SUMMARY:Roundtable: Six Days of Awful Fighting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Eric Wittenberg will discuss\, “Six Days of Awful Fighting: Cavalry Operations on the Road to Cold Harbor.” \nMost students of the Civil War are familiar with the terrible infantry fighting that occurred on June 1-3\, 1864 at Cold Harbor in Hanover County\, Virginia. Many however\, are unfamiliar with the concerted cavalry fighting that took place prior to the battle of Cold Harbor on May 27 to June 1. This fighting pitted the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac against the Cavalry Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. These forces opposed each other at places like Hanovertown\, Haw’s Shop\, Matadequin Creek\, Hanover Court House\, Ashland\, and\, finally\, Cold Harbor itself. The May 28\, 1864\, battle of Haw’s Shop was considered the fiercest cavalry battle of the war to date; but\, it would be shadowed two weeks later by the battle of Trevilian Station. Haw’s Shop elevated Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton to prominence as the new commander of the Army of Northern Virginia’s Cavalry Corps following the death of the former cavalry chief\, Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart\, 16 days earlier. Other notable characters involved in these actions include Philip H. Sheridan\, Fitzhugh Lee\, George A. Custer\, and David M. Gregg. \nEric J. Wittenberg is an award-winning author of Civil War history from southeastern Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Dickinson College\, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. He is a partner in the Columbus\, Ohio law firm of Cook\, Sladoje & Wittenberg Co.\, L.P.A.\, where he manages the firm’s litigation practice. \nWittenberg has authored 22 books on the American Civil War and over three dozen articles published in national publications. He speaks and conducts battlefield tours regularly across the country. DESCRIPTION:Join Pamplin Historical Park’s Valentine Tea where park staff are attired in mid- 1800s\, clothing and will present a themed program. Due to the popularity of this program\, reservations and prepayment are required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Victorians were creative in divining what their true loves would look like\, what their names would start with\, and other defining features. Victorian men and women attempted to divine their future spouses in all sorts of ways: pouring melted lead into cold water to figure out her future husband’s profession from the shapes made\, dipping hands into various bowls of water blindfolded to determine whether they will marry a bachelor\, widower\, or remain single\, roasting nuts over the fire to find out whether a couple is compatible. \nThis Valentine’s Day Tea we will divine our future loves and spouses.  We will explore some of these fortune-telling methods to see how well they work with current couples\, and allow single folks to explore their possibilities in romance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis in person event cost is $30.00 per person for non-members and $25.00 for park members. \nPurchase in person event ticket(s) by clicking here. \nA separate virtual option is available. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Stephen A. Swails: Black Freedom Fighter
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Gordon Rhea as he shares the story of “Stephen A. Swails: Black Freedom Fighter in the Civil War and Reconstruction.” \nStephen Atkins Swails was a free Black in the North prior to the American Civil War. Swails would join the war effort and become the first African American combat officer in the United States military. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry that was the main unit featured in the 1989 film Glory. Swails finished his war service and settled in South Carolina where he held important positions in the Freedmen’s Bureau. While there\, Swails helped to draft the state constitution\, served in the state senate and secured legislation to assist liberated Black citizens. \nGordon C. Rhea is the author of seven award-winning books about the American Civil War and most famously for his series on the Overland Campaign. His works include; The Battle of the Wilderness\, The Battles at Spotsylvania Court House and the Road to Yellow Tavern\, To the North Anna River\, Cold Harbor\, On To Petersburg\, Carrying the Flag\, and In the Footsteps of Grant and Lee. Mr. Rhea is a national lecturer at numerous historical societies\, universities\, and historic preservation organizations on military history subjects and the Civil War era. SUMMARY:Roundtable: The Army of the Potomac on the Overland & Petersburg Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Steven Sodergren as he shares the story of “The Army of the Potomac in the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns.” \nThe final year of the Civil War found the Army of the Potomac endured months of brutal trench warfare and fighting against their Confederate adversaries. Sondergren will explore the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns where the morale of the soldiers was tested as attrition and the new grim realities of a lengthy campaign set in. \nSteven E. Sodergren is a professor and Chair of the Department of History and Political Science at Norwich University located in Norwich\, Vermont. Sodergren earned his B.A. in history and philosophy from Cornell College followed by an M.A. and PhD