SUMMARY:Home School Day at Pamplin
DESCRIPTION:Join us a special Home School field trip program for home school families and associations. Home School Tours at Pamplin Historical Park include educational programs that use fun\, participatory learning techniques to teach historical lessons about life in the nineteenth century. \nEach Home School Tour includes a visit to the award-winning exhibit Duty Called Me Here and two hands-on programs\, Plantation Life\, and A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, led by Pamplin Historical Park Educators. These programs are individually designed for children from third to twelfth grade. \nDuty Called Me Here brings visitors face-to-face with the experiences of the nearly three million Americans who became soldiers during the Civil War. Personal audio players enable students to follow the true story of a “soldier comrade.” In Plantation Life\, students study how free and enslaved Virginia families lived 150 years ago and how that lifestyle changed during the Civil War. In A Civil War Soldier’s Life\, students participate in military drills\, observe weapons demonstrations\, and visit the Park’s recreated Military Encampment\, where they experience elements of a soldier’s life. \nTour times are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tours cost $9.50 for children grades K-12 and $11.00 for adults. SUMMARY:Symposium Tour 2018: Hidden Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Join historians for a special tour in conjunction with our 22nd Annual Civil War Symposium on October 19\, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nPamplin Historical Park Executive Director\, Jerry “Dez” Desmond will begin the tour at the Park and then lead tour attendees on an experience as the hidden treasures at Fort Lee are revealed from amazing museums to historic World War I trenches. \nThe tour features two world class museums including the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum and the U.S. Army Women’s Museum. Both museums feature amazing displays and one of a kind artifacts like those belonging to General U. S. Grant and the story of Medal of Honor recipient Dr. Mary Walker and others. \n“Since 1957 the Quartermaster Museum has preserved the history and heritage of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps\, the Army’s oldest logistic branch. For more than two centuries Quartermaster soldiers have fed\, clothed and equipped the United States Army.” – U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum \n“The U.S. Army Women’s Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to Army women. The Museum honors women’s contributions to the Army from the Revolutionary War to the present\, telling their stories with interactive exhibits and videos throughout the gallery\, as well as film presentations in our theater. The museum also has an extensive research and learning center\, and memorial garden.” – U.S. Army Women’s Museum \nTour attendees will enjoy a lunch on this active military base in one of the mess halls alongside active duty soldiers. A U.S. Army historian will also guide attendees through the fort’s training trenches that remain from World War I\, while sharing parallels between the Civil War and the Great War. SUMMARY:In Memory of Self and Comrades: Book Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:Join author Michael K. Shaffer as he discusses his new book In memory of Self and Comrades which is a story about Thomas W. Colley\, 1st Virginia Cavalry. This event is included with regular admission.\n\nThomas W. Colley served in one of the most active and famous units in the Civil War\, the 1st Virginia Cavalry\, which fought in battles in the Eastern Theater\, from First Manassas/Bull Run to the defense of Petersburg. Colley was born November 11\, 1837\, outside Abingdon\, Virginia\, and grew up knowing the daily demands of life on a farm. In May 1861\, along with the other members of the Washington Mounted Rifles\, he left his home in Washington County and reported to camp in Richmond. During the war\, Colley received wounds on three different occasions: first at Waterloo Bridge in 1862\, again at Kelly’s Ford in 1863\, and finally at Haw’s Shop in 1864. The engagement at Haw’s Shop resulted in the amputation of his left foot\, thereby ending his wartime service.\n\n\n\nThe first modern scholarly edition of Colley’s writings\, In Memory of Self and Comrades dramatizes Colley’s fate as a wounded soldier mustered out before the war’s conclusion. Colley’s postwar reflections on the war reveal his struggle to earn a living and maintain his integrity while remaining somewhat unreconciled to his condition. He found much of his solace through writing and sought to advance his education after the war. As one of an estimated 20\,000 soldiers who underwent amputation during the Civil War\, his memoirs reveal the challenges of living with what many might recognize today as post-traumatic stress disorder. Annotations from editor Michael K. Shaffer provide further context to Colley’s colorful and insightful writings on both his own condition and the condition of other veterans also dealing with amputations. \nMichael K. Shaffer is an instructor at Kennesaw State University’s College of Continuing and Professional Education. He is the author of Washington County\, Virginia\, in the Civil War.
