s one body\, two wounds and six suspects who all have a motive and means to have committed murder. The investigation takes place on the historic grounds of Pamplin Historical Park and the characters and settings are based on real historical persons and locations. \nIt is the evening of October 31\, 1864. Tudor Hall\, the plantation of the Boisseau family has been taken over as the headquarters of Brigadier-General Samuel McGowan’s brigade as part of the fortified defenses around Petersburg\, VA. On guard duty this particular night are members of the 13th South Carolina Regiment\, Company C. The 13th has served in many battles and campaigns to include Gettysburg and the Overland Campaign. To this date\, the regiment has been reduced to 244 men. Company C was recruited from Spartanburg\, SC and only 28 men remain out of the original 100 who enlisted. Morale is low and the company will lose one more man this night. Not due to enemy action but\, from a more sinister cause… closer to home. \nEach night at 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm tours will take place and capacity is limited. SUMMARY:World War II in the Pacific
DESCRIPTION:This living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting in the Pacific Theater and the home front during World War II. Guests will have the opportunity to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater and about a number of different aspects of a soldier’s life to include weapons\, signals and communications. Impressions will range from U.S. Army and Marines to those of British and Russian allies. Civilian living historians will portray goings on at the home front and USO activities stateside. Demonstrations will include weapons and a 1940’s military uniform and civilian fashion show. A special display of vintage pre-war cars will take visitors back to this pivotal time in America when the transition from peacetime to war took place. \nPartner museums to include the MacArthur Memorial\, U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum\, U.S. Army Ordnance TSF\, U.S. Army Women’s Museum and the Virginia War Memorial will have displays and more for visitors to see and experience. Presentations by authors and historians will be made on the following subjects: U.S. 11th Airborne Division and the Los Banos Raid by Jeremy C. Holm\, Japanese Armor by Eury Cantillo\, “Freedom and Food:” Civilian Experiences in the Philippine Internment Camps of WWII presentation by Jennifer Cottle and Propaganda Poster Art by Colin Romanick. \nJeremy C. Holm is a renowned expert on and historian for the 11th Airborne Division and is the author of the much-acclaimed book WHEN ANGELS FALL: FROM TOCCOA TO TOKYO\, THE 511TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT IN WORLD WAR II. Jeremy is an experienced speaker and lecturer who has traveled around the world to inspire\, educate and entertain audiences from Fortune 500 companies to small community gatherings. Jeremy also curates the 511th PIR’s online historical museum\, www.511pir.com\, and is laboring to build a similar online education center for the 11th Airborne Division at www.11thairborne.com. Jeremy is also excited to announce that he is currently working to produce a two-part series that will cover the full history of the 11th Airborne Division in World War II. \nEury Cantillo began a museum career shortly after college graduation\, first working as a historic interpreter at Plimoth Plantation\, later sailing a replica of one of Columbus’ ships through the Panama Canal\, and then working as the Outreach Coordinator at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester\, MA. At the height of the war in Iraq\, he decided to enlist in the US Army. Cantillo served as an Artillery Officer in the 3rd Infantry Division\, which included a 15 month deployment to the city of Ramadi in Western Iraq. In addition he lead a variety of supply convoys through the desert\, and finally ended the deployment as a Battery Fire Direction Officer involved in the field testing of the Excalibur GPS guided artillery round. He then used the GI Bill to earn a Master’s degree in education\, and began working for the National Park Service at the Lexington and Concord battlefield\, the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings\, and the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington\, DC. He then worked as the Director of Education for the Navy’s Submarine Force museum\, moved to CMH as the Curator at the Army’s Aviation museum before becoming the Curator of the Army’s Ordnance Training Support Facility\, the first operational TSF in the system. \nJennifer Cottle is a Museum Attendant and Museum Specialist working with the MacArthur Memorial and the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation. Since becoming a staff member she has worked with material in the museum collections to help share the stories of the thousands of Allied civilians interned in the Philippines during WWII with the public through virtual outreach and education programs. Jennifer graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in Anthropology in 2014 and worked in the field of archaeology for several years before joining the staff at the MacArthur Memorial. She is currently pursuing a M.A. in Public History and plans to incorporate the food history of the WWII internment camps into her capstone project. \nColin Romanick is the current Director of Marketing & Development for Pamplin Historical