in American and military history from the University of Kansas. Since 2007\, he has taught in the history and political science department at Norwich University. He is the resident Civil War scholar and regularly leads students on staff rides to famous Civil War battlefields. In 2018\, Sodergren was the first author associated with Norwich University to win the prestigious Colby Award. \nColby Award recipients receive a $5\,000 author honorarium provided through the generosity of the Chicago-based Pritzker Military Foundation. Named for the late ambassador and former CIA director William E. Colby\, the Colby Award recognizes a first solo work of fiction or non-fiction that has made a significant contribution to the public’s understanding of intelligence operations\, military history or international affairs. The William E. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Petersburg's Regiment: The 12th Virginia Infantry
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker John Horn as he share the story of “Petersburg’s Regiment: The 12th Virginia Infantry.” \nHorn spent decades researching the 12th Virginia Infantry through searching archives and uncovering scores of previously unknown accounts. In his book\, Petersburg’s Regiment: The 12th Virginia Infantry\, Horn shares personal glimpses of the men who served from the hanging of the abolitionist John Brown through the surrender at Appomattox 1859-1865. Tales of the hard fighting in between includes participation in the battles of Seven Pines\, Chancellorsville\, Gettysburg\, Spotsylvania and the nine month siege of Petersburg. \nJohn Horn is a native of the Chicago area who married his wife\, a native of Richmond\, Virginia. Horn received his B.A. in English and Latin from New College and a J.D. from Columbia Law School. Although he practices law\, Horn has always had a passion for history. He has published several articles in Civil War Illustrated and America’s Civil War. He has authored books to include The Destruction of the Weldon Railroad and The Petersburg Campaign. Horn has also co-edited Civil War Talks with fellow author Hampton Newsome and blogs at petersburgcampaign@blogspot.com. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:Pamplin Historical Park will offer multiple programs throughout the day\, to include presentations on artillery “The King of Battle”\, a lecture and living-history demonstration on the Spanish-American War\, a live musical performance of soldier’s songs and a ceremony with cannon fire salute. \n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon with a presentation of colors followed by a cannon fire salute. Afterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a Spanish-American War lecture and living-history demonstration in the park’s Education Center. \n\nPark staff will conduct a guided walking tour at 1:45 p.m. of the Breakthrough Battlefield\, which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The tour will offer attendees a chance to hear about the events which unfolded on that fateful morning while viewing some of the most well-preserved earthworks in the country. A notable story to be shared is that of Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. Gould would later receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle. \n\nFamilies are also invited to join in soldier’s songs with a live performance by the Harken Back String Band. Everyone will enjoy traditional songs of home and military life beginning at 2:30 p.m. \n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 424-acre park to include the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary exhibit titled “We Fight for Our Rights” tells the story of the both the enslaved and free African-Americans who fought for freedom during the American Civil War and their impact on later contributions through the 20th century. The exhibit focuses on the USCT or United States Colored Troops who were formerly enslaved and free African-Americans who joined the Union Army in their fight to end slavery and preserve the Union. \n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

SUMMARY:Roundtable: The New Market Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Sarah Bierle as she discusses “The New Market Campaign.” \nThe Battle of New Market took place on May 15\, 1864 during what is known as the Valley Campaigns of 1864. A larger Union force being the Army of the Shenandoah under Major General Franz Sigel was defeated while confronting a smaller Confederate force totaling some 4\,100 men. Among the Confederate force were the cadets of Virginia Military Institute which were ordered into battle by Confederate general John C. Breckinridge. This is the most remembered aspect of the battle today where 10 VMI cadets were killed or died of their wounds and 45 were wounded out of the total of 257 cadets that participated in the battle. A section of the battlefield where many cadets lost their shoes is known as the “Field of Lost Shoes” and inspired the fictionalized 2014 film by the same name.