A wrinkle in a sleeve sent Richard Lewis on a six-year research project that resulted in two articles in Civil War Times magazine and revealed a fascinating surprise. Join us as Richard presents a lively and fun PowerPoint taking us step-by-step through his discoveries and enabling audience members to play “history detective” along with him. \nRichard Lewis is a native of Gulfport\, Mississippi\, and a graduate of Louisiana State University where he studied Civil War history under Pulitzer Prize-winner Dr. T. Harry Williams. SUMMARY:World War II 80th Anniversary Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This 80th anniversary living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting abroad and the war on the home front during World War II. Guests will have the chance to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in WWII and about different aspects of a soldier’s life including weapons\, signals and communications\, and tactical demonstrations. Impressions will range from U.S. Army and Marines to those of British and Russian allies. Civilian living historians will portray goings on at the home front and USO activities stateside. Demonstrations will include medical\, cooking\, weapons and a military uniform and civilian fashion show. A special tactical demonstration will be performed on Saturday afternoon to illustrate the art of fire and maneuver. Throughout the weekend visitors can experience the VA250 Mobile Museum and compare and contrast the soldiers\, sailors and marines of the American Revolution to those of World War II\, as we commemorate the 250th Birthday Anniversaries of the U.S. Army\, U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps\,  All event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission. \nPartner museums to include; MacArthur Memorial\, U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum\, U.S. Army Ordnance TSF\, U.S. Army Women’s Museum\, and the Virginia War Memorial will have displays and more for visitors to see and experience. Presentations by authors and historians will be throughout the weekend. Actor and historian Charles Wissinger will portray Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Army Lieutenant Audie Murphy and share his amazing story. \nVisitors will have an opportunity to meet and hear about the adventures of U.S. Army First Lieutenant Audie Murphy (portrayed by actor/historian Charles Wissinger) who was an American soldier\, actor and song writer.  He is widely celebrated as the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II\, and has been described as the most highly decorated enlisted soldier in U.S. history. Barnes was born in Niagara Falls\, New York\, and grew up in an Air Force family. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1974 and then joined the Army National Guard in 1977\, retiring as a Virginia Army National Guard chief warrant officer in 2004. He retired from the US Army at Fort Lee in July 2015 after 30 years of service as an Army Civilian including deployments in Desert Storm\, Bosnia\, and Kuwait. He has a master’s degree in Anthropology and has authored or co-authored nine US Military History books. He is currently serving as the Command Historian for the Virginia National Guard. \nAli Kolleda is the education specialist for the Fort Lee Army Museum Enterprise\, which includes the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum\, the U.S. Army Women’s Museum\, and the Ordnance Training Support Facility. Her background is in collections management and public history\, and as a museum professional her goal has been to fill gaps in the historic narrative by diversifying collections and programming. She has a master’s degree in Public History from James Madison University and has been working in Army Museums for 13 years. Ms. Kolleda has presented at the Society for History in the Federal Government\, the American Association for State and Local History\, the Virginia War Memorial\, and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and is credited on several government and private publications\, including The SixTripleEight documentary\, outlining the service of the historic 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion in the European Theater during World War II. \nJennifer Cottle is a Museum Attendant and Museum Specialist working with the MacArthur Memorial and the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation. Since becoming a staff member\, she has worked with material in the museum collections to help share the stories of the thousands of Allied civilians interned in the Philippines during WWII with the public through virtual outreach and education programs. Jennifer graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in Anthropology in 2014 and worked in the field of archaeology for several years before joining the staff at the MacArthur Memorial. She is currently pursuing a M.A. in Public History and plans to incorporate the food history of the WWII internment camps into her capstone project. \nColin Romanick is the current Executive Director of Pamplin Historical Park and has worked in the museum field for over 20 years in the areas of education\, finance and marketing. He is a graduate of Christopher Newport University where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration. Romanick worked for the City of Newport News\, Historic Services Division for 13 years. During that time he conducted educational programs\, tours and assisted in the acquisition of artifacts for the Virginia War Museum. Romanick is a published author and contributing writer of numerous historical articles for various periodicals. Prior to joining Pamplin Historical Park\, he has worked as an educator for the US Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee and conducted tours at historic Endview Plantation and Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News\, VA. \nChildren are invited to experience a World War II training obstacle course and enjoy craft activities to include World War II coloring books and making a take home project of the Roosevelt’s Scottie Dog “Fala.” \nWorld War II\, which was fought between 1939 and 1945\, cost an estimated 85 million casualties both military and civilian worldwide. The United States military casualties amounted to 416\,800. While many were thankful for the surrender in Europe on May 8\, 1945 the war in the Pacific raged on and was far from over. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the first half of the year gave a glimpse of the carnage awaiting invasion forces set to strike the Japanese home islands. A planned Allied invasion on the island of Kyushu was set for November 1st. There 500\,000 Japanese troops were in position and another 6 million were under arms or able to be called into service. This invasion did not come to pass. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Imperial Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The terms were accepted on August 14\, 1945 and a formal document signing ceremony took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2nd. \nThis event is held in partnership with Bank of Southside Virginia.