Park and has worked in the museum field for over 20 years in the areas of education\, finance and marketing. He is a graduate of Christopher Newport University where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration. Romanick worked for the City of Newport News\, Historic Services Division for 13 years. During that time he conducted educational programs\, tours and assisted in the acquisition of artifacts for the Virginia War Museum. Romanick is a published author and contributing writer of numerous historical articles for various periodicals. Prior to joining Pamplin Historical Park\, he has worked as an educator for the US Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee and conducted tours at historic Endview Plantation and Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News\, VA. \nViewings of the Virginia War Memorials’\, Virginians at War: Pearl Harbor which combines original footage with first-hand accounts to tell stories from the “day that will live in infamy” will be shown over the weekend in the park’s Education Center. \nChildren will enjoy craft activities to include World War II coloring books and making a take home project of the Roosevelt’s Scottie Dog “Fala.” \nWorld War II\, which was fought between 1939 and 1945\, cost an estimated 85 million casualties both military and civilian worldwide. The United States military casualties amounted to 416\,800. While many were thankful for the surrender in Europe on May 8\, 1945 the war in the Pacific raged on and was far from over. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the first half of the year gave a glimpse of the carnage awaiting invasion forces set to strike the Japanese home islands. A planned Allied invasion on the island of Kyushu was set for November 1st. There 500\,000 Japanese troops were in position and another 6 million were under arms or able to be called into service. This invasion did not come to pass. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Imperial Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The terms were accepted on August 14\, 1945 and a formal document signing ceremony took place aboard the U.S.S. Visitors can also learn about Virginia’s agrarian past as they explore our Tudor Hall Plantation landscape.\n\nAll will have the opportunity to tour the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A mere seven days later\, the surrender at Appomattox helped to secure the Union.\n\nThe original 124th New York Infantry Regiment was a volunteer regiment raised in in the summer of 1862 from Orange County\, New York. They became known as the “The Orange Blossoms” when their Colonel\, Augustus Van Horne Ellis issued the men orange ribbons just prior to the Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863. The ribbon was to remind them of home and to identify them on the battlefield. They fought in every major battle of the war in which the Army of the Potomac was present. Out of an original strength of 1\,000 new recruits\, the regiment only had 138 original men remaining by June 15\, 1865.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

SUMMARY:Breakthrough Battle Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we remember the 157th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle which ended the Petersburg Campaign and forced the Confederate withdrawal from Richmond. \nAt 4:40 a.m. April 2\, 1865\, some 14\,000 Union soldiers moved forward in the chilly gloom toward the Confederate fortifications six miles southwest of Petersburg. Less than an hour later\, the American flag flew over the Confederate line following one of the most important battles of the entire Civil War. This engagement led directly to the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. One week later\, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House and our nation began the long process of healing. \nThe Park will hosts a full schedule of activities and programs for walk-in visitors each day. Visitors will have the opportunity to join in a walking tour of the battlefield\, drill with the troops\, see a presentation on period clothing and uniforms\, meet Captain Charles Gould of the 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment (recreated) and more. Author John Selby will also be presenting a discussion on Union General George Meade and his performance during the Petersburg Campaign. Selby will be available afterwards for a book signing of his work “Meade: The Price of Command” and his book will be available for purchase. \nAll programs are included with Park admission. DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations on artillery “The King of Battle”\, a lecture and living-history demonstration on the Spanish-American War\, a live musical performance of soldier’s songs and a ceremony with cannon fire salute. \n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon with a presentation of colors followed by a cannon fire salute. Afterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a Spanish-American War lecture and living-history demonstration in the park’s Education Center. \n\nPark staff will conduct a guided walking tour at 1:45 p.m. of the Breakthrough Battlefield\, which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The tour will offer attendees a chance to hear about the events which unfolded on that fateful morning while viewing some of the most well-preserved earthworks in the country. A notable story to be shared is that of Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. Gould would later receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle. \n\nFamilies are also invited to join in soldier’s songs with a live performance by the Harken Back String Band. Everyone will enjoy traditional songs of home and military life beginning at 2:30 p.m. \n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 424-acre park to include the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary exhibit titled “We Fight for Our Rights” tells the story of the both the enslaved and free African-Americans who fought for freedom during the American Civil War and their impact on later contributions through the 20th century. The exhibit focuses on the USCT or United States Colored Troops who were formerly enslaved and free African-Americans who joined the Union Army in their fight to end slavery and preserve the Union. \n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

SUMMARY:War in the Pacific Living History Event
DESCRIPTION:This living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting in the Pacific Theater and the home front during World War II. Guests will have the opportunity to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater and about a number of different aspects of a soldier’s life to include weapons\, signals and communications\, and tactical demonstrations. Impressions will range from U.S. Army and Marines to those of British and Russian allies. Civilian living historians will portray goings on at the home front and USO activities stateside. Demonstrations will include medical\, cooking\, weapons and a military uniform and civilian fashion show. A special tactical demonstration will be performed on Saturday afternoon to illustrate the art of fire and maneuver. \nWorld War II\, which was fought between 1939 and 1945\, cost an estimated 85 million casualties both military and civilian worldwide. The United States military casualties amounted to 416\,800. While many were thankful for the surrender in Europe on May 8\, 1945 the war in the Pacific raged on and was far from over. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the first half of the year gave a glimpse of the carnage awaiting invasion forces set to strike the Japanese home islands. A planned Allied invasion on the island of Kyushu was set for November 1st. There 500\,000 Japanese troops were in position and another 6 million were under arms or able to be called into service. This invasion did not come to pass. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Imperial Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The terms were accepted on August 14\, 1945 and a formal document signing ceremony took place aboard the U.S.S. Families will enjoy the chance to meet George Washington\, hear about World War I from an American Doughboy\, participate in 19th century games and take part in a ceremony concluding with a cannon fire salute. All visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. \nGeneral Washington (portrayed by Brian Hilton) will discuss the meaning and legacy of the American War for Independence.  You will have the opportunity to interact with Washington by asking questions and offering your own thoughts about the American Revolution\, the Declaration of Independence\, the 4th of July\, and the union of the states.  What better way to celebrate the birthday of our country than to engage in conversation with the “Father of Our Country”?   There will be opportunities for photographs with General Washington following the program.  This is a family friendly event for people of all ages. \nLiving-historians representing the Hanover Independent Company of 1775 will also share how civilians supported patriots and British forces in the American Revolutionary War. Visitors can hear the Citizens of Old Virginia perform musical tunes from the Civil War as they share home front views of the war from both northern and southern perspectives. \nBill Stallings will bring the Great War to life as an American soldier better known as Doughboys from World War I. Visitors can hear about America’s unprepared mobilization and the experience of fighting in trenches and facing new technologies\, during this terrible conflict. DESCRIPTION:This themed tea offers tasty tea and treats with a program highlighting the holidays as they were celebrated at a distance during the Civil War. \nPark staff attired in mid 1800s clothing will explore how Americans celebrated the Christmas season during the Civil War. It was a difficult time as letters were the only form of communication with family and soldiers often far away from home. Experience how these letters from home brought cheer to soldiers in the field and provided a connection to loved ones back at home. \nAttendees will learn how holiday meals usually required substitutions at home with scarce provisions and soldiers made do with what they could forage around their camp. Even the gifts from home of knitted items or food brought tears to soldiers eyes\, as they might provide the only physical connection to the loved ones who sent them. \nThe Park’s Tea & Tidings will only be offered one afternoon and space is limited. This event is offered both in person and virtually. Due to the popularity of the tea programs\, reservations and prepayment are required. RSVP by December 3rd to attend in person. DESCRIPTION:Costumed guides portraying “agents of death” will lead participants by candlelight on a spine-chilling