SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Stephen Davis who currently serves as the Book Review editor  for the Civil War News. His presentation is titled\, “Hood’s Flank Attack at Atlanta\, July 22\, 1864: Why Jackson’s Flank Attack at Chancellorsville Succeeded\, and Hood’s Did Not.” \nSteve has been a Civil War buff since the 4th grade. He attended Emory University\, and studied under the renowned Civil War historian Bell Wiley. After a Master’s degree in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, he taught high school for a few years\, then earned his Ph.D. at Emory\, where he concentrated on the theme of the Civil War in Southern literature. \nHe served as Book Review Editor for Blue & Gray Magazine from 1984 to 2005\, and is the author of more than a hundred articles in such scholarly and popular publications as Civil War Times Illustrated and the Georgia Historical Quarterly. \nSteve is the author of several books on the Atlanta Campaign: Atlanta Will Fall: Sherman\, John Johnston and the Heavy Yankee Battalions\, and What the Yankees Did to Us: Sherman’s Bombardment and Wrecking of Atlanta. In May 2016 Savas Beatie published his paperback\, A Long and Bloody Task: The Atlanta Campaign from Dalton through Kennesaw Mountain to the Chattahoochee\, May 5-July 18\, 1864. His companion volume is being released this spring: All the Fighting They Want: The Atlanta Campaign from Peach Tree Creek to the Surrender of the City\, July 18-September 2\, 1864. \nDr. Davis is also a talking head. In 2015 he served as a speaker and consultant for the television documentary\, “When Georgia Howled: Sherman on the March\,” a joint production of the Atlanta History Center and Georgia Public Broadcasting. \nSteve is also a popular speaker to Civil War Round Tables and historical societies around the country. His favorite event was when he was invited to speak to the annual meeting of the American Civil War Round Table (UK) in London. Instead\, our own Director of Education\, Interpretation\, Visitor Services & Collections\, Tim Talbott will speak on “Visionary or Iconoclastic: Maj. Gen. Patrick Cleburne and His Proposal to Emancipate and Arm Slaves for the Confederacy.” \nOctober’s Round Table guest speaker is the nationally recognized award-winning author and historian Ed Bearss. Mr. Bearss will be speaking on the “April 1\, 1865\, Battle of Five Forks”.  Mr. Bearss is a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II\, a military historian and author known for his work on the American Civil War and World War II eras. He is also a popular tour guide of historic battlefields for The Smithsonian Associates. DESCRIPTION:Join this month’s guest speaker Caroline Janney\, Professor of History of American Civil War at the University of Virginia as she talks about “We Were Not Paroled: The Surrender of Lee’s Men beyond Appomattox Court House”. \nDr. Janney is the director of the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia . A graduate of the University of Virginia’s doctoral program\, Janney most recently taught at Purdue University. She is the author of two outstanding works in the field of Civil War studies\, Burying the Dead but Not the Past: Ladies’ Memorial Associations and the Lost Cause and Remembering the Civil War: Reunion and the Limits of Reconciliation\, both published by the University of North Carolina Press. She also has edited two volumes of essays\, published numerous scholarly articles\, and is completing a study of the demobilization of the Army of Northern Virginia. Dr. Janney received both the Charles S. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Peter S. Carmichael will speak at a special luncheon during the Park’s Breakthrough Battle Anniversary Weekend on March 30th at noon. Carmichael will discuss his latest book and share some of his research on the Petersburg Campaign.  Attendees will have an opportunity to read and raise questions about some of the sources he utilized for his new book The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought\, Fought\, and Survived in Civil War Armies. \nReservations for this author luncheon are required and can be made by calling (804) 861-2408. A registration fee of $45.00 includes the luncheon lecture\, boxed lunch and a copy of Carmichael’s new book The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought\, Fought\, and Survived in Civil War Armies. An assortment of box lunch selection options include; The Italian Sandwich\, Turkey Sandwich\, Ham and Swiss Sandwich\, Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich or a Caesar Salad. Luncheon attendees are invited to explore the Park afterwards\, with their included regular daily Park admission. \nDr. Peter S. Carmichael is the Fluhrer Professor of History and the Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. He completed his doctorate at Penn State University and then went on to teach at Western Carolina University\, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and West Virginia University. Carmichael is the author of seven books including The Last Generation: Young Virginians in Peace\, War\, and Reunion\, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2005.

DESCRIPTION:Join this month’s guest speaker Jerry “Dez” Desmond\, Executive Director of Pamplin Historical Park as he talks about “Maine Troops at Gettysburg”. \nDesmond’s career includes 22 years of professional museum experience in the areas of education\, curation\, and administration. He has written numerous historical articles and multiple books including “Turning the Tide at Gettysburg: How Maine Saved the Union.”Since his time at La Paglia and Associates\, he has served as a consultant leading the development and expansion of new and existing museums. Desmond was involved with over 20 mostly Civil War-related museum projects across the Southeast while serving with La Paglia and Associates. \nDesmond has received the Tennessee Association of Museums Award of Excellence for four consecutive years 1996-1999. More recently\, he has served as the Director of the Rome History Museum in Georgia and the Birmingham History Center in Alabama. His master degrees in both education and history were completed at the University of Maine.