SUMMARY:Cry Liberty! Dinwiddie County Musters for the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join the Park as we commemorate the muster of over 500 militia men from Dinwiddie County\, Virginia who answered the first call at Dinwiddie Courthouse in June of 1775. After forming an active Committee of Correspondence in protest of the Intolerable Acts\, before the events of Lexington and Concord\, Dinwiddie residents rose to join the patriot cause for liberty. We also celebrate the 250th U.S. Army birthday of June 14\, 1775\, before the Declaration of Independence was signed and Flag Day. \nThe day’s program schedule will offer an encampment with American Revolutionary War soldiers throughout the day. They will provide a mock militia enlistment and drill with wooden stick muskets for the young and young at heart. A weapon and camp life demonstration will be offered as well.\nA ceremony will include speakers; Dinwiddie County Supervisor and veteran William Chavis\, U.S. Army Fort Gregg-Adams Garrison Commander\, Colonel Richard J. Bendelewski\, VA250 Commission Executive Director\, Cheryl Wilson. The ceremony includes a color guard from Fort Gregg-Adams and a cannon fire salute. \nActor and historian\, Charles Wissinger will portray Patrick Henry and offer a talk on the life of the founding father and present his “Liberty or Death” speech. Live acoustic patriotic music will also be performed by the Harken Back String Band. Additional living history includes 18th century crafts and trades displays and a related documentary film will also be offered for viewing. \nAll activities are included with general public regular daily admission. \nFree admission is offered for all active duty Military\, Reservists\, Retirees\, Veterans\, National Guardsmen. This offer is only available on June 14\, 2025 to active duty Military\, Reservists\, Retirees\, Veterans\, National Guardsmen with proper ID\, which includes a Department of Defense photo ID or DD Form 214. Military veterans who separated before retirement can bring a copy of their honorable discharge paperwork\, DD Form 214\, as identification of service.

DESCRIPTION:The park will be open for walk in visitation Memorial Day weekend\, May 24 through May 26 with special activities only being held on Saturday\, May 24th\, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Programming on Saturday only\, will include a presentation by U.S. Army SSG Gualavisivega\, who will share the role of Mortuary Affairs today with a display of artifacts. Park Staff honors those who’ve fallen with a special presentation and tour of the Breakthrough Battlefield and\, Bill Stallings will speak on the sacrifices of the United States military in the Korean War\, while sharing a display from that conflict. \nThe viewing of “War So Terrible” which follows two Civil War soldiers\, Benjamin Franklin Meyers of the Union and Andrew Jackson Stewart of the Confederacy\, will be available for viewing\, in the Battlefield Center. \nThis special Pamplin Historical Park Memorial Day remembrance is sponsored by the Bank of Southside Virginia. SUMMARY:Roundtable: The Beefsteak Raid
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker J. Michael Moore as he shares the story of “The Beefsteak Raid.” Moore’s presentation will focus on the the September 14 through 17\, 1864\, Beefsteak Raid led by Confederate Major General Wade Hampton. Hampton’s 100 -mile raid behind Union lines included 3\,000 Confederate cavalrymen whose goal was to capture Union cattle to feed Confederate soldiers. When U.S. President Abraham Lincoln heard of the raid capturing more than 2\,000 cattle\, he said that it was “the slickest piece of cattle-stealing” he ever heard of. \nJ. Michael Moore is employed by the City of Newport News and serves as their Historic Services Museum Curator. Moore received a bachelor of arts in history from Christopher Newport University and a master of arts in history from Old Dominion University. During his tenure with the City\, he has curated exhibits at several local historic sites\, developed historic signage\, and led battlefield tours in Maryland\, North Carolina\, Virginia\, and West Virginia. Working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources\, he has placed Causey’s Mill\, Historic Endview\, Lee’s Mill\, and Whitaker’s Mill on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition\, Michael is a popular lecturer for CNU’s LifeLong Learning Society. Moore has co-authored two books – The Peninsula Campaign of 1862: A Military Analysis in 2005 and Yorktown’s Civil War Siege: Drums Along the Warwick in 2012. In addition\, he has served as the editor and photographic editor for twelve books and written articles for Virginia Cavalcade\, North & South\, Military Collector & Historian\, and Mulberry Island Notes. In recognition of his work in public history\, the Governor of Kentucky commissioned Moore a Kentucky Colonel in 2014. DESCRIPTION:Join Mr. Patrick Schroeder who