tour through the historic park and Breakthrough Battlefield. At various stops\, guests will encounter escapees on the run\, the sounds of battle\, a surgeon performing grisly work in a field hospital and more. These and other ghouls will recount their stories and share some of the more macabre and spirit-filled folklore from the past. Tours will be accompanied by sights and sounds that heighten the senses while breaking the silence of the night. \nBased on folklore and stories of the Civil War era\, the naturally haunting atmosphere of Pamplin Historical Park gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Park and battlefield after dark. “All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” – Edgar Allen Poe \nThis event is offered on Friday\, October 23 and Saturday October 24 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required to ensure a spot on the tour. DESCRIPTION:The Park hosts several themed tea events throughout the year and this one offers the same tasty tea and treats with a program highlighting holiday traditions.\n\nPark staff attired in antebellum clothing will explore the origins and stories behind traditional holiday decorations such as bells\, candles\, candy canes\, garland\, stockings\, wreaths and more. Discover the origins and traditions surrounding Christmas Cards which began prior to the American Civil War. Attendees will also enjoy what author Richard Paul Evans stated as; “The smells of Christmas are the smells of childhood.” with great tea and treats to evoke memories of the past.\n\nTake this opportunity to experience the holidays with family or friends as C. S. Lewis advised that “Christmas is best pondered\, not with logic\, but with imagination.” Attendees are invited to explore the Park after the event and immerse themselves in our rich national heritage.\n\nThe Park’s Tea & Tidings will only be offered one afternoon and space is limited. SUMMARY:A Christmas Past
DESCRIPTION:Experience the holidays in 19th century style. Families will enjoy the opportunity for children to meet a ‘Thomas Nast’ Santa Claus including photo opportunities and the chance to enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. Thomas Nast is considered to be the “Father of the American Cartoon” and among his most notable works is his creation of the modern version of Santa Claus. \nChildren will have the opportunity to participate in a craft making activity where the finished holiday craft can be taken home or presented as a gift to a friend. Guests are invited to sign a holiday card for mailing to active duty soldiers serving abroad away from home and family for the holidays. \nEveryone can step into the past with holiday trimmings and décor as the historic Tudor Hall is transformed into a mid-1800’s home for the holidays. Costumed interpreters will provide holiday specific programming throughout the day for this full immersion experience. As former U.S. President Calvin Coolidge said\, “Christmas is not a time nor a season\, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill\, to be plenteous in mercy\, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” \nSoldiers throughout time spent some holidays away from friends and family and Civil War soldiers did as well. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how soldiers decorated their quarters for the holidays and celebrated Christmas in the field while on campaign. Costumed interpreters will portray these soldiers and bring this special experience to life. \nAll activities are included with regular park admission and children ages 5 and under receive free admission.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:As former U.S. President Ronald Reagan stated “We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give\, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty\, though it never was. Most of all\, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.” In the spirit of Reagan’s quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations on Medal of Honor recipients\, a comparison of Civil War and U.S. World War II soldiers\, a performance of soldier’s songs from the Civil War and a ceremony with cannon fire salute. \nPark Director of Education\, Tim Talbott will present a talk at 11:15 am on Medal of Honor recipients from the Breakthrough Battle which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The most notable of these was Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. \n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon with a presentation of colors by the Virginia State University ROTC Color Guard followed by a cannon fire salute. Afterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a World War II G.I. living-history demonstration where historical comparisons will be made between the soldiers of both wars. Visitors will see that some elements remain the same and many different as General George S. Patton observed in his quote\, “If everyone is thinking alike\, someone isn’t thinking.”\n\n\nFamilies are also invited to join in soldier’s songs at 2:45 pm from the Civil War with a live performance by the Haversacks and Hardtack String Band. Everyone will enjoy traditional songs of home such as “Just Before the Battle Mother” and more lighthearted songs like “Goober Peas.”\n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary display of World War II artifacts will also be available for viewing in the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