\n\nSarah Kay Bierle is the managing editor for Emerging Civil War and is a staff member with Central Virginia Battlefields Trust. DESCRIPTION:Based on true accounts\, these Virginia stories will lead you through a cemetery walk. You will meet spirits of the past\, brought to life for one night to tell their tales of how they perished. The naturally haunting atmosphere of Pamplin Historical Park will enhance your visit to our battlefield after dark. \nCostumed guides portraying “agents of death” will lead participants by candlelight on a spine-chilling tour through the Breakthrough Battlefield. At various stops\, guests will encounter victims of murder\, stabbing\, neglect\, drowning\, and more. These and other ghouls will recount their stories and share some of the details of their sinister past that led them to an early grave. Tours will be accompanied by sights and sounds that heighten the senses while breaking the silence of the night. \nBased on original corner’s reports\, the naturally haunting atmosphere of Pamplin Historical Park gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Park and battlefield after dark. \nThis event is offered on Friday\, October 29\, and Saturday\, October 30 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required to ensure a spot on the tour. The lantern-lit walk begins at the Hart Farm\, located at 6915 Duncan Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Lee\, lashed out at the Federals\, resulting in the Seven Days Battle. \nThe tour will leave from the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Historical Park promptly at 8:30 a.m. and return by 5:30 p.m. We will trace the steps of Lee’s and McClellan’s armies to the battlefields of Mechanicsville\, Gaines’ Mill\, Savage’s Station\, White Oak Swamp\, Glendale and Malvern Hill. SUMMARY:Roundtable: The Lawrence\, Kansas Massacre
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Matthew Hulbert\, author and professor as he discusses “The Lawrence\, Kansas Massacre”. The irregular warfare along the borderlands of Missouri and Kansas saw guerrilla fighters known as pro-Confederate bushwhackers or pro-Union jayhawkers attack small detachments of soldiers and terrorize civilian communities. U.S. senator James H. Lane led a raid by pro-Union against the town of Osceola\, Missouri in September of 1861. Nine men were executed and the town was looted and all but 3 of the towns 800 buildings were burned. The town never fully recovered and the raid culminated in the forming of Confederate partisan rangers known as bushwhackers. Nearly a year later\, in August of 1862\, one of the most infamous Confederate partisan groups in the region would exact revenge for what happened at Osceola. William Clarke Quantrill and his raiders would attack Lawrence\, Kansas and kill nearly 200 men and boys in one of the most violent raids of the war. \nHulbert is an assistant professor of history at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. His studies and interests include Nineteenth-Century America\, the Civil War\, technology and warfare\, regular and irregular warfare and the American West. DESCRIPTION:Speaker Hampton Newsome will discuss the fighting and struggles during the Civil War in North Carolina in his presentation titled\, “The Fight for the Old North State.” \nIn early January of 1864\, Confederate General Robert E. Lee would write a dispatch that set into motion one of the the last Confederate offensives of the war. Lee had written to Confederate president Jefferson Davis ” The time is at hand when\, if an attempt can be made to capture the enemy’s forces at New Berne\, it should be done.” This dispatch began a series of events to move Confederate forces into position to assault and seize Union bases in North Carolina. Newsome will tell attendees about these operations set against the backdrop of a supply crisis\, emerging peace movement and a gubernatorial election. \nNewsome is an attorney who lives in Arlington\, Virginia. Newsome has written two books titled; The Fight for the Old North State: The Civil War in North Carolina\, January-May 1864 and Richmond Must Fall: The Richmond-Petersburg Campaign\, October 1864. Richmond Must Fall was recognized by the Civil War Monitor as a best book in 2013 and was a finalist for the Richard B. Harwell Book Award given by the Atlanta Civil War Roundtable. He is also an editor of Civil War Talks: Further Reminiscences of George S. Bernard and His Fellow Veterans. DESCRIPTION:Join us this Independence Day as Pamplin Historical Park will offer multiple programs throughout the day. Families will enjoy the chance to meet George Washington\, hear about World War I from an American Doughboy\, participate in 19th century games and take part in a ceremony concluding with a cannon fire salute. All visitors will have the opportunity to join staff for tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. \nGeneral Washington (portrayed by Brian Hilton) will discuss the meaning and legacy of the American War for Independence.  You will have the opportunity to interact with Washington by asking questions and offering your own thoughts about the American Revolution\, the Declaration of Independence\, the 4th of July\, and the union of the states.  What better way to celebrate the birthday of our country than to engage in conversation with the “Father of Our Country”?   There will be opportunities for photographs with General Washington following the program.  This is a family friendly event for people of all ages. \nLiving-historians representing the Hanover Independent Company of 1775 will also share how civilians supported patriots and British forces in the American Revolutionary War. Visitors can hear the Citizens of Old Virginia perform musical tunes from the Civil War as they share home front views of the war from both northern and southern perspectives. \nBill Stallings will bring the Great War to life as an American soldier better known as Doughboys from World War I. Visitors can hear about America’s unprepared mobilization and the experience of fighting in trenches and facing new technologies\, during this terrible conflict. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Confederate Supply & Logistics