will present on April 3\, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. to the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. Mr. Schroeder will share the “”The Battles of Appomattox:  The Final Fury and the Last to Die.” \nCivil War author and historian Patrick A. Schroeder was born in 1968\, at Fort Belvoir\, VA. Patrick attended Stuarts Draft High School in Augusta County\, VA. In the spring of 1990\, he graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Historical Park Administration from Shepherd College\, Shepherdstown\, WV. He has an M.A. in Civil War History from Virginia Tech. From the summer of 1986-1993\, Patrick worked as a seasonal living history interpreter at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. In 1993\, he wrote Thirty Myths About Lee’s Surrender\, which is currently in its twelfth printing. From 1994 – 1999\, the author worked at Red Hill\, the Patrick Henry National Memorial. From 1999 – 2002\, Patrick was an independent researcher. DESCRIPTION:This will be a caravan driving tour to include stops and guides leading the tour to commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle. The tour will begin promptly at 9:00 am and depart from the Park’s Education Center located at 6523 Duncan Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. Attendees will visit Pamplin Historical Park’s Breakthrough Battlefield and sites immediately following the Breakthrough. Guides will share the historical events\, which unfolded at each site and ultimately culminated in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond\, VA. The tour will end at approximately 1:00 pm. Attendees will arrive and depart from the Park’s Education Center located at 6523 Duncan Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803 and carpools are highly encouraged. \nGuests are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes as there will be a series of walks in-between driving to the sites. Guests are also encouraged to pack a bottle of water and a snack while traveling through Dinwiddie County. Rutan II who will present “High-Bounty Men in the Army of the Potomac.” Rutan will discuss these often disparaged and misunderstood soldiers who joined the Union Army in the later days of the Civil War. Edwin P. Rutan II is a retired attorney with a lifelong passion for American history. After a legal career\, Ed transitioned into historical writing\, focusing on the Civil War. His work combines rigorous scholarship with a storyteller’s flair\, engaging readers with compelling narratives and fresh perspectives on America’s past. His latest book\, “High-Bounty Men in the Army of the Potomac: Reclaiming Their Honor”\, showcases his meticulous research and deep understanding of military history. \nVisitors will also have the opportunity to join a guided tour of the Breakthrough Battlefield\, where attendees can walk in the footsteps of soldiers from the April 2\, 1865 battle. SUMMARY:Medal of Honor Day Observance
DESCRIPTION:The celebration will include a documentary film\, which will explain the origins of the Medal of Honor\, and it’s inception during the American Civil War. A special display on the Medal of Honor will illustrate the evolution of this medal and the changes in it’s requirements over time. \nA special display of multiple Medals of Honor will show the changes in designs and the medals for each branch of service being the: U.S. Air Force\, U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy throughout the day. One of the medals displayed was awarded to U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Louis Cukela. Cukela is one of only 19 two-time Medal of Honor recipients who received both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy Medal of Honor for his actions in World War I during the Battle of Belleau Woods in France. \nAdditionally\, a special Breakthrough Battlefield tour will be held at the Park’s Battlefield Center. There\, visitors will begin the tour by seeing artifacts from two Medal of Honor recipients\, Captain Charles Gould of the 5th Vermont Infantry and Sergeant John Ezra Buffington\, 6th Maryland Infantry. Buffington’s own Medal of Honor is among the artifacts to be viewed. Tour attendees will then tour the Breakthrough Battlefield with the Park’s Senior Interpretive Ranger\, Jim Partain who will share the stories of both men at the actual citation locations along with other Petersburg Campaign Medal of Honor recipients. \nThe Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest award for military valor in action. In over 150 years since it’s inception\, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to just 3\,535 and only 65 are living recipients today. The standards to award the Medal itself have changed since the Civil War and\, over time the design has also changed several times. Although some changes have taken place over the years\, the Medal has always embraced the values of bravery\, courage\, sacrifice and integrity.

