Successfully engaging younger learners in a historical experience is one of our specialties. Our Discovery Program, aimed at children ages 8 through 13, approaches kids on their terms and leads them into fun and interesting activities throughout the Park.

The Discovery Program begins at the museum gallery “Duty Called Me Here,” where youngsters are introduced to Delevan Miller, a 13-year-old drummer boy who served with the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery Regiment. Outfitted with personal MP3 players, children hear Delevan’s actual words as he describes his experiences in the Civil War. They also hear a special gallery narration scripted for kids.

At The Battlefield Center, kids can enter “The Discovery Tent” and sample Civil War uniforms and period clothing that is just their size. They can also try their hand at interactive computer kiosks that feature fun learning games and quizzes based on what they have seen at the Park.

Throughout the Park there are hands-on things to do for the whole family. Our costumed interpreters are skilled at engaging kids in activities that are fun and educational.

The Civil War Store also has a “Discovery Area” that features quality apparel, modern and period games, books, collectibles and souvenirs that are perfect for kids and young adults.


For kids ages 8-11 and 12-13, Pamplin Historical Park hosts its annual History Day Camps. Give your child an unforgettable experience that is enriching, educational and fun!

At the Civil War Adventure Camp, kids 8-years-old and up can experience life as a Civil War Soldier! Participants sleep in re-created soldier huts and barracks, eat a soldier's supper and breakfast, learn drill, tactics, camp skills, and music, and may even fire a reproduction Civil War rifle."

Pamplin Historical Park offers Civil War themed birthday parties for children ages 8-12! These exciting birthday experiences last two hours and include 19th century games and crafts, a rifle demonstration and drill, and celebration time for gifts and treats. Call 804-861-2408 to make a reservation.