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Zachary Pittard will discuss “Considering What Has Been Said of Their Condition:’ Confederate Supply and Logistics.” \nCivil War armies were no different than any other army at any time in history. When it comes to supplies and logistics\, soldiers need to be clothed\, fed\, housed and horses and mules need to be acquired\, cared for and trained. All of these various materials and animals also need to be transported to where the troops are whether it’s in the field on campaign or in a camp. This can mean having to navigate waterways to a port\, roll along dusty trails in wagons or riding the rails by train. \nPittard will address some of the unique challenges that faced the Confederate forces. Unlike their Union adversaries\, many southern ports were blockaded. This restricted trade and incoming supplies to be brought in from overseas. Long supply lines often meant delays and threats from Union raiders who would attack the wagon convoys or destroy rails. Pittard will also explore the myth of the ragged rebel and other public perceptions that contrast folklore with reality. \nMr. Zachary Pittard received his B.A. in History from Longwood University and his studies focus on 19th Century American History\, Virginia History from Colonization to the Civil Rights Era. He is a former educator and ranger with Virginia State Parks at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Baseball in the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Jerry Desmond\, Executive Director of Pamplin Historical Park as he shares a history and stories from America’s pastime with his presentation titled\, “It Will Repair Our Losses and be a Blessing: Baseball in the Civil War.” \nBaseball is believed to have evolved from an older bat-and-ball game in Great Britain and Ireland known as rounders in the mid-1700s. By the 1830s variants of baseball began to be played in North America. It was not until June 19\, 1846 the first recognized baseball game was played in the United States between the New York Knickerbockers and the New York Nine. The Knickerbocker Rules would form the basis of modern baseball continuing to change over the next half a century.\n\nSoon journalists were referring to baseball as the “national pastime” before the storm clouds of Civil War emerged on the horizon. Civil War soldiers on both sides would play baseball when in camp or during breaks on the march. Early in the war\, even prisoners-of-war would play the game while incarcerated to pass the time. The game was a little different then\, being played with either two or four bases and a runner was only considered out when “hit” with the pitcher’s ball.\n\nDesmond’s career includes 22 years of professional museum experience in the areas of education\, curation\, and administration. He has written numerous historical articles and multiple books including “Turning the Tide at Gettysburg: How Maine Saved the Union.” Since his time at La Paglia and Associates\, he has served as a consultant leading the development and expansion of new and existing museums. Desmond was involved with over 20 mostly Civil War-related museum projects across the Southeast while serving with La Paglia and Associates.\n\nDesmond has received the Tennessee Association of Museums Award of Excellence for four consecutive years 1996-1999. More recently\, he has served as the Director of the Rome History Museum in Georgia and the Birmingham History Center in Alabama. His master degrees in both education and history were completed at the University of Maine. SUMMARY:"We Fight for Our Rights" Temporary Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This new exhibit tells the story of the both the enslaved and free African-Americans who fought for freedom during the American Civil War and their impact on later contributions through the 20th century. The exhibit focuses on the USCT or United States Colored Troops who were formerly enslaved and free African-Americans who joined the Union Army in their fight to end slavery and preserve the Union. It is estimated that approximately 180\,000 men rose to join the fight in the ranks of the USCT. Their numbers amounted to ten percent of the Union Army which formed at least 166 regiments that would fight in 450 battle engagements. The ultimate Union victory paved the way for three amendments to the US Constitution. The 13th that abolished slavery\, the 14th gave African-Americans equal protection under the law\, and the 15th gave African-American men the right to vote. \nThe exhibit continues the African-American military post-war story by sharing the contributions and struggles of the Buffalo Soldiers of the Plains Wars\, the Harlem Hellfighters of World War I and the Tuskegee Airmen who took to the skies during World War II in a segregated United States military. Desegregation of the United States Armed Forces came in the form of Executive Order 9981 on July 26\, 1948. This opened further opportunities leading to females in expanded military service roles in the 1970s. A combination of artifacts\, images and prints will invite visitors to follow the road to freedom and beyond. \nThis special exhibit will be open through November of 2021 and included with regular daily admission.