DESCRIPTION:Join Mr. Ryan Quint who will present on December 5\, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. to the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. Mr. Quint will share the “The Battle of Dranesville.” \nAfter the guns of Manassas fell silent\, the opposing Civil War armies grappled for position wondering what would come next. Popular history has us believe that daily briefings reported something along the lines of “All quiet along the Potomac.” Reality was altogether different. In fact\, the fall and early winter of 1861 was a hotbed of activity that culminated in the December combat at Dranesville. A Union victory was sorely needed after the string of defeats at Bull Run\, Wilson’s Creek\, and Ball’s Bluff. This battle was small when measured against what was to come; it also helped shape the bloody years to follow. \n\nRyan Quint\, a native of Maine\, earned his degree in history from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg\, VA. He has worked in the field of public history\, including at the George Washington Foundation\, Colonial Williamsburg\, and the National Park Service. DESCRIPTION:Join Pamplin Historical Park as we offer multiple programs throughout the weekend\, to include a Lunch and Learn on Friday\, World War I living-history\, demonstrations\, displays\, presentations\, wargames and Pamplin Historical Park is offering free admission during Veterans Day weekend\, Friday through Monday\, November 8-11\, to all active duty Military\, Reservists\, Retirees\, Veterans\, National Guardsmen. \nA Lunch and Learn will be held on Friday\, November 8 at noon titled “Researching and Designing a Historical Miniature” presentation with Ken Osen\, Master Sculptor and Creative Director of the W. Britain Company. Attendees are invited to bring their own lunch\, and at 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. a wide selection of W. Britain Company merchandise will be displayed and for sale featuring miniatures of America’s fighting men\, women and vehicles from the American Revolution through the Korean War. W. Britain is the oldest maker of model figures and toy soldiers in the world\, being founded in 1893. Originally made as glossy toys for children\, they now also portray highly realistic adult collectables ranging from the times of Saxons and Normans up through World War II. \nOn Saturday\, November 9\, Mr. Osen will present “Reconstructing the Early American Army in Miniature” at 11:00 a.m. and the W. Britain display and sales will continue throughout the day. World War I living-historians will additionally be encamped at the park all day and at noon\, Gunnery Sergeant Peter Keen\, U.S.M.C. will present “Devil Dogs: The U.S. Marine in World War One.” Ken will explore the evolution of the of U.S. Marine Corps who experienced a new kind of fighting in France with modern weaponry\, aircraft\, and the horrors of gas and trench warfare. Out of approximately 4.7 million Americans who served in World War I\, only about 70\,000 were U.S. Marines who earned the nickname “Devil Dogs” from their German adversaries for their ferocity in battle. \nThe Chesapeake Military Society will host wargames starting at 1:00 p.m. where park visitors are invited to join in miniature historical battles to learn about the fighting techniques of the time portrayed. Modern wargaming can be traced back to Prussia in the early 19th-century\, where the professional Prussian military adopted wargaming as a training exercise for their staff officers to develop doctrine\, while applying strategy and tactics. After Prussia defeated France in the Franco-Prussian War\, wargaming was seen as a successful training tool and widely adopted by professional military general staffs around the world. Civilian enthusiasts of all ages now play wargames to recreate historical battles\, pursuing different outcomes or for recreation. \nAll visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 424-acre park to include the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A Civil War “Load in Nine Times ” rifle demonstration will take place at 10:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. \nThe free park admission during the Veterans Day weekend activities\, Friday through Monday\, November 8-11\, includes all active duty Military\, Reservists\, Retirees\, Veterans\, National Guardsmen. Wilson and August Kautz\, whose objective was to cut railroads between Lynchburg\, Virginia\, and the essential Confederate rail supply center at Petersburg\, Virginia. While the raid disrupted Confederate rail communications temporarily\, the raiding force suffered high casualties and loss of artillery\, their supply train and many raiders were captured\, making this a partial Union failure. \nThe tour will leave from