SUMMARY:Toys for Tots Collection
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park is proud to be a collection point for Toys for Tots from November 25 through December 13\, 2019. Park admission is not required to drop off a gift. \nVisitors are invited to bring a new unwrapped gift during this time to the Park for distribution to under-privileged children whose parents cannot afford to buy gifts for Christmas. This coincides with the mission of the Toys for Tots program which “is to collect new\, unwrapped toys during October\, November and December each year\, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.” \nThe stated goal is to “deliver\, through a new toy at Christmas\, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible\, productive\, and patriotic citizens.” \nThe Toys for Tots program was founded in 1947 and is operated by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. As of 2016\, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed more than 512 million toys.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:As former U.S. President Ronald Reagan stated “We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give\, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty\, though it never was. Most of all\, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.” In the spirit of Reagan’s quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations on Medal of Honor recipients\, a comparison of Civil War and U.S. World War II soldiers\, a performance of soldier’s songs from the Civil War and a ceremony with cannon fire salute. \nPark Director of Education\, Tim Talbott will present a talk at 11:15 am on Medal of Honor recipients from the Breakthrough Battle which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The most notable of these was Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. \n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon with a presentation of colors by the Virginia State University ROTC Color Guard followed by a cannon fire salute. Afterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a World War II G.I. living-history demonstration where historical comparisons will be made between the soldiers of both wars. Visitors will see that some elements remain the same and many different as General George S. Patton observed in his quote\, “If everyone is thinking alike\, someone isn’t thinking.”\n\n\nFamilies are also invited to join in soldier’s songs at 2:45 pm from the Civil War with a live performance by the Haversacks and Hardtack String Band. Everyone will enjoy traditional songs of home such as “Just Before the Battle Mother” and more lighthearted songs like “Goober Peas.”\n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary display of World War II artifacts will also be available for viewing in the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This Halloween have a hauntingly good time while enjoying great tea and treats. Learn about the historical importance of 19th century Victorian mourning traditions\, and mourning attire while enjoying fall themed refreshments. Hear about some of the many terrifying urban legends from the Victorian era. Many of these legends were loosely based in fact and then propelled into a contentiousness of fear. \nTake this opportunity to experience what Edgar Allan Poe described as\, “The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends\, and where the other begins?” from his work “The Premature Burial”. \nThe Park’s Halloween Tea will only be offered one afternoon and space is limited. Due to the popularity of the tea programs\, reservations and prepayment are required. RSVP on Eventbrite by October 24th. The event will be held at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. DESCRIPTION:As essayist John Burroughs stated “That which distinguishes this day from all others is that then both orators and artillerymen shoot blank cartridges.” In the spirit of Burroughs’ quote\, Pamplin Historical Park staff will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations of 1856 Independence Day campaign speeches and a ceremony with a cannon fire salute.\n\nFamilies are invited to participate in 19th century games such as a sack race and 3-legged race among others to be held on the picturesque Tudor Hall lawn. A period baseball game will also be held at the Battlefield Center Field where guests are invited to join in the game. \n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond.\n\nCivil War programming will be joined by an American Revolutionary War living-history demonstration where historical comparisons will be made between the soldiers of both wars. DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier will offer a full schedule of daily programs on Memorial Day\, Monday May 28. The Park will open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and activities are included with regular museum admission and food vendors Good Doggies Hot Dogs and Hau Lani Hawaiian Shave Ice will be selling treats from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This will also be the first day of one dollar general admission at the Park. \nA special Memorial Day program will begin at 12:30 p.m. During this program\, visitors will learn about a number of specific soldiers and their personal experiences during the Civil War. These “It is with Sorrow that I Write” stories will be presented using source material taken from their own letters. Their stories illustrate the causes and consequences of the Civil War. The program will include an artillery firing followed by the presentation of the colors and a playing of Taps. \nA Breakthrough Battlefield Tour will give visitors a chance to learn about the events of April 2\, 1865 which is followed by bugle calls and a Civil War camp life demonstration. DESCRIPTION:At Pamplin Historical Park’s Valentine Tea ladies and gentlemen in period dress will teach guests 19th-century etiquette while they enjoy gourmet tea and snacks. SUMMARY:Toys For Tots Collection
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is proud to be a collection point for Toys for Tots from November 20 through December 9\, 2017. Park admission is not required to drop off a gift. \nVisitors are invited to bring a new unwrapped gift during this time to the Park for distribution to under-privileged children whose parents cannot afford to buy gifts for Christmas. This coincides with the mission of the Toys for Tots program which “is to collect new\, unwrapped toys during October\, November and December each year\, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.” \nThe stated goal is to “deliver\, through a new toy at Christmas\, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible\, productive\, and patriotic citizens.” \nThe Toys for Tots program was founded in 1947 and is operated by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. As of 2016\, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed more than 512 million toys.

Hosted by our living history interpreters\, you’ll enjoy an afternoon of gourmet teas and tasty treats while learning 19th-century ladies traditions\, etiquette\, parlor games\, and antebellum society life. Live music and a period fashion show are new additions for attendees to enjoy. \nReservations required. Payment must be made in advance\, $20 for Park Members and $24 for non-members.  Seatings at 10:00am and 2:00pm.  Space is limited.