DESCRIPTION:Park historians will lead a tour through the Breakthrough Battle of April 2nd\, 1865 while bringing the conflict and personalities alive for this special experience on the actual battlefield. The tour will begin at the Jones Farm parking area located at 6503 Church Road\, Petersburg 23803. Attendees will follow the route of the Union Army of the Potomac’s VI Corps assault to the Confederate earthworks defended by Brig. Gen. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Forged in Battle - The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers & White Officers
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Joseph Glatthaar will discuss “Forged in Battle: The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and White Officers”. \nJust sixteen months after the Civil War began\, the Federal government started to recruit black soldiers. This provided a unique opportunity for the 180\,000 free blacks and former slaves to join the fight as United States Colored Troops. At wars’ end\, 37\,000 USCT would fill the ranks in their fight for freedom.\n\nDr. Joseph T. Glatthaar is the current Stephenson Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina and the Adjunct Professor of the Curriculum in Peace\, War and Defense. Glatthaar specializes in the American Civil War and American military history on the under graduate and graduate levels. SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9\, 1862 changed naval warfare and heralded an end to the age of sail. Over four hours\, the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia ironclads dueled each other to a draw as spectators watched from a nearby shoreline. Many were skeptical that the “cheesebox on a raft” as the Monitor was called was a match for the Virginia who had reeked havoc and destruction on the previous day at the U.S. Navy Yard in Hampton Roads. The Monitor’s performance inspired the Union to accelerate their ironclad-building program and caused a nation to admire this new invention. \nJohnathan White is associate professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University. He has authored ten books and written over one hundred articles\, essays and reviews on Civil War subjects. White is a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians and serves on the Boards of Directors of the Abraham Lincoln Institute\, the Abraham Lincoln Association and the Lincoln Forum. He additionally won the Outstanding Faculty Award of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in 2019. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDue to the governor’s November 13th statewide restrictions which limits gatherings to a total of 25 people\, we require those wishing to attend this meeting to reserve your place on a first come- first serve basis. DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Chris Mackowski of Emerging Civil War for his presentation “Fighting at the North Anna” during the Overland Campaign. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Mackowski\, Ph.D.\, is the editor-in-chief and co-founder of Emerging Civil War. He is the series editor of the award-winning Emerging Civil War Series\, published by Savas Beatie\, and the “Engaging the Civil War” Series\, published in partnership with Southern Illinois University Press. Chris is a writing professor in the Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany\, NY\, where he also serves as associate dean for undergraduate programs. Chris is also historian-in-residence at Stevenson Ridge\, a historic property on the Spotsylvania battlefield in central Virginia. He has also worked as a historian for the National Park Service at Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park\, where he gives tours at four major Civil War battlefields (Fredericksburg\, Chancellorsville\, Wilderness\, and Spotsylvania)\, as well as at the building where Stonewall Jackson died. Chris has authored or co-authored a dozen books on the Civil War\, and his articles have appeared in all the major Civil War magazines. SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Ray Brown\, Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources Management at Manassas National Battlefield Park\, as he presents his presentation on “Soldier Remains at Manassas and Battlefield Archaeology.” \nThe Battle of Second Manassas was fought on August 28-30\, 1862. This fierce contest between Confederate and Union forces resulted in approximately 22\,000 casualties out of a total of around 112\,000 men engaged in the fight. Two of the mortally wounded Union soldiers were taken to a field hospital where they succumbed to their wounds. Afterwards\, they were placed in a shallow burials pit along with amputated