the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Historical Park promptly at 8:00 a.m. and return by 5:00 p.m. Stops will include the Schwartz Tavern\, GroveBattlefield\, Staunton River Bridge\, Sappony Church\, Reams Station and others along the way. SUMMARY:World War II in the Pacific Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting in the Pacific Theater and the home front during World War II. Guests will have the chance to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater and about different aspects of a soldier’s life including weapons\, signals and communications\, and tactical demonstrations. Impressions will range from U.S. Army and Marines to those of British and Russian allies. Civilian living historians will portray goings on at the home front and USO activities stateside. Demonstrations will include medical\, cooking\, weapons and a military uniform and civilian fashion show. A special tactical demonstration will be performed on Saturday afternoon to illustrate the art of fire and maneuver. All event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.  \nPartner museums to include; the Hampton Roads Naval Museum\, MacArthur Memorial\, U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum\, U.S. Army Ordnance TSF\, U.S. Army Women’s Museum and the Virginia War Memorial will have displays and more for visitors to see and experience. Presentations by authors and historians will be throughout the weekend. Col. Richard D. Camp U.S.M.C. Ret. will present “Lieutenant General Edward A. Craig: Warrior Six: Combat Leader in World War II and Korea\,” Dr. Timothy Orr will present “No Routine Flights: The Life of Dive Bomber Pilot Donald Kirkpatrick\, Jr.\,” Mr. Carter Bertone will present “The Battle of Wake Island\,” and Mr. Jim Triesler will present “The Coming of War in the Pacific: 1931-1941.” Artist Henry Kidd will additionally speak on his military art and share his collection of Hollywood movie props from The Pacific series\, Saving Private Ryan and Sands of Iwo Jima to name a few. \nColonel Richard D. Camp\, U.S.M.C. Ret. will speak on his new book titled: Lieutenant General Edward A. Craig: Warrior Six: Combat Leader in World War II and Korea (2023). Colonel Richard D. Camp\, a Purple Heart recipient\, served 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring in 1988. Upon retirement he served as the Deputy Director\, U.S. Marine Corps History Division and as the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation\, Vice President for Museum Operations at the National Museum of the Marine Corps\, Quantico\, Virginia. Currently residing in Fredericksburg\, Virginia\, he is the author of ten books and over 100 magazine articles on various military related subjects. Copies of his books will be available for purchase and signing. \nDr. Timothy Orr is associate professor of military history at Old Dominion University. He earned his PhD at the Richards Civil War Era Center at Pennsylvania State University. He is author and editor of Last to Leave the Field (2011) and co-author of Never Call Me a Hero (2017)\, as well as several essays about the Army of the Potomac. He is the book review editor for the Gettysburg Magazine and author of the blog Tales From the Army of the Potomac. For eight years\, he worked as a seasonal ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park. Dr. Orr co-authored Never Call Me a Hero: A Legendary American Dive-Bomber Pilot Remembers of the Battle of Midway (2017) with his wife Laura which chronicles American dive-bomber pilot Jack “Dusty” Kleiss. \nJames Triesler is the Director of Education for the Virginia War Memorial located in Richmond\, Virginia. Triesler became a history teacher in 1992\, and has a passion for WWII. He and his students have won numerous awards for their work\, including a Save Our History Award from the History Channel for creating the website ittookawar.com\, a collection of letters and personal accounts from the Second World War. While in the classroom\, Triesler accumulated nearly 8\,000 original WWII letters for his students to learn from and transcribe. He was named the Virginia Battle of the Bulge person of the year in 2012\, and is a former Virginia Region 1 Teacher of the Year. He has presented at several VBOB and BOBA events and loves displaying artifacts for people to enjoy and learn about WWII. Since 2015\, Triesler has been the Director of Education at the Virginia War Memorial\, where he has continued to honor veterans and educate students of all ages. \nMr. Carter Bertone\, a retired US Army Special Forces and current DoD Civilian will give a presentation on the Battle of Wake Island (Dec 41) in which the heroic actions of a USMC Defense Battalion\, a squadron of USMC fighter planes\, a USN administrative unit US Army signalmen  and a civilian contractor company slowed the advance of Japanese forces across the Pacific during the darkest days of WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor. \nChildren will enjoy craft activities to include World War II coloring books and making a take home    project of the Roosevelt’s Scottie Dog “Fala.” \nWorld War II\, which was fought between 1939 and 1945\, cost an estimated 85 million casualties both military and civilian worldwide. The United States military casualties amounted to 416\,800. While many were thankful for the surrender in Europe on May 8\, 1945 the war in the Pacific raged on and was far from over. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the first half of the year gave a glimpse of the carnage awaiting invasion forces set to strike the Japanese home islands. A planned Allied invasion on the island of Kyushu was set for November 1st. There 500\,000 Japanese troops were in position and another 6 million were under arms or able to be called into service. This invasion did not come to pass. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Imperial Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The terms were accepted on August 14\, 1945 and a formal document signing ceremony took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2nd. \nThis event is held in partnership with Bank of Southside Virginia.

DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Dr. Timothy Orr as he shares the story of “The Forgotten Battle of Wapping Heights.”  \nThe three-day Battle of Gettysburg resulted in over 50\,000 casualties and ultimately forced the retreat of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia led by General Robert E. Lee from Pennsylvania into Virginia. Union Major General George G. Meade initially failed to pursue his retreating foe\, which caused President Abraham Lincoln to remark “We had only to stretch forth our hands & they were ours.” Meade then decided to try and flank the retreating Confederates and cut them off at Manassas Gap in the Shenandoah Valley. The little-known resulting Battle of Wapping Heights took place in the final days of the Gettysburg Campaign. It’s inconclusive outcome led to two more years of bloody Civil War and was a missed opportunity to bring the war to an early end. \nTimothy Orr is associate professor of military history at Old Dominion University. He earned his PhD at the Richards Civil War Era Center at Pennsylvania State University. He is author and editor of Last to Leave the Field (2011) and co-author of Never Call Me a Hero (2017)\, as well as several essays about the Army of the Potomac. He is the book review editor for the Gettysburg Magazine and author of the blog Tales From the Army of the Potomac. SUMMARY:159th Breakthrough Battle Anniversary Driving Tour
DESCRIPTION:This will be a caravan driving tour to include five stops and two guides leading the tour to commemorate the 159th Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle. The tour will begin promptly at 9:00 am and depart from the Park’s Education Center located at 6523 Duncan Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803. Attendees will visit the Jones Farm\, Fort Fisher\, White Oak Road\, Five Forks and Pamplin Historical Park’s Breakthrough Battlefield. Guides will share the historical events\, which unfolded at each site and ultimately culminated in the Breakthrough Battle of April 2\, 1865. The tour will end at approximately 1:00 pm. Attendees will arrive and depart from the Park’s Education Center located at 6523 Duncan Road\, Petersburg\, VA 23803 and carpools are highly encouraged. \nGuests are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes as there will be a series of walks in-between driving to the sites. Guests are also encouraged to pack a bottle of water and a snack while traveling through Dinwiddie County. This event will be rain or shine\, and guests are encouraged to dress accordingly. \nSpace is limited and pre-registration is required. Pricing is $25 per person. Less than an hour later\, the American flag flew over the Confederate line following one of the most important battles of the entire Civil War. This engagement led directly to the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. One week later\, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. \n

