SUMMARY:Educate for the Future on #GIVINGTUESDAY
DESCRIPTION:Join Pamplin Historical Park this December 3\, 2019 for #GivingTuesday as we celebrate by accepting donations to support the A. Wilson Greene Scholarship Fund which provides funding for schools struggling with field trip transportation costs. Help us reach our goal of $10\,000 to help fund the cost of motor coach rentals for under-funded schools. \n#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals\, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday\, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on December 3rd and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back. \nThe A. Wilson Greene Scholarship Fund (AWGSF) is a grant program that assists schools and other tour groups with financial support for transportation costs to attend field trips at Pamplin Historical Park. Pamplin Historical Park is aware that student groups are often prevented from scheduling field trips due to the cost of providing transportation. The AWGSF is designed to help defray the cost of transportation so that more students and other tour groups are able to experience the extraordinary programming offered at Pamplin Historical Park. \nFounded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y – a community and cultural center in New York City − #GivingTuesday inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. SUMMARY:Petersburg Civil War Round Table at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Stephen Davis who currently serves as the Book Review editor  for the Civil War News. His presentation is titled\, “Hood’s Flank Attack at Atlanta\, July 22\, 1864: Why Jackson’s Flank Attack at Chancellorsville Succeeded\, and Hood’s Did Not.” \nSteve has been a Civil War buff since the 4th grade. He attended Emory University\, and studied under the renowned Civil War historian Bell Wiley. After a Master’s degree in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, he taught high school for a few years\, then earned his Ph.D. at Emory\, where he concentrated on the theme of the Civil War in Southern literature. \nHe served as Book Review Editor for Blue & Gray Magazine from 1984 to 2005\, and is the author of more than a hundred articles in such scholarly and popular publications as Civil War Times Illustrated and the Georgia Historical Quarterly. \nSteve is the author of several books on the Atlanta Campaign: Atlanta Will Fall: Sherman\, John Johnston and the Heavy Yankee Battalions\, and What the Yankees Did to Us: Sherman’s Bombardment and Wrecking of Atlanta. In May 2016 Savas Beatie published his paperback\, A Long and Bloody Task: The Atlanta Campaign from Dalton through Kennesaw Mountain to the Chattahoochee\, May 5-July 18\, 1864. His companion volume is being released this spring: All the Fighting They Want: The Atlanta Campaign from Peach Tree Creek to the Surrender of the City\, July 18-September 2\, 1864. \nDr. Davis is also a talking head. In 2015 he served as a speaker and consultant for the television documentary\, “When Georgia Howled: Sherman on the March\,” a joint production of the Atlanta History Center and Georgia Public Broadcasting. \nSteve is also a popular speaker to Civil War Round Tables and historical societies around the country. His favorite event was when he was invited to speak to the annual meeting of the American Civil War Round Table (UK) in London. His talks around the country have sometimes been filmed and broadcast on C-SPAN. \nThe Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) will meet the first Thursday of each month (except June\, July\, and August) at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. Annual membership is $40.00. Individuals who are already members of Pamplin Historical Park can become members of PCWRT for $20.00. Non-members can attend for $5.00 each meeting. SUMMARY:A Christmas Past
DESCRIPTION:Experience the holidays in 19th century style. Families will enjoy the opportunity for children to meet a ‘Thomas Nast’ Santa Claus including photo opportunities and the chance to enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. Thomas Nast is considered to be the “Father of the American Cartoon” and among his most notable works is his creation of the modern version of Santa Claus. \nChildren will have the opportunity to participate in a craft making activity where the finished holiday craft can be taken home or presented as a gift to a friend. Guests are invited to sign a holiday card for mailing to active duty soldiers serving abroad away from home and family for the holidays. \nEveryone can step into the past with holiday trimmings and décor as the historic Tudor Hall is transformed into a mid-1800’s home for the holidays. Costumed interpreters will provide holiday specific programming throughout the day for this full immersion experience. As former U.S. President Calvin Coolidge said\, “Christmas is not a time nor a season\, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill\, to be plenteous in mercy\, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” \nSoldiers throughout time spent some holidays away from friends and family and Civil War soldiers did as well. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how soldiers decorated their quarters for the holidays and celebrated Christmas in the field while on campaign. Costumed interpreters will portray these soldiers and bring this special experience to life. \nAll activities are included with regular park admission and children ages 5 and under receive free admission.