limbs from other soldiers injured in the battle. They would lay undisturbed until 2014 when the National Park Service discovered the pit during a utility project. A journey of exploration then began leading the NPS to partner with the Smithsonian Institution and eventually lead them to Arlington National Cemetery. \nSpeaker Ray Brown is the Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources Management at Manassas National Battlefield Park. Brown has an over 32 year career with the National Park Service which has included working at Fredericksburg\, Philadelphia\, Petersburg and for the past 28 years at Manassas. Author and historian Don Johnson has this to say of Brown\, “Ray has a true understanding of the mission of the National Park Service as exhibited through his deep commitment to the preservation of our nation’s Battlefields. DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Dr. Peter S. Carmichael as he takes attendees on a tale of adventure with “The Hicksford Raid” at the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. \nThe Hicksford Raid took place on December 7\, 1864 when Union Major General Govereur K. Warren led 28\,000 men south from petersburf to destroy the Petersburg Railroad between Stony Creek and the Meherrin River railroad bridge at Hicksford. If successful\, this would sever the Confederate supply line. Gen. Warren and his force would be confronted by Confederate generals Wade Hampton and W. H. F. Lee for a contest over this vital lifeline to Petersburg. Dr. Carmichael will captivate attendees with this story and reveal it’s outcome and place in history. \nDr. Carmichael is the Fluhrer Professor of History and the Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. He completed his doctorate at Penn State University and then went on to teach at Western Carolina University\, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and West Virginia University. Carmichael is the author of seven books including The Last Generation: Young Virginians in Peace\, War\, and Reunion\, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2005. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. James Broomall on August 6\, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. as he reveals “Private Confederacies: The Emotional Worlds of Southern Men as Citizens and Soldiers” at the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. \nDr. Broomall is the Director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War and an associate professor of History at Sheperd University located in Shepherdstown\, West Virginia. Prior to joining the Shepard University staff\, Broomall taught history at the University of North Florida and earned his master’s degree in history and museum studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \n\nBroomall’s passion for Civil War-era history has lead him to work in a variety of academic institutions\, museums and to develop courses and programs focusing on the experiences of civilians\, soldiers and slaves during the mid-Nineteenth Century. He has published and edited several works and articles. SUMMARY:Breakthrough Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:*Due to ongoing concerns about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)\, Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is cancelling or postponing all events and programs until April 15\, 2020\, based upon the guidance of the CDC regarding “social distancing” and the elimination of large gatherings.  This decision is being made out of an abundance of caution.  It will be impossible to know if we are overreacting or doing too much\, but it will be quite apparent if we under react or do too little.  Please continue to check our website and social media accounts for additional updates.* \nJoin Park historians as they tour the Breakthrough Battle of April 2nd\, 1865 while bringing the conflict and personalities alive for this special experience on the actual battlefield. The tour will begin at the historic Hart Farm which survived the battle and has been restored to its wartime appearance. \nAfter a brief overview of the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns\, guests will then embark on a tour of the battlefield to explore the original terrain features while incorporating the history that unfolded on this National Landmark site resulting in the collapse of Petersburg defenses and the withdrawal of Confederate forces from Richmond. Seven days later after a running fight out to Appomattox Courthouse\, the war would be over on April 9\, 1865. \nPristine earthworks\, rifle pits\, artillery redans and the picturesque Large and Small Meadows are included in this walking tour. Space on this tour is limited.