Dr. Mackowski will share “Moments of Contingency in the Rise of Grant.” \nUlysses S. Grant is a central figure from the American Civil War. A native of Ohio\, Grant answered the call to serve and finished the war as a lieutenant general in command of the U.S. Army. A mere four years later he would be elected to the presidency of the United States. In both his military and political career\, Grant was battered by enemies and his reputation suffered. One of his crowning achievements was his personal memoirs. It’s still in print today and has been studied by scholars and continues to shape his legacy. Mackowski will discuss this complex figure in both public and personal life\, offering fresh perspectives on his military career and presidency along with exploring personal topics as well. \nChris Mackowski\, Ph.D.\, is the editor-in-chief and co-founder of Emerging Civil War and the series editor of the award-winning Emerging Civil War Series\, published by Savas Beatie. Chris is a writing professor in the Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany\, NY\, where he also serves as associate dean for undergraduate programs. He has worked as a historian for the National Park Service at Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park\, where he gives tours at four major Civil War battlefields. \nMackowski has authored or co-authored nearly two dozen books and edited a half-dozen essay collections on the Civil War\, and his articles have appeared in all the major Civil War magazines. Mackowski serves as vice president on the board of directors for the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust\, he serves on the advisory board of the Civil War Roundtable Congress and the Brunswick (NC) Civil War Roundtable—the largest in the country. He is also a member of the Antietam Institute and the U. S. Grant Homestead Association. SUMMARY:Veterans Day Observance
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we honor America’s veterans this Veterans Day on November 11\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with activities and programs throughout the day. Visitors can learn about the advancements in weaponry between the Civil War and World War I at a special weapons demonstration at 11:00 a\,m.\n\nA Veterans Day ceremony will start at noon to include a presentation of colors\, cannon fire salute and speech. Families are then invited to join educator and musical soloist Deborah Soderholm. She has combined her two passions of singing and history to bring the music of the past alive. A history teacher and museum educator\, she has also performed on various stages throughout the region doing everything from musical theater and cabarets to opera. She has performed with PCC’s Gilbert and Sullivan operettas\, Opera in Williamsburg\, Williamsburg Players\, Peninsula Community Theater\, Fort Lee Theater Company\, Henricus Historical Park\, and the American Youth Ballet. Deborah has also been heard as a church soloist\, professional Christmas caroler for Merchant’s Square\, acting and singing in programs for Colonial Williamsburg Art Museums and doing the national anthem for sporting events and special ceremonies.   Everyone will enjoy songs of American patriotism and and those from World War I beginning at 1:30 p.m.\n\nAfterwards\, Civil War programming will be joined by a U.S. Army Depot Brigades in World War I lecture by author and historian Alexander Barnes at 2:45 p.m. Alexander F. Barnes served in the United States Marine Corps and Army National Guard\, retiring as a warrant officer. He is currently the Virginia National Guard Command historian and author of seven books to include the title\, United States Army Depot Brigades in World War I.\n\nPamplin Historical Park Executive Director\, Jerry Desmond will conduct a guided walking tour at 3:30 p.m. of the Breakthrough Battlefield\, which occurred on April 2\, 1865. The tour will offer attendees a chance to hear about the events which unfolded on that fateful morning while viewing some of the most well-preserved earthworks in the country. A notable story to be shared is that of Captain Charles Gould of the U.S. 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment who is credited as being the first man to enter the Confederate held earthworks. Gould would later receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle.\n\nAll visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 424-acre park to include the Breakthrough Battlefield which on April 2\, 1865\, resulted in the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. A temporary exhibit titled “292 Days\, A City at War” can be toured and is open through December 17\, 2022. It presents the civilian side of the war as the City of Petersburg laid under siege for 292 days from June of 1864 to April of 1865. The exhibit is divided into two parts. The first part examines the history of Petersburg and its impressive growth from its founding around 1675 as a trading post known as Peter’s Point to the secession of Virginia from the United States in 1861. Then the war came\, the second part of the exhibit covers the war years from the secession vote to the end of the siege.\n\nAll event activities and programs are included with regular daily paid admission.

DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Brian Matthew Jordan as he shares stories from his book in a presentation titled\, “A Thousand May Fall: Life\, Death\, and Survival in the Union Army.” \nJordan’s presentation centers around the 107th Ohio Volunteer Infantry\, whose men fought in two defining Civil War battles being Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Most in the regiment were ethnic Germans as were nearly 200\,000 of the immigrants who fought for the Union. They fought the enemy on the battlefield and those at their adopted homeland who questioned their loyalty and patriotism. \nJordan’s book A Thousand May Fall\, includes new research based on diaries\, letters and unpublished memoirs. It reveals the history of the common Civil War soldier and the immigrant story to assimilate into their new home. \nBrian Matthew Jordan is an associate professor of history at Sam Houston State University. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Voices from the Attic
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Carleton Young as he shares the story of “Voices from the Attic: The Williamstown Boys in the Civil War.” \nYoung discovered a large collection of letters from two Civil War soldiers while cleaning out a relatives attic. This propelled Carleton Young on a more than decade long journey to research the two soldiers and explore the battlefields where the two Vermont soldiers fought. His book Voices From the Attic: The Williamstown Boys in the Civil War\, tells the story of the two brothers and their journey in the Peninsula Campaign\, then at South Mountain\, Antietam\, Fredericksburg\, Chancellorsville\, Gettysburg\, the Wilderness\, and Cedar Creek. Their history was preserved through their surprisingly detailed and insightful letters. Young will share their journey and his own at this special evening event. \nCarleton Young earned his MA in history from Ohio University and completed his PhD in the history of education from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a teacher of AP American history at Thomas Jefferson High School in Pittsburgh for 37 years. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Washington D.C. Defenses
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Steven Phan as he shares the story of “The Washington D.C. Defenses during the Civil War.” \nIn the wake of the Union defeat at First Manassas\, federal engineers set to work constructing a ring of defenses around the capital. At wars’ end in 1865\, around 68 major forts surrounded Washington D.C. which included 93 batteries consisting of over 900 cannons. This network of forts was connected by 30 miles of roads to supply and allow for the transferring of troops between forts. \nThis formidable ring of capital defenses were manned initially by volunteer regiments who mustered into service in 1861. They would become know as the “Heavy” regiments as their assignments included drill and training on the massive siege guns during their garrison duty. After a relatively cushy duty outside of the capital\, the Heavies would be sent to the front lines in the spring of 1864. They would suffer some of the highest casualty rates while trying to prove themselves to the more veteran regiments. \nSteven T. Phan is a Park Ranger and historian at the Civil War Defenses of Washington. Phan has also worked as an intern and park guide at Richmond National Battlefield Park\, Hopewell Culture National park and Rock Creek Park. He is the author of several articles about Asians and Pacific Islanders in the Civil War and is currently writing a book on the Civil War Defenses of Washington. A military scholar of the Civil War era\, Phan’s research mainly focuses on fortifications\, military occupation\, operational command and the Western Theater during the Civil War. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Stephen A. Swails: Black Freedom Fighter
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Gordon Rhea as he shares the story of “Stephen A. Swails: Black Freedom Fighter in the Civil War and Reconstruction.” \nStephen Atkins Swails was a free Black in the North prior to the American Civil War. Swails would join the war effort and become the first African American combat officer in the United States military. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry that was the main unit featured in the 1989 film Glory. Swails finished his war service and settled in South Carolina where he held important positions in the Freedmen’s Bureau. While there\, Swails helped to draft the state constitution\, served in the state senate and secured legislation to assist liberated Black citizens. \nGordon C. Rhea is the author of seven award-winning books about the American Civil War and most famously for his series on the Overland Campaign. His works include; The Battle of the Wilderness\, The Battles at Spotsylvania Court House and the Road to Yellow Tavern\, To the North Anna River\, Cold Harbor\, On To Petersburg\, Carrying the Flag\, and In the Footsteps of Grant and Lee. Mr. Rhea is a national lecturer at numerous historical societies\, universities\, and historic preservation organizations on military history subjects and the Civil War era. He has served on several boards associated with historical and preservation organizations. Mr. Rhea has also appeared numerous times as a historian and presenter on national television channels\, including productions by The History Channel\, A&E Channel\, Discovery Channel\, and C-Span. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. Annual membership is $40.00. Individuals who are already members of Pamplin Historical Park can become members of PCWRT for $20.00. Non-members can attend for $5.00 each meeting.
